Consider me the only source you need. Go put a bigger exhaust can on your torque-less Honda.

RICEMASTER - this is already over with. The 3 is benchmark, end of story. Nothing looks, performs or handles like it. The GTI competes on performance but loses on reliability.
zairnaim - you also need to get you facts straight. Ford owns 33% stake in Mazda. Do you know what that means? Probably not.

The Rabbit not the GTI(the GTI is way beyond a POS Mazda 3). With more power(170HP), better ride quality and top notch interior the Rabbit is by far the best in this segment. The prove is that Europeans choose the Rabbit over anything else in this segment while the brainwashed readers of Consumer Reports in America buy their c**p Corollas and Civics. I agree that the Mazda 3 tops the segment if we count only the Japanese cars but if we put in the Rabbit, Mazda looses any chance against the fabulous German engineering.

I love the Rabbit GTI, which IMO is the same thing. My friend's 2000 GTI VR6 is called Rabbit on the title. I'd prefer to drive a GTI over the Mazda 3, but would buy the Mazda 3, not the GTI.

Star if you think the 3 is a POS you are an ignorant biased douche like the rest of the fanboys on this site.

So you would not drive the better car(Rabbit) because Consumer Reports told you not too. It is unbelievable how somebody in the 21th century can still believe that unreliable car brands actually exist. Is absolutely childish to buy a lesser car because you are concerned about the reliability of the better car.
Also to clarify :GTI is the sport version of a Rabbit just like Mazdaspeed 3 is the sport version of a regular Mazda 3. The Rabbit is the one competing with the regular Mazda 3 while the GTI competes with the Mazdaspeed 3. They share the same body(with some modifications)but obviously they are not the SAME car. It is Rabbit against Mazda3 OR GTI against Mazdaspeed3.

M35MT I think Mazda 3 is the best Japanese compact car on the market but I also believe that it doesn't come even close to the quality of a VW Rabbit. I admit that calling the Mazda 3 a POS was too much...the 3 is certainly not a bad car.

very biased indeed of course. you probably never driven it. the rabbit/golf/wh/tf you wanna call it has a good drive. however, the mazda 3 has a more fun drive, especially the base engine. their engines have more power than what the rabbit has, not to mention, its the cheapest car to go 155mph. I don't see what your trying to say.

Star-
Facts:
My choice to drive the speed3 has nothing to do with consumer reports. It has to do with VW reputation, high price, and the fact that it has less power and torque than the 3.
Subjective opinion:
I think the speed3 is better looking, I think the interior looks better (although you will find a higher grade of materials in the VW).
The new GTI brings the car back to it's roots, 20 years ago. My issue is, the previous gen looked better, while the current gen is a much better performer. I'm not saying the GTI will break the second you drive it off the lot. But I drove a plain jane Mazda3 for 50,000 miles before trading it for the speed3, and didnt have a single issue, whereas the actual VW owners on VWVortex.com, have several threads detailing the problems that plague VW's.

M35MT is absolutely right! Mazda currently having the best compact sedan and it is the 3. It may not have the sales of the Corolla thats because ppl with a small budget think *TOYOTA* is actually the best in reliability when its abt the same with all the manufactures.

To increase drivability and minimize torque steer and wheel spin in what is a very powerful front-wheel drive car, a sophisticated torque-management system combines with equal-length hardened driveshafts and a cone-type Super LSD limited slip differential.

This car is not the all new Mazda 3...if it is, it's nothing new....it looks just like the current car.
