The talk about BMW bringing along an 8-Series has long been going on. And when I first heard about Project i, you better believe I NEVER thought it would be the driving force to reinstalling the 8-Series in the BMW lineup.

But here we are.

While you may want to argue whether or not it is an 8-Series, all I know is this: it has an 8 in its name. To me, that means it's a successor.

The concept of a hybrid sports car is a pretty difficult one to digest for purists and given the other ride-a-long clips we've seen from EVO Magazine, it will take some getting used to as this BMW sports car can be eerily quiet a good portion of the time. I guess it will just have you yearning to hear the 1.5-liter three-cylinder powerplant kick in because it does sound quite good.

I should know as I just drove the three-cylinder prototype last month.

So, sit back and tack a look at the i8 get a work out on the 'Ring. By the way, is it me or is that Range Rover Sport — could it be the rumored RS (?) — hauling some serious ass?

We have posted countless spy photos and videos of the upcoming BMW i8 hybrid sports car, but we've yet to spy it on an actual track... until now. BMW trotted this i8 mule out to the Nurburgring this week and we managed to capture it on the Nurburgring for the first time.

The i8 is expected to boast 354hp / 500Nm torque, 0-62 mph in approximately 4.6 seconds, top speed of 155mph, 78 MPG (european test cycle), up to 47 MPG average fuel consumption, with just 66kg/km emissions, all from its 1.5L three cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (in rear) with a 128hp electric motor (in front).
