Would this be the 1st turbocharged M Car? Some might disagree but, I think this is a good move, I know 2 people who have owned both an E39 and an E60. They both love, the high-revving V10 in the E60, but hate the gas mileage and miss the torque of the E39. A twin turbo V8 will add a ton of down low torque to that 540HP and probably with far better gas mileage.

If BMW were to put a twin turbo V8 in the M5 I don't see why they wouldn't use the M3's 4.0 as the basis. It seems almost perverse for M to use an off the shelf motor. Leave that to Audi and Lexus, even AMG doesn't do that anymore.

I wouldn't have a problem if they went from the V10 to a V8. The E63 (and other AMG cars with that 6.2L V8) has proven quite formidable in performance.

The new M5 will be sick, but the car in the photo I think is the new 550 with the 400hp V8, b/c it has a sunroof and the same pipes as the X6 and 750 test mules with the V8.
Anyway I heard that the new 550 will be as fast as the current M5, which explains why there is an M5 chase car.If the V8 X6 can get sub 5 seconds to 60 this car will fly.
And that means the M5 with 540hp, the new M5 when it surfaces with most likely lightweight construction and new techs should be an amazingly fast, and capable supercar.

I didn't proof read the last sentence, it should be.

revised--And that means the new M5 with 540hp,when it surfaces will most likely feature lightweight construction, and the latest technologies which will help make this an amazingly fast, and capable supercar.

The V10 in the M5, even if replaced with a V8, will be a highly sought after model one day. [Just like the other M5's]

Why would an M5 driver care about fuel economy? If you've got the money to buy an M5 you can afford it's fuel. If they can increase power and efficiency great, but there's no reason to make fuel economy a priority.

It looks like the article says BMW is stressing compliance with emissions regulations, not necessarily the buyer's concern with fuel economy.

M...do not think so...M3 V8 heavier than C63 engine, then M5 V10 heavier than the M3 engine. BMW will use V8 plus turbos to keep wheight down, improve torque and millage. However is better for everybody to hold your breath until you see the final product, for now RS6 looks better than the new M5 and is the king of the hill and I am talking AMG Fan.

Sounds okay; a beefed up version of the new V-8 twin-turbo.

However I'd like to see BMW stick with a V-10 for its M5 & M6 variants, use the V-8 for the M3, i-6's for any M car smaller than the M3, & possibly (If it were to ever see the light of day) a V-10 or even V-12 for an M7.

This in a sense would act as a hierarchy if you will that works well justifying the price of a higher M model over an almost equally performing cheaper M model.

I love the M5 but I can't see this as a move in the right direction. What made the sedan so good is the fact that it had a high-revving v10 in it - few cars revved as high let alone sedans. We will see but I think I'll stick with my 4.3 liter screamer.

Its a pity they have to abandon the V10 and revert to turbo-charging but stricter emissions regulations seem to be dictating this rather than the manufacturers themselves. According to the article the existing V10 will only be allowed to stay in production til 2011 because of these regulations.
