Nissan Motor Co. Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn was awarded a knighthood by Britain for improving Anglo-Japanese relations.

"The queen acknowledges Ghosn's efforts in improving the relationship between Japan and the U.K.," Graham Fry, Britain's ambassador to Japan, said in a ceremony in Tokyo Monday.

Nissan has invested about 2.3 billion pounds ($4.5 billion) since 1984 to build Britain's biggest car factory in Sunderland, northeast England. The unit, Nissan Motor Manufacturing, builds 60% of Nissan vehicles sold in Europe and accounts for 20% of total British car production.
