For some reason there seems to be an infatuation with gearheads and wagons. I can't quite explain it, but I'll attempt. It's probably because a wagon has the usability of a sport-utility vehicle but the driving dynamics of a standard sedan — well, not exactly but closer than a jacked up SUV.
This has birthed cars like the BMW M5 estate, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon, Audi RS6 Avant and Cadillac CTS-V Wagon. I could go on but I'll stop.
Though it seems that the hot wagon market has cooled a bit, Volkswagen may be the latest to join the fray. That's because the latest spy shots have captured a Golf R wagon undergoing developmental testing.
This is confusing for a couple of reasons:
1) It could be an another Volkswagen Group (VWAG) chassis under development simply sporting a Golf R shell;
2) It is completely uncovered, which is odd; and,
3) Volkswagen isn't exactly acknowledging it's been given a "green light."
We've seen other companies do this in the past and create a skunkworks project car for fun, but I am thinking this could be the real deal that's going to be making an appearance at an auto show near you soon.
