Spy Shots: Watch out RS6, here comes the BMW M5 twin-turbo
So while everyone is drooling over the brand new Audi RS6 Avant with 580 horsepower (understating the true figure of 600hp) that will be shown at Frankfurt this week, BMW is busy doing BIGGER and BETTER things.
Take a look at these latest spy shots of an extra-evil looking BMW M5 with, what spies say, twin-turbos. According to the photographer who took these pictures, the engine sounded more powerful and larger than the regular M5. If you take a closer look inside the lower intake openings, you’ll notice a vertical flap which redirects the air flow into what looks to be an intercooler for a turbo. Not to mention the extra vents on the top of the bumper indicate something amazingly powerful under that hood.
Of course we expect this baby to produce close to 600 horsepower so the Audi RS6 better not get ahead of itself just yet.

They will start off by adding Brabus parts as factory options. I remember seeing that 1000 torque SL on top gear... then again that engine was rebuilt from the ground up.

The question is if AMG will respond. So far Mercedes has not responded to the 335i.

You are completely correct. As I recall BMW pitched a bitch when MB was making all the supercharged cars. They said they wouldn't resort to super or turbo charging because it would be uncivilized. Now everything thats gonna come out of BMW is gonna be turbo charged.

Geez. Then Audi's going to add a supercharger...on top of the existing turbos. Then BMW's going to counter with plug in batteries to add torque. Then Audi will counter with a jet engine. Then BMW will counter with nuclear fission. Then Audi will counter with nuclear fusion...I'm out of ideas. Just coincidence I ended with Audi...right ;)

i thought it was funny also, but i wonder where it will end also, 600hp in a from the factory sedan is pushing the limit of sanity. its crazy though when there were reports that the CTS-V was going to get 600hp people were saying that was rediculous why would you need that much power in a sedan, and now that the rs6, has that much there is no problem...ironic

I think it should end NOW. Instead of making the next versions with 700hp, how about keeping the tiny 600hp engines and trying to make the cars lighter/more tossable? Now THAT's a concept.

Once again, not that I am saying it's bad or anything, BMW are great cars, but Audi's RS are pushing BMW;
RS4 came out: V8 4.1L, 8250 Rpm, FSI
BMW delays intro of new gen M3, brings out M3 with very similar engine...
RS6 comes out, BMW puts turbos on his V10.

s4 don't flatter yourself, even with 507hp the M5 will be the better drives car when compared to the rs6. tons of hp means nothing at all. That is no measure of the quality of a car or diving experience. Anyway the RS6 is a tank with a curb weight close to 4500lbs. The M5 is lighter no matter how you slice it and it has a beautiful high revving engine. The M5 is such a balanced car, the rs6 will have noting on it in terms or driving dynamics.i don't really care what your response is I like BMW you like audi for whatever reason, which i don't care to know. anyway. i don't think thats a turbo M5, its probably just a test mule for something else.
even "if" it where a turbo motor it would be better then the Audi conterpart. BMW has won 29 awards in various categories in the international engine of the year awards since 1999(thats what you call superior engineering).....Audi won 1 in 99 in one category, and im pretty sure it was a vw developed motor.

The RS cars have hardly perfected it, the RS4 is a great car but lets wait and see if Audi can continue the trend with the RS6 before we say they've perfected something that BMW have been doing for over 20 years.
Engines are usually take years to develop also. The twin-turbo three litre was in development for 4 years, who knows how long this new engine has been in development, so you can hardly say this is a direct response to Audi's newer models either, more an anticipation of where the market is going.

Mercedes Do not need to be worry about this. The AMG 6.2 engine have more power than the BMW V10, in fact it is able to produce more than 530HP with natural aspiration (and a lot of real Torque), if they add turbos (twin), or compresor, it will will reach more than 700HP and that engine is several pounds lighter than the M3 v8.

The 6.2 AMG V8 is a homage to the legendary 300SEL 6.3 which won at Spa and Le Mans I believe. An advantage of bigger displacement is extra torque.

The Lexus IS-F will obliterate that thing. Sell your BMW stock. Lexus will run them out of business in about 10 years, along with MB and Audi. In 10 years The only car that will matter will be Lexus. Five years after that, Lexus will run Ferrari/Lamborghini and every other exotic car maker out of business. It's only a matter of time guys , the writing is on the wall.

I agree. 520-550hp seems likely, but what's less likely is another update for the current model. This could be the next-generation M5 with the current body. Think about it- there's only two to three years left for the E60.

It already has 525-530 hp in real life. At the crank. BMW used 507 hp for marketing reasons.
That's why it can keep up with a Ferrari F430 from 0-200 kmh.

I am a BMW enthusiast through and through, a fully fledged, paid up BMW fan boy, and BMW owner, twice over... this however saddens me - if true.
Don't get me wrong the idea of a near 600bhp M5 is very appealing to me. But I didnt want it to happen this way... it's like we've given up on making proper engines and are now just going to take the easy route an bolt on a couple of turbos... JUST to so we dont loose face in the horse-power wars! It's stupid blatant one-up-manship - that kind of thing is fine for AMG, it's what people expect... but I didnt want to see BMW get sucked into Audi's horsepower games, I'd thought BMW were better than that.
Like i say don't get me wrong, I'm gonna love the final product, but it leaves a bitter taste to know that we're stooping to Audi's levels.

"Stooping?" Do you know how much power Audi could have made out of their engine without using turbos? It just makes it more efficient and more easily tuned.
At this point, BMW is just playing catch-up.

There's nothing wrong with forced induction. BMW has been doing this for years in their diesels or the legendary 2002 Turbo and Formula One as well. Sooner or later the M GmbH would be tempted to use them. Who cares? The engine response of forced inducted engines has improved so much you couldn't tell it was a blown engine you're controlling.

I've nothing against the M division using turbocharging if the results are spectacular, however, I remember reading recently that the M division would not be taking a move to using turbo's lightly, as it would go against their core values.
M cars have always been about so much more than just straight line speed.

I thought BMW publicly stated that Audi was not a direct competitor, but rather its only competition comes from MB and Lexus.
So why do they feel that they have to "respond" to the RS6?
Also, didn't BMW refer to superchargers and turbos as a cheap way to gain horsepower?
So really, in the end - who is BMW following?

I dont think its a Twin Turbo engine. Based on some of the marketing material that i have read, videos i've seen about the R&D group and the overall vision of the oompany, i just dont see it happening.
Not much to prove here, the HP battle will most likley be a short lived hype given some of the new standards the german top 3 have must abide by these days. I see BMW investing in smaller cars, more fuel efficient cars and a Supercar to compete with the R8 segment. leave all that for the tuner companies, share a piece of the cake BMW.

This HP race is getting out of hand..
Turbocharging kicks major ass in all aspects, but id rather have a screaming NA V10, with true linier power. And turbos tend to muffle the exhasut and intake quite a lot, just listen to the 911 TT....dont tell me it sounds better than a GT3 !?
Medium sized (3-5 L) highly tuned NA engines all the way for me, even though i like the big kick in the ass with turbos...

I'll have a go at it...The GS-F is around the corner and Lexus is keeping a keen eye on this. The GS-f will have a hybrid V-10 that put out 650 HP and get 40 mpg.
Now, as for the real car, the M5, I think that the v-10 might just be enlarged, if not a 6 liter V-12. But it would be nice for a M5 CSL, that would be the baddest ride out there...

GS-F, there's been no real talk about this, only speculation. I don't think it would be wise for Lexus to produce such a car as I can't see it selling very well. The IS-F makes sense as it caters to a younger demographic.

BMW created this segment no doubt M started in 1972, Audi copies in 1992, this is your typical Audi and Lexus owners naturally emotional support the cars they drive. S4 responses earlier Audi perfected the luxury sport segment. " of course you would say that you drive an S4" most people when they buy an Audi by a front-trak audi ( two-thirds of audi customers) and if audi perfected their RS cars maybe they would sell in the, US the largest market for M cars and AMG.
