Test Drive: Is A Toyota Land Cruiser Really Worth $80K?
In the movie “Out of Africa,” Denys Finch-Hatton’s 1923 International Harvester stalls on an open savannah amidst a herd of seriously cranky water buffalo. After a few nervous minutes tinkering with the engine, Denys tells Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) to manually crank the engine. It explodes to life, and they continue their illicit journey into cinematic history. Substitute a Canon DSLR for Blixen’s .416 Rigby, and in my mind, I’m there. As for the Harvester… what about an all-new 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser?

Sticking with the cinematic theme, the new Land Cruiser’s sheetmetal is still as tight and creaseless as a Hollywood actress’ Botox-pickled brow. Subtle fender bulges give way to doors as expansive and flat as the Serengeti itself. The big rig’s deadlights and turn signals are integrated into massive light clusters, flanking a supersized grille, sporting the now familiar Schick shtick. The sidelights’ silhouette now tapers sportingly; a single failed attempt to ameliorate the off-roader’s overall blockishness.

Seeing as the LX570 base price is 73,800, I don't think the Land Cruiser will even be tempted with the 80,000.

Land Cruisers are typically about 8k cheaper than the LX... so do the math...

"fastonekiller"

These are base prices for the 1-series, for a loaded one with options, your looking at over $40,000

Who actually buys a basic BMW with no options?
Come on now.....

Its overpriced. You should go and sit in one. The whole interior is made from EXTREMELY cheap plastic, the engine is underpowered (270hp 4.7l V8, same as the old one here in the UAE) and it can win any ugliness contest. Toyota are ripping us off, but some people are blind enough to buy them!

Yes it does, in the US, but as JUGNU is talking about the middle east (which is where Im from), the LC comes with the 4.7l carry over from the old generation. Which is cr*p.

This represents 'price gouging' at its worst.

Sure, it's a capable off-roader, and probably pretty well put together, but in NO Way Shape or Form is this an 80K Vehicle.

At best, it's a 50k SUV when fully loaded...

I like the design of the new Landcruiser, but my problem is simple.

Toyota has OVERPRICED what was once an affordable and capable offroader by turning it into an expensive and probably less capable (more comfort-oriented suspension) offroading luxury car.

The Landcruiser was never a luxury car. Why Toyota, why?

the 80 series and previous gens.in the US were also available in stripped down versions, but more ppl kept buying them in upscale trims. so toyota sends LCs in higher trims. plus I think the 4runner is a much better deal. the last LC was more interesting imo.

no this isn't worth 80k and I'd like to see them bring back the stripped versions and maybe a diesel. I love the land cruiser but toyota is moving in a diff direction here. I also like the gl320 which is also a great deal.

The Range Rover and LR3 have better specs offroad.
There is simply no denying the facts:
LRs have better -
approach angles, departure angles, breakover angles, better wading depth,
higher ground clearance. Better crawl ratio.

Specs ALONE, the LR owns the LC.

Don't believe me? Look at the specs on Toyota's website.

Toyota's only claim to fame is reliability. I question that now in light of the numerous
Tundra recalls and problems (Today they just announced a recall on the transmission).

The interior is worst than the previous one. Don't believe me? The door handle are cheap hollow plastic.
Same fit and finisg as a Corolla. People bitch that Corvettes have Cobalt trim and bits, Well, this has Corolla and Yaris trims and bits.
The wood is fake on this 80K truck.

This article is TTAC at its worst. First off, there is no reason to spend $80K on this vehicle. If you want all the bells and whistles, fine, pony up, but then dont complain. And if the dealer has a $5K markup, then that is only because they are flying out the door. Check another dealer. I mean really. It's like they went out of their way to spend as much as possible, so they could include it in their review.

And let's talk mileage. Conveniently they only reported the lowest (city mileage) with no context. Context like, what does the RR get, what does the LC get on highway, and how does the LC achieve massively more power while achieving the same mpg ratings as last year.

TTAC is more of a hater site the autospies.

This vehicle is without peer. Most of the world will snap them up in droves. The only thing is, in the US, only diehard LC fans will buy it, as most who want it will opt for its Lexus twin. Toyota knows this, and appears to have priced the LC accordingly. They only plan on selling a few, but the buyers of these select few will know they have something special.

Y'all just keep whining and moaning while the juggernaut rolls on.

Second opinion: Where ? In Germany the cost of the Prado is more than $80k. The LC costs 70,000 euros, which is roughly $100K, so the US pricing looks like a steal.

"The new LC doesnt even deserve to be called new. Its the same friggin' thing, with 10 year old stlying, and costs way more at least here in the UAE. It actually costs almost as much as an escalade. (250k dhs for the LC, 270k dhs for the Escalade) The interior is the biggest disapointment. Its worse than the old one, and Im not even kidding. Cheap plastic EVERYWHERE like the centre console, door knobs etc..

And thats not it! The engine is the same from the old generation! 4.7l V8 270hp (What age are they living in?!) and even though this may be only here in the UAE, its still a very stupid move, especially at this kind of price! The more I see of those on the street, the more I realise how many Toyota badge wh*r*s we have here!"

It's a damn good, well engineered reliable off road vehicle but definitely not worth $80K. Well Consumer Reports Magazine says the Mercedes B. ML, GL C, E, S class aren't really worth a dime as they are completely unreliable. The Range Rover built by Land Rover is a complete piece of crap. The BMW X5 is unreliable same goes for the VW Toureg. So I guess that leaves the Lexus LX570 and the Toyota LC.

The currency and Product placement price all over the world is highly increased amongst nations all over the world, compared to the united states, an example of that being in the third world this car would cost double the price of 80 thousand, This car would retail in brazil for at least 170,000 Dollars. So as far as price goes, 80 G's is no consideration as to the Benifits of having a Vehicle, So the real question is are the capabilities of any SUV including the Toyota Worth 80 G's when the Hummer is only 30 G's more expensive.

M53R Stop it. First go and learn fully about the all new Land Cruiser.

The new Land Crusier is available in 4 engines, 3 petrol plus 1 Diesel here in Middle East.

GXR V6 4.0

GXR V8 4.7 (yes previous VXR 4.7 V8 is changed to GXR 4.7 V8 in order for the 5.7 V8 to wear the VXR badge)

VXR V8 5.7

(an all new 4.5 V6 Diesel and the the 4.5 I6 petrol engine is discontineud).

and do u know there is a huge waiting list for the all new Land Cruiser. People loved and accepted it so well. I see so many everyday.

My freind recieved his a few days ago, a white GXR 4.7 V8 with beige interior and it's clearly a big improvment over the last. It costs him Dirhams 220K.

U r just a toyota hater and as usual bashing it.

Unlike the Range Rover, the Landcruiser has never seen a service shop before. The previous Landcruiser was also indestructable, the same can't be said about Rover.

I believe the LX and Sequioa are twins. Perhaps the Landcruiser is a variant now.
I've been arguing with you long enough that you should know I wouldn't care if they call it a Lexus or Toyota, on most vehicles I actually prefer the Toyota name. I'll take Altezza over IS anyday.
