Study: Drivers waste an entire week in traffic every year
According to a national study released today the nation’s drivers hung out in traffic for a total of 4.2 billion hours in 2005, up from previous years. That means divers supposedly waste nearly an entire work week each year sitting in traffic on the way to and from their jobs.

The study also estimated that drivers wasted 2.9 billion gallons of fuel while sitting in traffic. Together with the lost time, traffic jams and delays cost the U.S...

Glad to see we are still in the top five for worst traffic. Way to go DC!!!

When will all these companies realize that you can do just as much work from your home as you can in the office (probably more because you are not constantly bothered by co-wokers).

Honestly what does everyone do when they get into the office...turn on their computer and check their voice mail. What do they do the rest of the day, take phone calls and type e-mails. So why can't you do that at home? Your boss wouldn't have to worry about you calling out sick all the time, you can cut the outragoues daycare costs in half, and you can save on food costs, your stress and blood preasure would be down, you can devote more time to your home and family, you can produce a better quality of work, etc., etc., etc.

Truly a two to three day office work week is all you need...sure you might have to go in on your days at home for meetings, and I'm not suggesting you have no social contact with your co-workers or clients, all I'm stating is that we start looking at how the world operates in the 21st century and realize that the work week established in the 20th century needs to be modified to fit the times...or else the above numbers will do nothing but get worse.

Can't wait for the 3 hour 15 mile commute to work that will cost me $30 in gas... one way. Heck over the past 20 years I've watched my commute go from a half hour costing .75 a gallon to 2 hours+ and $3.15 a gallon. This has got to stop and telecommuting is the answer...when will people listen.

There is no greater thief than one who steals your time. This is the best example of incompetent past planning for the future. It's time to fix it with a higher gasoline tax and use the incremental revenue for highway expansion and other infrastructure improvements for the exclusive benefit of motorists.

Stop quibbling about spelling. I end up with frequent spelling mistakes due to typing too quickly and/or corruption of internet transmissions, failing wireless keyboard batteries etc.

When my wife and I drove up from a vacation in La Jolla San Diego we did great until hitting LA traffic.

It did feel like it took the better part of half a day to get from Laguna to Malibu traveling on Pacific Coast highway and the other non highways.

Reminded me of home.

Anyone on this website who has ever driven 95 or 270 South or 66 East in the morning on a weekday, understands what I'm saying.

apparently, since my dad moved jobs and houses, he has to deal with the 2nd worst commute considering he works in VA. you should see 495 morning AND night. turns the 30 min. commute returning to a 1 hr+ nightmare.

Discounting vacation and holidays I only take 3 days and 4 hrs of DRIVE time without sitting in traffic. It used to take me 4 times that just driving to my old job. There should really be INCENTIVES for people to move closer to their work location. This would diminish traffic, pollution, wasted productivity, less stress, increase family time, etc. Due to my change of jobs I now have time to work 40 hrs, take two classes at school (P/T Masters Engr), go to the gym twice a week and still manage to be home early enough to spend time with my family. Per day, I now work an hour longer at work (and make more $) but also have more free time. Did I mention I do not need to get on the highway to get to work.

A reform is most unlikely but people should really look at the benefits of living close to work.

I remember the days of living in the city. That was the most fun I ever had...and your right, the commute was simple, just hop the metro (trains for everyone else). I didn't even have to put miles on my car to get to work and it saved me a fortune in gas and insurance...not to mention stress.

Unfortunatly with what has happend to houses over the past 5 years, it has become impossible to purchase a house in the city without looking at a 7 digit price tag (even with the recent reductions) in a community where I would let my child walk outside. I'm sorry but I do not make 500,000 a year to pay twards that type of a house, nor do I have enough for a 20% down payment on a house like that, just lying around. And neither do most people. Thats why it's "move out to the country" or keep paying slum lords in the city who charge a mortgage payment as it is.

Crappy choice.
