Earlier this week Hyundai teased us with a teaser image of what was said to be an upcoming large-luxury sedan from the Korean automaker. We now have more details along with this spy video from Auto Motor und Sport.

Hyundai executives have confirmed that the car you see in the video below (check it out after the jump) is indeed a companion model to the Hyundai Genesis that will compete with the like of the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Known internally as the ‘VG’ the car is expected carry Hyundai’s Eqqus badge when it hits the markets.

Power will come from the 2009 Hyundai Genesis powertrain lineup including the 290-hp 3.6L V6 and the 375-hp Tau 4.6L V8. Pricing details have not been revealed as of yet but the car will arrive in 2009 as a 2010 model.

Maybe take on the Lexus LS, but no, not the 7 series or the S class..

BMW and Mercedes are light years ahead of Hyundai..

To Homer007=Jethro Clampett

If you had read my comment it says "Maybe take on Lexus LS", not "would take on".

You must have skipped out on your Weekly Reader when you were in primary school or else you could have comprehended my comment properly.

this car will not end the 7 series nor the sclass...this car is competing with acura if anything they need to step the RL up because honda will lose sales over this hyundai. maybe this will end the smiling beak RL.....lolololo

This car is KIA VG (Amanti replacement).

It's Hyundai Azera based FWD and designed by peter Schreter (former Audi top designer).

Hyundai's new Lexus LS fighter is called Equus code name "VI".
VI will be RWD and AWD, have 4.6, 5.0, and 5.5 TAU engine with 380hp to 450hp mated with 7 speed tranny.
Equus will come with options like lane recognition system, radar controlled cruise control, and maybe self parking system.

Let the games begin again!

I would take an LS over the 7 and S.

bulldogz, I agree with you. MT, I wish ppl would just ignore you. You probably dont even like Lexus. You just make these comments to anno the idiot BMW fans that wont just ignore you like I do. And why is there so much resentment of Lexus. Get over them. Way to much negativity towards them that isnt called for.

MT,

Then how come I had to take my LS in because of an issue whereas my S still hasn't hit the shop aside from regular maintenance? Like I said YOU KNOW NOTHING! Lexus aren't all reliable. No company is 100% safe from that.

My S-Class is still everything an LS isn't. I feel much better pounding up the highways in my S than in my LS.

MT, I speak from experience. You base your comments on what? online reviews? youtube videos? what?. Please stick your head into the real world and take a dose of how things really are.

Still consumer reports don't speak for all. Like I said before I had to deal with issues with the LS so what does that say?

Enough said.

Let me throw this out there - is Hyundai doing the right thing here? This and the Genesis are such a departure from there current stance. Should they have created a new upscale brand? They have made great strides in the commuter car world and have a great market plan there. I just don't see people who buy MB/BMW/Lexus/Audi even looking at one of these due to the "old" image of the company. It could be better in all aspects and still the average consumer will not buy it over the others.

well that could be said of Audi also, as their old image they had is awful......they just got started fighting in 1994, and they for many years made awful cars even years after 94....I honestly think Hyundai maybe should have badged the cars Genesis under the Hyundai nameplate, and a seperate model designation

The car in this Video is Front Wheel Drive(FWD). A FWD vehicle does not compete with the BMW 7-series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Hyundai is picking up it's pace pretty quick. Their like the Lexus back in the 90's trying to establish itself. Look how far it's got. Don't doubt Hyundai's capabilities. Their marvels when it comes to electronics (LG & Samsung) so we just never know how far they'll go in the automotive world.

I agree with Agent63 in the fact that they have the technology to get things done! They just have to get people to think past their brand name. When thinking of Hyundai, people tend to think of an economy car that has little personality.

I've looked at and sat in one of the Genesis Sedans and I think that for the money, they are VERY Nice cars (we have an 04 E500 Benz that I kind of compared it to)! We'll just have to wait and see if they live up to the hype!

If you stop and think where Lexus was a few years ago, and that's where Hyundai is now. I always root for the underdog........well most times, but this time I will for sure!

Hey Quantummatrix...forget the light years buddy, that does not mean much in today's advance technology, anybody and everybody can get their hands on the goods. MB, BMW, Audi, and even Lexus just went backwards into the future, and now your have to deal with Genesis in today's world...LMAO!!!...this will be interesting in the near future how this will turn out. Remember kids the more Euro rides you buy, the more the Euro companies loose money!!! It's a common fact with all the top Automotive Euro Corporation Execs admit is happening today!!!....LMAO!!!!

Auto0001

Lexus was very different. Lexus dictated the design, sales style, and most importantly how the luxury client was treaty. The revolutionized the industry.

Toyota made a brilliant and logical decision to create a new brand. Toyota spent time learning and understanding the luxury market and buyer. Most importantly the didn't have a Elantra sitting next to their flagship.

Hahahaha HondaJapan you amaze me. Your childish mind is quite interesting. Lexus is got something tough to fight now. Hyundai will not even touch BMW or Merc sales. Same cant be said for Lexus however. When Hyundai brings this out. Old people looking for something boring will have to chose between a Lexus or a Hyundai while established people seeking the pinnacle or luxury and performance will either buy a 7-Series or a S-class.

Your name suggests that you are one of those Honda drivers getting fed up of being embarrassed everytime you see a superior german machine drive up next to you at the traffic light.

Have fun with your Honda! If thats possible.

Anyone who truly has money, no matter how many people here claim not to be badge whores, will not buy a Hyundai instead of a BMW or MB.

However, stands a good chance against Lexus as they lack prestige anyway.

I dont think this can take on what the Germans offer. This would be nice to take on mid-entry level luxury car, but we all know Hyundai for its eco cars, not tier 1 luxury car competitor.

HondaJapan, auto001, teknik are all the formerly deleted member "Staar" who only knows how to trash the superior German Car Makers.

Got news for you HondaJapan, All of the German Cars I've owned: BMW (4), Audi (1), MB (1) have been by FAR SUPERIOR to the Asian Cars: Lexus (1), Acura (1), Honda (1), Nissan (1), Mitsubushi (1) and Infiniti (1)

They were all crap and loaded with problems when compared to the 4 BMW's and the one that I currently own now.

Remember, there are some people that have also owned Japanese and German cars and have said the exact opposite.

Also, I don't think that you should be comparing Nissan and Mitsubishi or even Acura to BMW or MB. Infiniti of Today is quite different from Infiniti of just 5 or 6 years ago too.

Hyundai is a very ambitious company, to say the least. It is funny to think of this as a 7 series competitor but you have to start somewhere. Look at where Lexus started from and how they have managed to move their brand forward. It takes time to build a brand. Don't even think for a moment that anyone would consider Hyundai a true BMW competitor. In a hundred year what will the market look like? A lot of people on this site take pleasure in trashing car makers' efforts to move ahead and expand themselves. In the US, one of the great things that Americans pride themselves on is the ability to do just that. It's part of the American dream. Work hard, produce good things, make it to the top, etc. If we all sat back and just let the status quo happen then life would be boring. I applaud Hyundai for this. At least they have the balls and smarts to do it.

I don't think so !

While this company is on the move and makes some very nice cars, they can't compete in the luxury segment.

The Hyundai name just has too much baggage.

Also, when all manufacturers are looking to make smaller fuel-efficient cars, why is Hyundai trying to make V8's.

Do you know what I think is funny? When Hyundai announced they would build a car to compete with the LS, everyone on here said "Yes, they can do it". But when they say they'll build a car that will compete with the 7-Series, everyone laughs and says "yeah right". What's the difference? The LS is an excellent vehicle. I would classify it in the same league as the 7-Series which means that if you all think that Hyundai will be the downfall of Lexus, ultimately you believe Hyundai will be the downfall of BMW. I still don't think Hyundai can even run with this class of cars, so I'm not worried, I just think the double standard is ridiculous. Both cars can out match Hyundai any time, any where.

Kut17, Lexus would of been the downfall of the Germans, but weren't despite making reliable...but sadly no character bland vehicles. Hyundai however, making similar cars but yet again cheaper could indeed steal sales away from Lexus and make them s**t their panties.

One thing people don't seem to understand, and one thing that will never change is...BMW and MB are luxury through and through, they are not a company within a company so to speak, they have always made luxury cars and set the benchmarks to which others aspire, the original is always the best just like clothing, and in my opinion will always continue to be the way, who wants a "fake" really?
