Spies Get New BMW X6 Details First

BMW has once again introduced a ground-breaking idea to the world and the creation of a new segment with the debut of its all-new X6 Sports Activity Coupe.  This all-new addition to BMW’s very successful SAV line redefines the very notion of a coupe—with five doors and four sculpted seats, a higher ride and loads of cargo space.  It defies coupe conventions in one jaw-dropping look, combining coupe agility and SAV versatility, taking the coupe to a higher level.

As the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW X6 will be available in two engine variants: the xDrive50i (4.4 V8 engine, 400 hp, 450lb.-ft torque) and the xDrive35i (3.0 inline six-cylinder engine, 300 hp, 300 lb.-ft torque), both with Twin Turbo and direct injection.  The BMW X6 offers unique features and performance ability in a combination unmatched by any other vehicle. The new BMW X6’s design combines the sporting elegance of a large BMW Coupe with the powerful presence of a BMW X model.

The BMW X6 employs BMW’s proven intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with electronic control to vary the distribution of drive power between the front and rear axles, instantaneously adjusting to driving conditions.  However, the X6 takes xDrive a step further with the introduction of Dynamic Performance Control.

Featured for the first time on the BMW X6, Dynamic Performance Control ensures variable distribution of drive forces between the two rear wheels. Dynamic Performance Control incorporates an advanced computer control and an innovative rear differential incorporating two planetary gearsets and two clutch packs that enable the system to multiply torque on an individual rear wheel. The result is that Dynamic Performance Control can help steer the vehicle by directing torque to either of the rear wheels. Unique the world over, this cutting-edge technology is effective whether the driver is accelerating or decelerating and significantly enhances steering precision and, as a result, the agility of the vehicle at any speed. In fast corners with abrupt steering maneuvers or with the driver suddenly releasing the gas pedal, Dynamic Performance Control serves to improve the stability of the entire vehicle, thus allowing the driver to safely enjoy new dimensions of driving dynamics. Finally, on slippery or uneven surfaces, Dynamic Performance Control provides the further advantage of even safer and more stable traction.

The new V8 engine with Twin Turbo technology and high presision direct injection, is likewise making its world debut in the BMW X6. Displacing 4.4 liters, this eight-cylinder with maximum engine output of 400 hp and peak torque of 450 lb-ft available over an unusually large range of engine speed from 1,750–4,500 rpm, is the most powerful engine ever seen in a BMW X model.

The new eight-cylinder is indeed truly impressive not only through its outstanding thrust and pulling force, but also through its compact dimensions. For this is the first eight-cylinder gasoline engine in the world to feature its turbocharger in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders.

Hence, the BMW Sports Activity Coupe is an absolutely exceptional vehicle beyond the direct range of BMW X model competitors, ensuring unparalleled performance in all situations, regardless of road and surface conditions.

Unique design: dynamic line, powerful presence.

In its design, the BMW X6 definitely offers all the DNA of a genuine BMW X model, interpreted however, in a brand-new, extremely sporting style. Indeed, the design language of this new model is the authentic visualization of the outstanding driving characteristics offered by the BMW X6, mainly through intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive technology and Dynamic Performance Control.

Various design features typical of BMW also stand out in the vehicle’s details, ranging from the BMW kidney grille to the dual round headlights optically “cut off” at the top and the powerful contour line along the side, all the way to the horizontal lines at the rear emphasizing the sheer width of the vehicle.

AMC ripped off the idea from BMW.

They went back in time to avoid spy shots of the X6 from being taken during the testing stage, but the folks at AMC must have noticed them.

They are both twin turbo? Is that right? If the 4.4 V8 is, you'd figure it'd be more powerful, although 400 Hp isn't bad at all.

It has 30% more cylinders, so logically it stands to reason that it would have 30% more hp. Sounds right on to me, as far as a hp increase over the 6cyl.

400hp/450lb-ft of torque is plenty for me. Not to mention BMW engines always feel more powerful than their specs. The new V8 will be an absolute monster.

actually an allroad, or volco xc70 is EXACTLY the same thing concept wise as the amc eagle, not the X6

Golfer

3.0L TT Engine Producing 300hp means that proportionally the 4.4L TT Engine should be Producing 440hp {If the 4.4L Engine was as efficient as the 3.0L}

Simple Math.

195,
HP. tends to lean towards my analogy and the torque seems to go with your logic. However, I'm sure you'll agree that the 400 h.p. rating is modest to say the least.

actually the interior is not small at all. It just provides the appearance of it. I sat in the one at the Chicago Auto show. I am 6'2" and my friend is 6'3". We both had plenty of room. Actually we agreed that it appears to be more room in the rear seat than the X5 ...

I saw this at the NYC auto show as well and I liked it. I am not a "truck" guy, but I kinda dig this. Now, for the price, I would not pick this up new. It seems a tad overpriced, but that is just me.

For $70,000 I could find quite a few different cars that I would rather have.

A new segment? Try looking up Infiniti FX, Porsche Cayenne, LR Range Rover Sport, Hummer H3 Alpha.

The dress and panties may be new, but the idea is very old.

What? Are you serious? +6? You people are frickin crazy !!

Infiniti FX- Absolutely a sporty SUV, but nothing more. Not in this league at all.
Porsche Cayenne- Thirsty, Ugly & as expensive as a small house
Range Sport- LR3 with different body, Slow, Thirsty, Unreliable, Expensive.
Hummer H3 Alpha- The standard for automotive excellence.

The X6 looks a million times better, is faster, more modern, more features, better handling, better build quality, more refined, the list goes on......than all the SUVs you listed above.

"The X6 is going to be a sales failure."

God I wish I could put money on that somehow, because you are going to be eating those words in a year or so.

Especially since this 335i owner is probably going to trade out for an X6 maybe 3 minutes into my first test drive. What a masterpiece!!!

The car is muscular, beautiful, modern & totally BMW.

I guess I wasn't referring to whether or not you like the particular designs or whose overall driving dynamics was better. The basic vehicles share the same basic descriptions. Expensive, sporty, 4WD, smallish rear storage, 4dr, sport-car-like overall design (sans Hummer & LR), etc. I don't understand why the FX wouldn't be a direct competitor...both it and the X6 are like raised sedans/wagons with 'swoopier' rear-ends that can run with other sports cars.

The X6 has this "NEW model 'thing'" going for it now. But once it's driven...comparisons will to the list of SUVs I mentioned whether they're better or not.

Thinking the X6 has created a new market is a bit arrogant and very short-sighted considering the average demographic will cross-shop it with other SUVs and wagons.

As I read all these comments I can hear BMW's stock soaring to record heights.

Just the fact that all of you lovers and haters are talking about them so much make me love BMW even more.

Like it or not they are surely the most innovative and controversial of all automotive brands. They lead in style, handling, and technology with some of the smoothest, most powerful engines in the world.

If BMW builds it the rest will surely follow.

Saw it in a neighbouring showroom. It was white and looked just like in the pictures. Means no improvment. Looks low, front end is styling is very busy and ugly especially those bumpers and fog lights section looks oversized and bland. Cayennish. Inside looks smallish and tight.

They also had X5 displayed nearby and it looked and felt so much better.

It is more efficient. It prodices 450 lbs of torque. The key is the fuel economy will be high also vs the Jaguar which will get a horrible fuel economy ... Twin turbo is also a better balance for an engine vs a supercharger.

and likely the engine is underrated, same as the 3.0TT is. Dyno tests have shown 330hp and 330lb-ft out of that 300/300 motor, so I wouldn't be surprised if the V8 was making 450hp stock.

Saw one of these being tested not far from SC. Asked the two guys driving this "Thing" why? They shrugged their shoulders. Said why not just get an X5 for power or an X3 for whatever if one needs an "SAV". This thing has less storage space than my Cayman!

Im sorry, TybeeZ4, let me get this straight?

You saw a BMW X6 being tested near their South Carolina facilities by two BMW employees. You asked them "Why?"...which makes no sense at all. Why what? The BMW employees then shrugged and told you to get a less powerful SAV (X5) for power or an X3 for whatever. Wow, that really sounds like an amazing conversation.

People that purchase the X6 probably wont give a crap about cargo space. If that were the case, then you get an X5. Pretty simply.

But I dont believe for a second that anyone driving around in the X6 would talk down on it.

Also, your name says Z4 in it, yet you own a Cayman????
