Switzerland proposes banning sports cars
Switzerland’s political system, like that of California and several other states and nations, allows for individuals to propose legislation upon the gathering of enough signatures to support the bill.

One such proposition by the youth section of the Swiss Green Party would ban all vehicles weighing over 2.2 metric tons (4,820lbs) or emitting more than 250g/km of CO2, among other restrictions.

The law would effectively eliminate the vast majority of the SUV and sports car market overnight.

I feel like the Swiss Green Party is related to the Communist Party. Why should the government dictate what types of cars the public can buy?

Thanks for that article -- I'll be sure to buy a non-swiss watch next time. And you know where the Swiss can stick their chocolate as well. I don't know what the Swiss are smoking these days but is must be something very nasty when they would prefer a wealthy person to be chauffeured around in a gas-guzzling Phantom or Maybach instead of having him drive a more thrifty lighter sports car of equal status.

The government already dictates what car you can buy. Have you noticed that you can't buy any of the cool European cars, or any of the tiny ones from Europe or India or Japan?

This is not a big stretch compared to the restrictions that we already live with.

The Swiss Youth Green Party cant even afford sports cars, and now they are proposing a ban?

Communists are the biggest HATERS that I have ever seen. They cant stand the thought of others being better off than themselves

You guys are a bunch of idiots. If you ever have gone to Switzerland you'll realize that the country is beautiful and clean for a reason...because people want to keep it that way and they take measures to do so.

And they are not communists you ignorant morons...they are democratic than you'll ever be. Learn a few things about their system before you act like stupid racist American fools.

Yes and BMW, Benz, and Audi all have very different looking cars right? Let's add Porsche to the mix as being the only car manufacturer that has been able to make the same car over and over again for the last 50 years to probably the dumbest of all crowds...but MB, BMW, and Audi follow closely.

Any government that attacks motorists should fall. I've seen the greenies march in protest of various things -- they are a disheveled misguided bunch of ne'er-do-wells who will never amount to anything. They have come to my door with their purple hair and pierced eyebrows looking for donations against nuclear power not realizing that nuclear energy is one of the cleanest energies around.

yeah...I figured you'd come back with a stupid attack since you'd have nothing else to say about Switzerland's overall high quality of life and quality of the country. You'd only sound more and more moronic.

By the way, I live for getting boosts...(sarcasm off).

How was it a stupid attack? Its perfectly valid and highlights your incompetence and ignorance nicely for everyone else here to see.

I never dissed the Swiss people, you need to learn to read or go back to school.

nozferatu, when will you admit that it is wrong for the government to dictate what you can drive. I don't give a damn about the Swiss standard of living -- their quality of life sucks if the government can be so intrusive in the private lives of their citizens.

Coming form someone who's government can arrest them at any time with no trial and listen in on any and all communications you make with no warrant, that is rich.

Do you know that it is lawful for the USA government to separate the citizens into male and female groups and relocate them into work camps! Current US law!

As far as being in danger from ones own government, the citizens of the USA are pretty high up on the list !

Keep dreaming if you think Swiss quality of life sucks.

What you don't understand is that their GOVERNMENT equals their PEOPLE....you know...GOVERMENT = PEOPLE?

It's a strange concept for someone living on the States but I'm sure you'll get it sooner or later if you think hard enough.

Trust me, your country will fail far sooner than theirs...even while you can lease any car you want...

Enjoy.

Switzerland is a democracy.

If the majority of Swiss choose to do this they should. ITS THEIR COUNTRY, they should be able to. This is democracy in action

To apply other country ideals is imperialism.

This is just stupid but seriously, you dumb Americans shouldn't blame everything on the communists because look at the Capitalists like Rockefeller or Bush?

They say tapping phones is ok, harrassing people is ok as long as the harrassment was done by the US GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

There is no such thing as Democracy in this world. Always the ones who have money have the power. America is a good example.

MercedesBenz00Z, I don't see why you have to be anti-American just because of
Bush and some of the things attributed to the Rockefellers 100 years ago. America saved Europe's ass during WW2. All of Europe could have ended up under Soviet occupation had the U.S. and other allies not moved as quickly as they did to occupy the western part of Germany.

I agree that money and power rules but the U.S. is still the number one country on the planet and people are lined up to live there.

EnnNorak:

Uhh...most of the people these days lining up to come to live here are bottom feeders of their respective countries...not exactly what I be proud publicizing about who wants to come to the US.

Most people who do come here have one thing in mind...money. And that's it. Not to better their lives socially, or improve their quality of life...just make more money.

And the number one country? In terms of what? Weapons and military? Sure...another great thing to be proud of I'm sure.

Any self-respecting person who has traveled the world will never say what you said. The US is so far behind most other countries in just about all respects (from products, to healthcare, to you name it) that it hurts.

You're living in an illusion if you think the average Europe, Canadian, Australian, etc doesn' live better than you.

And sorry...being able to lease a BMW for $399 a month doesn't equal better quality of life.

The swiss have the right to do whatever they want, even if it is moronic to some. Commenting to the contrary is truly about your own agenda, and reflects nothing about the article. Maybe the Swiss will all own electric supercars, thats there right if they decide to do so.

Everyone knows this won't pass ... today. But that's not important.
What most on this forum are missing is the big picture:
Although North America and Europe are different, you'll find that North American youth have more in common (in their ideals) with European youth than with North American baby-boomers (who are currently ruling government, business, etc).

HOWEVER: within 2 decades the boomers are ALL gone, and in just 1 decade we will be deep into the transition of power from the aging boomer/hippie generation to the youngsters who worship "vintage clothing", think riding a bicycle to work is a cool statement (especially in cold and slush), and mostly have little recollection of, or interest in, things like the world-wars that shaped international maps and politics.
In general, they think about "me" and what impacts "me" directly, often without looking at indirect cause/effect (like, how does my food get to the store/restaurant if there are no trucks on the road?)

Think about it. This is just a hint of what is coming to the US in the near future!
