No one saw Hyundai's Genesis sedan coming and the dominant luxury manufacturer's have paid the price. As seen in the latest JD Power rankings, where the Hyundai Genesis was rated the highest newly-launched vehicle, Hyundai has taken the auto industry by storm. Now, the brand continues to reinvent itself by taking on the large, luxury sedan segment with the Equus. 001 was on the scene this morning and got some shots revealing the INTERIOR of the new, 7-series fighter.Does it have what it takes to fight the big, bad Audi/BMW/Lexus/MB's of the world? The hood ornament has to go.Otherwise, it's good looking, not exciting but it looks luxurious. Remove the hood ornament and chromed wheels and you have a serious DTS/Lucerne Super/LS460 contender.— MSP6 (View Profile)

This car is a heap of crap. 100% DUD. Just like every other Korean vehicle (and the majority of Japanese ones, too). They may drive o.k., they're probably reliable, but there is zero originality or ground-breaking thinking in anything that comes out of Korea. It's all derivative and cheesy. A car for pretenders or people who think they're really moving "up." It's laughable. — 204E60 (View Profile)

Credit must be given where credit is due. The Equus' interior looks the part of a full size luxury sedan. It may not be expensive like my LS or have the flash of my S but my god this will attract many consumers who are watching their expenses. The car has presence from photos. It's chrome bits make it appear more luxurious of course. Based solely on looks it's a winner for Hyundai. A good looking flagship built off the momentum of the Genesis. Hyundai will shock many world tier 2 luxury brands and take some from tier 1 no doubt about it.— Agent63 (View Profile)

Yeah Mitchell's right on this one, as the LS competes in an inferior class The LS is often cross-shopped with cars such as Hyundai Azera, Kia Amanti, Buick Lucerne, and used Buick Roadmasters.— MSP6 (View Profile)

Equus take shame to a whole new level. Where the Genesis atleast had the 'Hyundai' name on the door scuff plate, the Equus doesn't even bother, instead writing 'Equus' instead. So now a dumb person will believe Hyundai, Genesis and Equus are all different car manufacturers, the later 2 being European. I guess that's "mission accomplished".That's a lovely Lexus interior though, Toyota might be impressed.— huu76 (View Profile)

I was just going to say the same thing! How many different logos will Hyundai make? I mean, they could have pulled a Toyota & Lexus thing by having Hyundai dealers and Genesis dealers... then just numerical names for the actual Genesis, the Genesis Coupe and now the Equus, which is also a strange name for a car - from Wikipedia: Equus is a play by Peter Shaffer written in 1973, telling the story of a psychiatrist who attempts to treat a young man who has a pathological religious/sexual fascination with horses.[1]— mac075 (View Profile)

The exterior is a disaster and yet distinctively Korean looking somehow. The interior design is decent but the materials look pretty bland and somewhat cheap. Like the Lexus LS there is little inspiration when it comes to designing attractive interior for the front and rear doors and the wood looks really tacky too.And as a typographer I am really bothered by the terrible font Hyundai used to write the word "Equus". This serif font has something Medieval to it but it just doesn't fit the car's design and I guess "personality" at all. Hell, I think even something as simple and comical as the front "Freestyle script" would have worked better than this horrible typeface font they used.— Willis (View Profile)

Acura/Lexus exterior, Audi wheels, Mercedes interior... overall it is a handsome vehicle, but what would make this a dude is if they brought it to the market for $50,000... I couldn't see spending $60-70,000 when there is so much nicer competition in that price range.— adamsaf723 (View Profile)

Someone needs to contact Hyundai and inform them about how terrible chrome everything looks.Otherwise it looks like it'll be a decent enough car. Like most Hyundai, the value proposition will be high. Good price, reliability, warranty, etc.In this economy, it just might win over some people who don't necessarily need a Lexus or Mercedes badge to show off but want a car they can relax in as a passenger. There aren't too many options with reclining massage rear seats and leg rests. So if the price is right, I see this becoming something of a success.— Epik (View Profile)

I have a decent amount of friends, many of whom drive big luxury sedans. A good mix between german sedans and the LS. I just dont see this working. People keep comparing it to the Lexus, and how "smart" people saw the value in the models. I can see that, but that was built on the 20+ years or quality Toyota products. The past 10 years have been good to Hyundai but not good enough. Past the car itself the infrastructure they have in place will not cut it, both in the sales and service sides. Do you really think a guy who is coming out of a $100,000 bens or 7 series will be impressed, or even excited to go into a Hyndai dealership? It just wont happen... at least not today. Maybe in another 10 years. — Timzilla (View Profile)

Yeah yeah Smokey, I'm sure everyone thinking of a $65,000 car is lining up at Hyundai dealerships as I type this. The Genesis can barely outsell the aging Avalon and thats only because Hyundai is practically giving them away for free or even at a loss. I'd like to see what incentives the Equus already has on it.Hyundai Canada (remember, Canadians still have money) Genesis has 1.9% for 60 months, a gas card, and whatever else the Korean gov't is anteing up with.http://www.hyundaicanada.com/Pages/SpecialOffer/SalesPromotions.aspxToyota Canada only offers 0% for 3yrs on the 2009 Yaris, Tundra, Prius or 2010 Matrix, Corolla. Instead of 0% you can possibly opt for avg $2000 off instead. No more gas card. Note there is not one single incentive on the Avalon, Venza, Sienna, 2010 Prius (most of the 2010 for that matter).http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObjects/WWW.woa/25/wo/Home.Promotions-8gODNxQfhiMbpDMT9zlA3g/0.9?fmg%2fpromo%2fp101000e.htmlI'm starting to understand why Hyundai is so embarassed to put its name on their new cars.Hyundai would do itself a big favour by actually coming out with something unique before it decides to take on the industry leader. You don't go upscale by lowering prices and pouring on incentives immediately. Judging by the Genesis I sat in at the Autoshow, I doubt the Equus' inerior would impress many people.— huu76 (View Profile)

Why is the Equus trunk only partially lined with fabric and the rest in hard looking plastic? The LS uses full fabric. Hell, the storage area of my Jeep is lined with leather because of the rear seats. As for the interior, the Equus can't compete against the GS' and isn't even in the same time zone as the LS. Why did Hyundai go crazy when they perforated the Equus leather? The front seats look like they were trying to save on material. There must not be a long wheel base model since the pictures above show no ottoman/recliner feature.I'm curious to know if the back of the seats and parts of the side doors are leather or plastic, its too difficult to discern this from the above pictures.— huu76 (View Profile)

Lmao Huu, its called utility. Hyundai Owners used to complain about things spilling in the trunks, so they took out a lot of the trunk lining side fabrics. — HyundaiSmoke (View Profile)
