See ya’ later M3 Coupe: Audi RS 5 could get Lambo’s 500hp V10
The Audi S5’s 4.2 liter V8 engine that produces 354 horsepower is more than adequate to lead the coupe segment with BMW’s 335i coupe and Infiniti’s G37 following behind. But what does Audi have planned to rival the new 2008 BMW M3 coupe? Most would jump to the conclusion that the next Audi RS 4 with a rumored 450 horsepower engine would be the perfect competitor.

However, the RS 4 is a sedan and will be a great competitor for the M3 Sedan rather than the M3 Coupe. The answer to the 2008 BMW M3 Coupe will be Audi’s upcoming RS 5, which is expected to...

How much will they price such a car?
I doubt it will be in the 60 to 65,000$.

The prospect for performance is quite amazing though.

I think Lambo's only competition from Audi is the R8, no one is cross shopping RS5's and Gallardos.

LOL, Threepoint is right. Lamborghini has nothing to be scared of... when one wants a Lambo, one buys a Lambo, no questions asked. They're not going to be shopping for Audis or even Ferraris. And even if this is too close to the Gallardo--there are rumors of it getting a power boost, anyway.

Or the detuned version of TTV10 from RS6.

Next time you post an article please be sure to put it against similar cars. The Audi S5 is not a competitor with the M3 in any way. The 6 series BMW is direct competition for this. Therefore you are talking the M6 vs. S5. And guess what, the M6 has a 500hp V10 as well!

So this article is fairly non-informative to me until I see a comparison between the two from MT or C&D. Oh and by the looks of the Audi, I'd rather have an M6.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt the A5 nearly the exact same size as the 3 series coupe and CLK? Why then compare it to the 6 series? It's always been hard to compare the CLK to the 6 for this very same reason. I hardly see a CLK63 as an M6 competitor, likewise I dont see the RS5 as an M6 competitor either.

HwanyHwany - 11/7/2007 5:11:26 PM

Next time before you put a stupid comments like this,
check your facts.

S5 is a 335i competitior and A5 is a direct 328i competitor. Both price wise and performance/size wise.

So the RS5 is a M3 competitior.

S4cabriofoxoneS4cabriofoxone - 11/7/2007 5:56:20 PMView My AgentSpace
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
The S5 is 10 in shorter than the 6 Series coupe and only 2 in longer than the 3 Series coupe, so they are indeed direct competitors (328xi/335xi and A5/S5). The 650i coupe is also about $25K more than the S5... and a fully-loaded S5 is only around $600 more than a fully-loaded 335xi coupe.

Hwany

i agree with you!
A5 vs 328i
S5 vs 335i
RS5 vs M3

What about M3 CSL then?? BMW has already confirmed that they will produce CSL for every M3 model from this generation. so will it be:
RS5 vs M3 + M3 CSL??

i think the RS5 will be a lot faster than the manual M3, pretty much similar to the c 63 AMG, but the SMG M3 will come out early next year, which will push M3 to the AMG level. and plus the CSL version,i think the BMW might dominate the game again.

Big deal, anyone can cramp fat auss engine in a small sedan and make it fast like a rocket. Why use a V8 instead and make the vechicle light.

The BMW M3 only had 414hp, and this rumor Audi RS5 will have V10 with 500hp. So what if it beat the M3, it had almost 100hp more than the M3 coupe.

To be fair, both vechicle has to have almost the same amount of horse power and lb of torque.

What's your point? All luxury brands produce gas-guzzlers. Audi also produces some of the best diesels on Earth--along with BMW, they may revolutionize the US market with luxury diesels.

i appreciate their diesels, but this v10 crap is getting ridiculous. i liked that "gentlemen's agreement" the japanese makers USED to have; something like a cap of 276hp...which was often disregaurded.

it's not very prudent to continue this horsepower pissing contest. it's cool to have sport models, but i think it got out of hand a bit when they stopped tunning 6 cylinders for compacts and ante'd up to v8's.

maybe i'm becoming a grumpy old man. or maybe i just hate to see my first love - cars - be the downfall of mankind.

Exactly, I am so tired of people making threads comparing cars that aren't even in the same segment, just so that they can generate conflict between readers. This is a typical "apples and oranges" comparison. Fact of the matter is that the RS4 starts at about 70K and so the RS5 will probably be closer to the 80K, if not a little more. M3 at 60K+ dollars vs. a RS5 at about 80K dollars- of course your gonna get a bigger and better engine, i mean your paying bigger bucks aren't you?

leelemonleelemon - 11/7/2007 6:48:37 PM
+3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Oops, I forgot one thing. The RS5 matches the hp on an M6 now. If Audi can make it significantly cheaper than the overpriced 100K M6, they will have a sure winner. I'd buy the RS5 over the M6 due to better looks alone.

mini22mini22 - 11/7/2007 6:34:22 PM

First Audi is not cannabolizing Lamborgini. if anything Lambo is cannabolizing Audi. In fact the Gallardo's suspension is being refined from the R8. The low cost Gallardo is using the V8 from the R8. It might be tuned slightly differently and the Lambo is also lighter. Therefore it should be slightly quicker. Also keep in mind that the V10 in the Gallardo is developed from an Audi block originally. The Murcealago has an original Lambo V12. However that is soon to change when it is replaced by a new model.Putting a V10 in the RS5 will certainly push the price well above an M3 I would guess. What does an RS6 cost?

I doubt Audi would throw or could even fit that engine into the RS5, unless it was a heavily detuned version of the Garllado's engine. I thought they already had troubles fitting it to a front engine layout in the S6's egine bay.

Anyhow I don't think this segment calls for or a V-10, I'd be happier to see a 500hp V8 in the RS5 so BMW doesn't screw up the M3 with yet another 2 more cylinders.

Besides it wouldn't be smart for Audi to do so, what they'd gain in straight away speed they'd loose in corners.

The RS5 I heard will come with 485 horsepowr and 480 lb/ft. of torque. If that torque prediction is indeed true, the BMW M3 will never win the straight-line test between these two.

Considering the A5 is a better handler than the current A4 which is the basis for the B7 RS4, the RS5, if the predicted numbers are correct, combined with the improved handling would make for easily the best performance coupe on the market for under $100K.

I'm sick of this. Let me put it simply: Audi's engine positioning strategy does NOT directly compete with BMW's. They are in-between BMW's entire lineup. In the case of the A6, for example, it goes:

528xi > A6 3.2 quattro > 535xi > A6 4.2 > 550i > S6 > M5 (this one could be swapped with S6, since many reviews place it higher than the M) > RS6

It seems as if BMW has rediscovered turbocharging. Of course, Audi had a bi-turbo V6 seven years ago. They also had a bi-turbo V8 four years ago. But they're past that now. I think BMW should be, too.

If Audi does a turbocharged V6 B8 S4 and a turbocharged V8 RS5, BMW will obviously have to turbo its M3 to stay competitive.

Man, looks like BMW is tracking Audi's every move.

First the spyshots of a rumored twin-turbo M5 after the RS6 debut, and now BMW will surely respond to Audi's decision to turbocharge the S4 and RS5.

What are you talking about? The 2.7T A6 and S4 were around seven years ago. Audi is simply following tradition--the B6/B7 S4 was a break, and it wasn't as nimble as the one before it, I'd be the first to admit that. My brother has a Stage III chip on his S4 2.7T and it's a monster.

The 335i is beautiful, yes. The S5 is moreso.

I can't wait to see Audi drop a turbo V6 into the B8 S4 and also turbo the RS5.

BMW won't have any option but to turbo their M3 and try to keep pace with Audi's horsepower figures

Look at the BMW M5, it magically got a revised bumper for enhanced cooling and was tested with a twin-turbo engine right after Audi released their own twin- turbo, 580 horsepower, V10 RS6

What are you back from the future "Nut?" Since when did Audi release the RS6 & BMW a revised M5? Assuming you meant there were spy-photos released recently of an M5 with larger intakes being tested, my guess would be it's the next-gen model.

BTW nut what do you expect BMW to do, not pay attention to what Audi, Mercedes, Lexus or even Jag are up too these days? Of course they're keeping close watch, there's a reason as to why BMW’s #1, they keep stepping it up as others fall behind.

Obviously MunichRob, BMW has not released a twin-turbo M5 yet.

I was stating that a twin-turbo version of the M5 with a supposed 600 horsepower has been seen testing right after Audi released their twin-turbo V10, 580 horsepower, RS6.

I expect people to realize that BMW considers Audi a competitor.

It is so blatantly obvious that BMW is watching Audi's every move.

Consider BMW's horsepower output and even cylinder counts for the M3 are the exact same as the Audi RS4 and pretty soon the M5, which already has the same number of cylinders as the Audi RS6, will have twin turbos also and likely the same horsepower rating
