The 250 million dollar shrine for car freaks?
Starting in October, about 170 vehicles a day will be delivered to the cathedral-like showroom at BMW Welt (BMW World, in English). Rather than picking up a new car at a local dealership, drivers who pay a little extra for the privilege come here to receive delivery of their vehicles, finding them bathed in a spotlight and rotating on a turntable.

Even in a country famous for its worship of the automobile, rarely has so elegant a form been harnessed to so mundane a function. “Our dealers are like local churches, while BMW Welt is St. Peter’s Cathedral,” said Michael Ganal, BMW’s director of marketing.

It may be good marketing in Germany but does not work for me. I don't mind car shopping in a huge modern airy dealer showroom that has all the models to look at but would not pay a penny extra for some sort of Saturn-like ceremonial delivery.

enn .. what are you talking about? Doing a euro delivery via BMW's program is a great way to save money and pick up your car in Germany. You wont be able to buy a car in the US for less money. I know BMW is not really your flavor of choice, since you have to pay extra for the different colors and that doesnt make sense. find your logic humourous

This will make Euro Delivery simply the most memorable delivery and ownership experience money can buy.

BMW is copying the Lexus Experience for delivering cars to customers. Lexus started this trend and BMW is just copying it as expected. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Lexus is killing BMW globally.

Ahem, Lexota is copying BMW. BMW has been doing European delivery and driver experiences since Lexus was nothing but a wet dream of Toyota.

I did BMW Euro delivery 5 years ago, this is a new FACILITY not a new program.

so your telling me that you can go to japan to pick up your is250 and see it bathed in light rotating on a turntable? wtf is this "lexus experience" you speak of?? never have i heard of a japanese delivery. i have heard of european delivery... but never japanese.

You two are ignorant fools. Lexus is the class leader in everything it does. Sport, style, interiors, brand prestige, performance, luxury, quality, reliability, price, value, global appeal, consumer recomendation and the list goes on. Name me one European car that satisfies all these criteria. There is none.

so we are ignorant because you are wrong? how is it a class leader in everything? its not as sporty as its competitors, the styling is bland, the interiors are CHEAP, there is zero brand prestige, and zero global appeal... in my native country of india people have never even heard of Lexus. Almost everyone and their mom knows about Mercedes, yet no one knows about Lexus. and you call me an ignorant fool...

I don't care who copied who -- I just want to pick up my car at the cheapest price without fanfare. Paying less money than the next guy is what turns me on -- not some marketing bullshit.

BMW Welt is a BMW museum for connaisseurs who appreciate the history and rich heritage of BMW. You can also go pick your car up.

Mercedes has is, VAG has it for quite some time now (Autostadt) and Porsche is working on one too.

So where is the Lexus museum? Ouch. They don't have anyting to put in.

Damiko, its FREE you stupid shit. Why are you commenting on things you are completely ignorant about?
It is NOT built into the price--you get a 7% discount on top of the dealer discount, to accommodate for taxes as they are computed in Europe.

Until you have something intelligent to comment on, please refrain from making any more comments. Moron.

Lexus, Global appeal? David, you are an idiot. I just spent a month in Europe indluding two weeks in Germany and I did not see ONE Lexus, thats right, ONE Lexus. If Lexus does everything you mentioned then why is BMW still #1 worldwide?

Anyways, that is one indcredible facility. I would love to pick a car up there some day.

Now I get why some people call BMW owner snobs. I mean, check this out: "Hi, I'd like to buy a 545i for 56,000...and you know what else, I'll pay you guys 1,000 more, so I can drive from ______ to Munich for 40 miles and drive back". Hahahahha....puleeeeze. If I could have my car the same day..I'd take it right there and then. Why pay more so your car can be on a rotating platform in a spotlight? I mean, for what? Buying a car is a thrill enough. How about taking all that money and fix the stupid iDrive system? Or better yet, take 250 Million and buy everyone a BMW and personally deliver it <- I thinkg this one makes more sense. Do you guys agree? .....Now flame on.

Its free dumass. You get a 7% discount and then pick your car up in Munich so you can have an experience that is so memorable, you will tell EVERYONE.

boidzboidz - 7/31/2007 12:29:10 AM

In addition to the 7% discount, you get the following direct cash value:
- free insurance and registration for 30 days
- 2 for 1 airfare on Lufthansa
- no rental car fee for your trip

So if you wrap a vacation around it, you save 7% on the car plus, $750 - $1500 on airfare, and $500 - $1000 on a rental car.

And the thrill of driving 125 mph on the unlimited stretches of the autobahn (priceless!)

Euro delivery is cheaper/better value in many ways. The naysayers here are simply "So blind they cannot see."

European delivery has always been cheaper than just buying your car from the dealer. This is a direct quote from the bmwusa website:
"Taking delivery of your new BMW in Europe will definitely make you smile. So will the savings. You may save up to 7 percent of the retail price -- up to $8,220. Those savings may pay for your trip. You'll also save by eliminating airplane, train, taxi, and bus fares while in Europe."
They cover up to you and a guest for the flight, to the best of my knowledge and the money you save from the retail price is enough to pay for the whole trip. This article is completely false...

The BMW dealer processes the Euro delivery sale and does get a cut of it. Also, they get credit for selling the car, but it does not come out of their allocation. They have $0 outlay for financing or floor planning. So to the dealer it's a bonus sale. They love doing it. My dealer told me this when he booked my Euro Delivery trip.

I wonder why the write this in the article:

The owners will get a tour of BMW’s Munich assembly plant — its oldest, which produces the 3 Series compact — as well as vouchers to eat at restaurants in the delivery center.

The compact is not in production anymore. So what cars are they really making there?
