The 2010 BMW X4 Caught in Testing
No, the above mule isn’t a planned Outback or Allroad variant of the 3-series, our spies indicate it is in fact a mule for a planned smaller offering, the X4.

Christa Lehmann over at Hidden Image has cracked off a few shots of an early (yet remarkably cohesive looking) X4 prototype, which should, as its rumored nomenclature suggests, slot in between the X3 and X5.

X4???
Isnt the X3 based on the 3 series as well? What would be the point of having two similar models competing amongst themselves? I think this is just a repalcement of the X3.

I prefer that to giving a model some name that the marketing guys dreamed up. At least a letter or number designation promises a specific size hierachy. Named models are subject to a form of brand abuse by moving a known higher brand to a smaller inferior model down the road. Back in the sixties I worked for a company that thought they were getting a certain full-size Mercury model as company cars and Ford moved that model name down to a new smaller Mercury. I got so angry about this that I parked the car 2 blocks from the dealer, popped the clutch at full revs and promptly broke the driveshaft. I walked back to the dealer and they gave me a full-size Turnpike Cruiser model for a few weeks (the one with the retractable reverse-slanting rear window). I moved on to bigger and better things shortly after and the problem was gone.

What the hell??? How many SUVs do we need? This is useless! So stupid! BMW cannot be everything to everyone, so they shouldn't try!
