Subaru working on a diesel Impreza STi?
Do you really care about fuel-economy when you’re looking to purchase a car like the Subaru Impreza STi or the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution? Well Subaru thinks you do. The guys over at AutoExpress have learned that Subaru is working on diesel version of its rally-going all-wheel-drive hatchback.

Subaru will first offer its new 2.0 liter 4-cylinder boxer unit producing 148 horsepower in the Impreza range this September. The company may use a tuned version of the engine producing 180 horsepower in a racy STi version.

Torque is expected to be bumped up to...

Rally cars need torque, Diesel provides torque more effectively through the power band due to increased boost pressure and higher compression ratios (which both translate into a higher BMEP)

I'm surprised that Subaru isn't capable of 100hp/liter, especially with the flat 4 configuration (its very well balanced and has low frictional losses) The only things I can think of:

-packaging limitations that prevent the use of large VGT Turbo
-packaging limitations that prevent the use of a large intercooler and EGR cooler.
-difficulty meeting emissions requirements due to inferior combustion modeling/control (most likely).

a lot of people seem to forget the STi and EVO are RALLY Cars, which means they need torque. Which means they are better off with Diesel engines if properly tuned. its a good idea IMHO.

what kind of blunt statement is that? you do know that it has some of the best AWD systems right next to audi and are very useful to those in the NW and NE? and they've also built the 1st boxer diesel engine. and they've been very sucessful in the WRC, especially when colin mcrae was alive.

the best AWD systems I think have mitsubishi in its lancer evo becouse it can vector torque not only from axle to axle (active center differential) but also between rear wheels (quattro and subaru system can`t).Of course honda sh-awd system also can and now bmw (in X6) and audi also will have this but mitsubishi have had this for many years

Now Subaru seems to be going in the right direction with its engine technology, hope Toyota takes a leaf out of its sister concern. Toyota engineers are a bunch of twats, havent done anything on the diesel front except for the 2.2ltr engine. Kudos Subaru!

@ Josh

As I stated to Lexus_Admirer yesterday, convince Toyota to stop producing diesel engines for non-American markets first. Ya know...since it's so dirty and bad for the environment.

Hmm, perhaps they should follow the Germans. Which up until recently is what all other nations have done in the automotivr world.

And with BMW and MB developing hybrid diesels, the Germans will continue being in the lead.

Correction - 2.6L. Twice the combustion cycles per crank rev. So its technically doubled. ;)

personally I think anyone with a brand name in their user Id is probably a bit of a fanboi douche. No offense to the fanboi douches in here, but how about being a little sane instead of saying things like "insert brand here will always have the best insert attribute here" give me a break. Any brand can easily fall of of whatever high-horse they are on.

Nice, but would actually prefer the diesel STI engine to be put into a Legacy. Performance, decent looks, and economy; what's not to like.
