Stud Or Dud? NBC Releases Details On The U.S. Version Of Top Gear
Television and radio comedian Adam Carolla, champion rally and drift racer Tanner Foust, and TV construction guru Eric Stromer, will lead NBC’s pilot of the international smash hit series “Top Gear.” The production will begin later this week.

Produced by BBC Worldwide America, the U.S. version of the hit franchise will mirror the UK show’s irreverent humor and camaraderie between the three presenters, epic races, outrageous stunts and challenges, unique celebrity guest participation and eccentric methods of testing cars.

"This franchise is a proven winner worldwide and the hosting team of Adam, Tanner and Eric that we have brought together for the U.S. version offers a perfect match of humor, insider know-how and priceless track experience," said Craig Plestis, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming Development and Specials, NBC Entertainment. "We are going to create a high-powered show that, like the original, will keep viewers in every demographic clutching the edge of their seats."

“These three guys will get to drive the world’s most amazing cars, go on incredible road trips and blow stuff up. It’s a dirty old job but someone has to do it…why didn’t I get the job?!” said Paul Telegdy, Executive Vice President, TV Sales and Content & Production, BBC Worldwide America.

Jeremy Clarkson, executive producer and host of the UK “Top Gear” said: “This is fantastic news - but how on earth you lot are going to do it on the wrong side of the road I’ve no idea.”

Adam Carolla

Television and radio personality Adam Carolla is host of the daily, nationally-syndicated radio program “The Adam Carolla Show,” based out of Los Angeles’ KLSX 97.1/ FREE FM. With partners Jimmy Kimmel and Daniel Kellison, Carolla created Jackhole Industries where he produced and starred in two hit Comedy Central shows, "The Man Show" and "Crank Yankers." Carolla also co-hosted the nationally-syndicated radio program “Loveline” with Dr. Drew Pinsky for 10 years, as well as its TV version on MTV. Carolla also recently wrote and starred in the independent, award-winning feature film, “The Hammer.” In season six of “Dancing with the Stars,” Adam became the first ever contestant to complete a Paso Doble on a unicycle. Carolla is an avid car collector and owns several classic collectible Lamborghinis, Maseratis, two Ferraris and an Audi S4.

Tanner Foust

Tanner Foust is in high-demand as a stunt driver, with film credits including “The Bourne Ultimatum,” “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and “The Dukes of Hazard.” Foust is a winning competitor in rally, drift, ice racing and time attack with multiple champion podium placements including the 2007 X Games Rally Champion and 2007 Formula Drift Pro Drift Champion. His varied race experience includes open wheel competition, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb (2002 - 2004), five Ice Racing championships and the 2005 PGT Rally Championship. He also holds class lap records at numerous U.S. road courses in Time Attack. In addition, Foust also hosted “Supercars Exposed” for the SPEED channel. Foust’s car of choice is a tricked-out M3.

Eric Stromer

Eric Stromer, host of the HGTV show "Over Your Head," started life in construction and remodeling houses after a short acting career as a soap opera hunk was abruptly ended by a Styrofoam boulder on the set of “Santa Barbara.” For 20 years he ran a successful building company before becoming the face of HGTV’s hit show. He’s a regular on Adam Carolla’s nationally-syndicated radio show giving out construction advice, and also appears on TLC’s “Clean Sweep,” NBC’s “Three Wishes” and is a special correspondent for “The Insider.” Stromer prefers his Camry hybrid.

Dud, just look at the hosts. This show will be what to the real Top Gear as what NASCAR is to Le Mans or even Formula 1. It will be nothing more than a derivitive of the lowest common demoninator in terms of intelligence like the channel Spike.

Maybe they should have hosts who know something about cars! Looks like a marketing show for the car companies! I doubt you would get the honest opinions that the Top Gear guys give. Top Gear has less manufacturer influences since they are a public TV show.

You can thank America's Capitalistic TV companies for what I figure will be company oriented opinions, meaning nothing bad said. See the BBC is government owned. So they do not have interest in the almighty advertising dollar (pound in their case), which is why so many candid things can be said on Top Gear. Here I can guarantee that there will be no honest answers or witty opinions that might sting a company. Can you imagine Carolla saying, " This Ford Focus we just tested is the biggest turd log I have ever driven". No we can't imagine because more or less, this episode would have been brought to you by Ford. I think if NBC, or any US TV company should have just made a car show... and not called it Top Gear cause Top Gear fans I think will be mortified. I know I already threw up a little when I saw the guy I used to see on HGTV, some damn home improvement show.... yeah I will trust his car expertise!! Hell he said his favorite car is his current CAMRY HYBRID! While this is not a bad car, to be your favorite.... sheeze... I smell cancellation before it has even started. Hell any of us on here would be better candidates to host, myself, Agent001, Agent 009, hell anyone who blogs on here.... with honest car opinions.

This is the best America can do in a car show? Carolla swills beer and talks about boobs. The other one can show you how to put up a shelf. And then there's tanner, god love him, he can drive, but then what...
Good news the American stig could be Drew Carey!

Adam Corrolla = only time will tell
Tanner Foust = maybe
Eric Stromer = no way; my wife watches his show. I'm defintely not a fan of the guy.

I still think Seinfeld should be part of the show. Top Gear is going to poo all over the U.S. series.

Seinfield and Leno are the only 2 that I would like to see on Top Gear, and even then it wouldn't come close to the crazy antics of Clarkson and Hammond. There is a good reason why Leno turned down the role. This show will be an abomination.

Tim Allen would be cool, If anyone has ever watched home improvement you'd see he'd create some cool iseas and things, like clarkson and them di with the amphibious vehicles and the stretched limos. Those were funny, and soccer with the VW and Toyota micro cars was cool also. I say Tim Allen, Jay Leno and maybe Steve Colbert.

The current show is on BBC America ripped to shreds to fit the commercials in.

Being a Brit but having lived in the US for 20 years, I get torrents of the episodes. The humor and commentaries are simply over the heads of middle america unfortunately - some due to the language differences and some due to the fact that it is simply intelligent programming.

I'm all for the US version and will be interested to find out who will be the US Stig.

"some due to the language differences and some due to the fact that it is simply intelligent programming."

I have to agree with you to some extent about Americans not being very receptive to intelligent programming. Look what happened to the "Arrested Development" tv series; canned after 3 series because of ratings. The majority of people just didn't 'get it'.

"The Office" is funny but IMO, nothing comes close to "Arrested Development".

On the face of it this does not sound too promising. However,it really get's down to chemistry between the 3 hosts and how well it is scripted. This is going to have to be an American show with American wit. The biggest mistake would be for them to try an emulate the British version. I wish the British version can be shown over here without re-runs.Perhaps if the American version tanks BBC America will get the message that we want the original version.

Just away to capitalize on American Consumer trends, kind of like Nike sneakers. Hybrids are the buzz words these days, why not make a TV show about this hype and generate new revenue streams.

Ever hear the experts talk about cars? Their testing criteria tends to be rather silly, not real-world. Autoweek the Canadian program on PBS is about the best I’ve seen.

I’d rather see a 24 hr TV station like MYV, with people testing cars for various applications, not measuring the miles per gallon on a round trip to the corner store to fetch a newspaper and a quart of milk.

Adam is a funny guy, but I don't think he knows more than me about cars. He just has more money and is able to use his influence on the Hollywood crowd.

Sorry to say no show will be as entertaining as Top Gear. 5th Gear comes in a close second for me. Those are the two top shows in the world that I know that reviews cars.

An American version I'm not too sure about. Maybe if they start reviewing domestic brands and favor it more than the Europeans the domestic fan boys will watch but realistically I don't see it becoming a hit. I COULD BE WRONG THOUGH.

I do want to see what type of format they run on the show.

Let's see a few episodes first and then judge it.

I'm not a big a fan of the original Top Gear since it gained success by feeding the insecurities of the little guy instead of taking a serious approach to reviewing cars. Always throwing ridiculous remarks about rich people and their "toys" in an attempt to make the masses feel better about themselves and their miserable life.
I'm hoping that the American version will be more of a professional approach to the car world instead of this "let's make the monkey laugh" that Clarkson kept doing for years. A rich, snobby guy like Clarkson making the masses feel like they are on the same side when in fact he is exactly at the opposite side of the spectrum. HE is exactly the type of person that he pretends to hate in the show. Oh, the irony.
