While many folks remember Volkswagen's first sport-utlity vehicle, the Thing, it seems as though the Touareg hasn't done so bad for itself since its launch in 2004. I know because I owned one.

It received many accolades and the first-generation vehicle was a hit in the northeast. BUT nowadays I don't see so much of the second-generation product. And I think I know why.

After driving a second-gen product it just felt so "meh." For those of you not familiar with the term, let me explain.

The first-gen car was produced in the time period where VW had something to prove. It introduced the Phaeton, arguably one of the best luxury sedans people DIDN'T buy, and over engineered the hell out of the Touareg. It was a brilliant on- and off-road machine.

The best way to describe the second-gen vehicle in relation to the first would be like having a cupcake without the icing, the good stuff.

While the first-gen Touareg was built to prove a point, the second-gen vehicle was built to make a buck and it shows.

Now. [/endrant]. Here we're seeing the very first spy shots of the soon-to-be updated flagship SUV from Volkswagen. Though the vehicle is very clearly camouflaged up, it's clear that the changes will not be exceedingly drastic. Expect some minor enhancements to the front facade and ass-end of the Touareg.
