SPY PHOTOS: Can you guess what car this is?
Super Sleuth and Auto Spy hall of famer, Fred Khaz was quick with his trigger finger this week near the South Coast Plaza.

He caught these shots of an unknown future car.

We're curious if anyone knows what it is?

Looks Infiniti-like to us...maybe G37 sedan? Way to go Fred!

Probably the new M.
The back almost looks like a Lexus GS.

Its a Hyundai Genesis. The production version. Grille gives it away big time

Obviously not a BMW grill, but the proportions scream 5-series. I'd say you guys are right that this is a G37.

This my friends is the 2009 Hyundai Genesis. Really sharp looking!!!!Thought for a minute it might be the next generation BMW 7 series, but it's the Hyundai Genesis without a doubt.

For a second I thought it was some sort of BMW until I looked at the exhaust tips...I then knew it had to be either Japanese or Korean.

Just kidding, it's the Hyundai Genesis...a dead ringer to the spy shots of a month ago.

The lines are definitely Nissan-ish but the new Hyundai appears to borrow from Nissan.

The only thing I know for sure is the car from which the pics were taken is a 997. (Side mirror and these feminine hips are dead giveaways.)

Only Hyundai would blatantly copy BMW's 5-series profile to a tee including an identical hoffmiester kink or whatever and roof fin. This is shocking. I thought Hyundai wanted to establish itself as one of the world's top 5 carmakers. This is a definite step backwards.

Pathetic.

At first it could've been an XF, an Infiniti, a BMW or even a mini Lexus, but yes I agree that it's the Genesis.

looks like a redesigned lexus GS to me
look at the rear end pic and compare to GS taillights
also similar treatment in the c pillar to the current GS
Maybe mild facelift for '09?

To All who thought this is a copy, I have a several things to say about this car. I agree, it is not the most orginal design, but it is done in America. Also, the head designer was in charge of designing the new Audi TT.

I agree, the roof line is shared with BMW, but I also know that Infiniti uses the same line in its G sedan. So why are we blaming only Hyundai? Also, I have to say that I would reather have a good looking car rather than haveing an "original" design that is totally unacceptable. (Pontiac Aztech anyone?)
Anyhow, there is one thing that Hyundai did wrong. Why did they choose BMW 5-series to copy? It is simply the ugliest piece of design ever!!

So, let's not blame too much on them.

I think its Lexus. GS facelift probably, the door lines are straight out of L Finesse as are what you can see of the headlights. The only thing that makes me cautious are the wing mirrors, lexus dont make them that small!

Looked like Infiniti G35 from the side shots, but the back lamps, and the front grill suggests to it being the new Hyundai genesis, if you look at some of the spy pics of hyundai genesis in carspyshots.net, then you guys will know that the grill is of the Genesis not an infiniti at all. And also the headlamps are not that of a g35 either.

The first clue would be to determine which manufacture has CA Distributor plates that are 17000...I cannot remember right now if it is Nissan or Hyundia (or maybe somebody else), but since Hyundai's HQ is right up the fwy from South Coast Plaza that is a safe bet, but Kia is located close by too.

I'm sure somebody at Hyundai is smiling if they read the above posts.

First looks noted that the pics were a Nissan, BMW, Infiniti?...Nope, it's a Hyundai Genesis. This vehicle is due to rewrite the US-market perception of this company...in a big way.

the rear and C pillar says Lexus GS350 all day long, someone said maybe it was 09 facelift. This is improbable as the GS underwent a facelift for 08. evrything from the rear and 3/4 view says lexus but the front end is highly anti lexus. i can only agree with everyone who says Hyundai Genesis

I saw that car drive out of the Nissan/ Infinti facility the a week before the LA Auto Show. I live right down the street from there and you see all kinds of test mules running around. BTW, I was at the Shell station on Beach and I saw a Hyundai SUV with body cladding bags all over it. I was pulling in as the guy was getting gas and he had a Hyundai shirt on... To bad I didn't have my camera and my cell phone flash was not powerful enough...

Hmm interesting.. If you look at the side view, you get the thought its an Infinite or a Nissan, you can compare it to the altima or the G35 sedan. But it also resembles the GS. Also, the taillights look close to the ones on the GS.. The headlights on the other hand resemble a Nissan, and the Grill excludes BMW. and then...Wow! its a hyundai!!!!

Seeing that controversy seems to follow my post I am going to stir up the pot, this is the MMC for the Acura RL. Here are my reasons:

Side profile is identical to the Acura TSX, Rear window area is similar to new Accord

Front grill looks alot like the current RL. Bumper is not as pointy as past Acura's but with new predestrian impact laws the shift has been made to rounder fronts, also front profile looks alot like MDX.

Rear slope rear glass is almost identical to recent pictures of expected 2009 A

Like I was saying rear glass is idenitical to expected 09 TL, and oval exhaust tips are exact to current RL.

Where were these photo's taken? The only reason why I would ask is because the plant were the RL is built in Japan is being closed temporarily for upgrades, which would mean a domestic manufacture of the RL at least for the next 2 years. We shall see

Hyundai (correct spelling, oops) is taking a play right out of the Lexus play book; Make a car that closely resembles the competition your aiming for. Pack it full of all the latest technology, gadgets and luxurty. Then sell it for way less than anyone else could even think of selling there's for. Mix in some great service as well (this will be there biggest challenge. The quality, as we all know, is now there) and WALA! instant success and presence in a market you never played in before. It worked like a champ for Lexus? Will it work like as well for Hyundai? HMMMM. Even though Toyota had the reputation at the time they chose to take the risk, they deicid (at least for the US market) to use a completely made up name. Hyundai is doing it under there own name! Gutsy. If it works as they believe it will, they will be the only manufacturer selling here in the US to sell vehicles in ALL classes of automobiles from entry level up to luxury under one banner!!. It will be interesting to how it plays out.
