Spy Shots: 2008 Audi RS6
Audi’s current A6 has been on sale for almost two years now, but we’re still at least a year away from the release of the potent RS6 super-sedan and Avant. Originally thought to debut at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show, latest reports suggest that its release date has been pushed back to June next year.

The BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 have already proven there potential in both the sales race and on the track, but we’re still waiting to see what Audi can do to topple the former RS6. Commonly referred to as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, the original RS6 sedan was chosen by many motoring mags as the pick of the bunch over the BMW and Mercedes competition.

Very nice indeed! There are a few thing worth mentioning here:

- typical RS exterior styling (double exhaust - big, wider track, even lower, diffuser,..)
- typical RS interior styling (RS-style gauges with little dots instead of small stripes, RS steering wheel, ...)
- also notice how they fully integrated the piano-look on the MMI screen and gauges section. This is normally only available with Audi Exclusive.

The tacho goes to 6800 rpm, which is lower than the 7100 rpm the S6 has. This leaves no doubt that we can expect a turbo-charged engine. Gearbox will probably be the new generation of ZF 100ms automatics. It will be able to handle the huge torque that this car will have.

I can't wait! I will definitely test drive on of these when it comes out!

Engine specs are absent but I hope it will get a supercharged 4.2 V8.

Now that's impossible. On every spy video one can CLEARLY hear the Lambo V10. A supercharged 4.2 V8 DOESN'T make any sense! For starters, it's smaller in displacement than the S6 which is not good for prestige and marketing reasons. And why supercharge it? The previous RS6 had twin turbo's and it worked fine, no one EVER asked for more bottom-end torque...

You're not making any sense in my opinion.

Hey hey hey... Don't jump the guy like that... He made a mistake, big deal... No reason to call anyone an idiot! If English is not his primary language, it is a very honest mistake since in many countries TV and magazines don't know the difference between a supercharger and a turbo charger, or at least how to translate the two things right...

EnnNorak: A Turbo charger is the one driven by a small turbine powered by exhaust gas which then drives a compressor wheel, the supercharger is powered by the crank shaft and don't have a turbine... Audi don't use super chargers... The only major german manufacturer to do that in recent years is Mercedes and their AMG arm... But even they have resorted to turbos instead of superchargers (kompressor) since they don't take up as much of the power of the engine. The supercharger in the SLR, for example, take more than 100 horsepower, but up the power like 200 hp... A turbo charger is way more efficient... And it also let the engine rev more freely and higher than with a supercharger since it just bypasses some of the exhaust gas, via the wastegate, if the boost pressure gets too high (it also stabilizes boost pressure)...

Sevor: The days where only superchargers provided low end torque is long gone! Just look at the torque curve of engines like the 2.0 TFSI or the 3.0 TT DFI in the BMW... Or the old RS6 for that matter... The engine in that thing was a torque monster and would mash your kidneys whenever you as much as thought about touching the accelerator!

I don't see how the M5 is going to stack up against the RS6...It looks better, will perform better, & will be more exclusive than the M5.

LOL.

That's how it was with the old RS6, too (well, I don't know if it looked better- your call), and the RS4 vs. E46. What happens, happens. It's all a big game of leap frog, a big joke.

I don't know who would pick an M5 over this at all.

The E39 M5 has always been a tad quicker than the RS6 (when driven properly) . The RS6 was too heavy and it had a slow 5-speed auto.

Incorrect. Every magazine I've read has the RS6 anywhere from 0.3 sec to 0.6 sec quicker.

Top speed is different, too- I don't really know which one is faster overall.

If I was in the market for a BMW M5 or Audi RS6, I would definitely choose the Audi RS6. Simply it just look way better, I'm sure they both perform really well on the street. I'm not sure which is better thought because I never driven any of this before.

Anyone here have driven both and tell me the experience you have, which one performance better? thank.

No one have driven the new RS6... and the old one isn't anywhere near the E60 M5. I've driven both, and the old RS6 is really nose heavy and only available with an old-fashioned tiptronic gear box... Which wasn't the best choice by Audi IMO...

Nose heavy? Got that right. On a wet track or in fast bends it understeers like crazy.

Sailor, why would you compare the E60 to the old RS6? The RS6 was only on sale for a year, at least in the U.S.

And something tells me, after the fabulous RS4, that Audi won't mess this one up- it will be an amazing handler.

TheSailorTheSailor - 5/25/2007 5:43:00 PMView My AgentSpace
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Well... He asked for a comparison of the two, and that is the only cars to compare... You could compare it to the E39 M5 instead, but the result is basically the same... The RS6 was faster, but it didn't handle nearly as well as the M5 (far from it actually). But that comparison is just as invalid since Audi and BMW keep leap frogging each other... This makes it impossible to make a proper comparison since the newest will always be the better (though that wasn't completely the case for the RS6).

I agree that the new RS6 will be something completely different, having driven the S6 on a test drive once, I am positive it will be a great handler actually...

I hope you're just being sarcastic. Audi has accomplished many things in their existence up to now. The engineering of the quattro was just remarkable.

Audi isn't laughable but I do love BMW as well.

"amazinBimmer," your posts are laughable.

I am a country-clubber, in a way. I quit my membership at a tennis club to join a more comprehensive country club, which is in the process of rennovation. I am the kind of buyer BMW is after, and guess what? We've looked at the A8, 7 Series, S-Class and LS. Together! How crazy is that? An Audi! LOL! What a POS!

Of course Audi makes POS. The R8 only costs $110K, has more street cred than any BMW has and not to mention the V10 has already been spotted testing on numerous occasions.

I know that 500 horsepower sends tingles down your spine AmazingBimmer.

M3 convertible? Have you lost your mind amazingbimmer?

No enthusiast gets a convertible because the body structure is less stiff, there is increased body roll and the acceleration is slower. Get a clue....

Re turbos vs, supercharging, I simply don't trust turbos because they used to have all sorts of problems like bearings not being properly cooled. One cannot assume that Audi will never use a supercharger. A red flag goes up for me whenever a high-speed mechanical device is continuously exposed to high operating temperatures and is not made to aerospace specs. As for cars, the only turbo I would trust is the one in an expensive Porsche as it uses better, more exotic, high-temperature alloys. Simplicity contributes to reliability so my first choice is a normally aspirated DOHC engine and I prefer supercharging over turbocharging. Efficiency is not a priority for me but reliability is. Please note that some current production Jaguar and Ford models currently use superchargers as does GM's little Cobalt SS. Also, VW has overcome the annoying turbo lag with its new "twincharger" engine which has both a turbocharger and a supercharger on the same engine.
