Hmm, if you option up everything except the active cruise control, it goes to about $52,225. The base price of the S5 is expected to be at about that price.

I SAY GO FOR THE S5

S5 will come with a lot, a lot, a lot standard. I think the B&O stereo will be one of only three or four expensive options; most of them won't be on dealership cars, but you'll have to custom-order.

how about comparing the 335xi and the A5 since those are priced the same?

and then let's compare the M3 to the S5.

Because that is not what Audi intended. The A5 is a 328 competitor, the S5 is a 335 competitor and the upcoming RS5 will do battle with the M3.

In terms of price you are right- you have to compare the 335xi to the A4/A5
In terms of performance I am afraid the 335i/xi is in the S4/S5 category.
I guess that is what makes the 335i/xi a very interesting bargain.

enthusa ... you cant compare the S5 to the M3. That is not even close to a comparison. The S5 fits in right between the 335 coupe and the M3. Unfortunately for Audi, they didnt build a competitor for the 335xi coupe. The regular A5 will compare in price but is nowhere near in performance. S5 is more in terms with the performance of the 335, just doesnt handle as well and costs a little bit more. The S5 is nowhere in the same league as the 6-series by BMW ...

You're right, the S5 drives better, looks better AND costs less than the 6 Series.

To be honest, I think all of that is true. I'd much rather have a 3 Series coupe than a 6 Series at this point. The 3 looks and drives better, too.

There realy is not comparison necessary. BMW is the clear winner on all fronts over the VW.

IMHO, the S5 is more of a competitor for the 6er. Better performance, much better looks, and a far better value.

Interesting.
I wonder why the S5 that is about 5 inches shorter than the 650i and 2 inches longer than the 335xi will be a natural competitor to the 650i and not the 335xi?
I wonder why an S5 that is about $20K cheaper than the 650i and about $7K more than the 335xi should be a natural competitor to 650i and not the 335xi?

I wonder...

The S5's general personality is more along the lines of the 6 Series; it's a relaxed cruiser that just HAPPENS to have excellent handling. The 335i is more youthful, but the S5 is sexier and more sophisticated. Different buyers.

I'm not really sure why Audi positioned the A5/S5 models like they did. It seems as if they don't target any BMWs directly- but that's fine with me. I'll still drive both and see which I prefer. The 335i was my favorite sub-$100K until the S5 came along... but I haven't driven either, so I can't be sure.

david989 We all know the S5 is no real competitor for the IS-F the only real competitor for the IS-F is the Bugatti Veyron, and the IS-F, is sooo much fast out handles it, has a higher top speed, a nicer interior,etc.......

lexus fanboys HAAAAAD to rear their ugly heads in the middle of a thread about .... anything.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting sick and tired of the constant "IS-F" BS from these fanboys. Maybe it's time they had to fess up and admit they are all driving Corollas, not E90s or E36M3's or any of a huge list of the REAL & really awesome cars some of us are lucky enought to actually OWN & drive all the time.

SO STOP IS-F**-ing around!

Anyone who agrees wit me is a real car enthusist. BMW is for rela car guys. Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, Toyota, Aston Maritn, Jag are for posers who hate driving.

To BenzW124 -

Dictionary.com defines enthusiast as: a person who is filled with enthusiasm for some principle, pursuit, etc.; a person of ardent zeal. Last time I checked, you didn't have to drive a BMW to be enthusiastic about cars. Furthermore, I'm not sure why you seem to believe that BMWs are the pinnacle of all automobiles.

And finally, when my 135i finally arrives, I'll see you and your overpriced 335xi at the track anyday!

the s5 is slightly more expensive than the 335i coupe since it is worth more than it, simply put. you get what you pay for. they are functionally nearly identical, but the s5 is nicer in quality of materials and elegance in design with superb fit & finish.

I agree. Not only that, but you get the excellent torque and sound of the S5's V-8 engine. I thought my car sounded good, but now the S5 makes it seem muted- and that's just from watching videos! I can't wait to drive it.

The Audi is nice, but I would go with the 335xi.

Did someone say Audi, Lexus and Aston Martin's are for posers? I love BMW too, but it must be sad not being able to appreciate other sports cars.

Enjoy your life in a bubble.

It's very close. I prefer the looks, luxury and power of the S5. Screwy numbers regardless, the S5 will FEEL a helluva lot faster. However, the 335xi is a better bargain and will probably have slightly better handling. Not to mention the massive tuning potential of the twin-turbo engine.

Hm. I'm going to drive both. And when I say I "prefer" something about one of them- it's not like it's a significant gap. Both of them are so evenly-matched in almost every respect. But I think the interior and the exhaust note of the V8 justifies the extra $10K of the S5.

Is the 335xi at dealers yet? I'm going to go with my son to drive a few BMWs tomorrow.

When all is said and done, there is no "best" car between the two.

No one on this board can do anything but speculate, because they've not driven the cars back-to-back on thorough, long-term evaluations. Moreover, since the numbers on the cars are practically identical, personal preference is all we have to go on. ... and biased opinions are hardly worth discussing.

I imagine that on some other enthusiast site someone is claiming that their blend of straight, pure black coffee is superior to the coffee from one plantation over. Well, go ahead and argue. I'll be out driving.

This is a silly review, The S5 outpreforms the BMW 650 its only bmw rival, AUDI since last year celebrated 40 years perfecting the 4 wheel drive system, Which has taken them very far and made them reputable as to have Lamborghini want to encompass their quattro system in their models who outpreform Ferrari's on the Nurburing Track. Here are the Links to stats for S5 and BMW 650. 335xi should be compared to a benz 4 matic, not a prestegious all wheel drive company.
