The Battle Of the Fugliest? Audi's A1 Concept vs. BMW X1 Concept Which Is Worse?
We came to you with BMW's X1 Concept images just a short while ago.  Well not to be outdone Audi's A1 Concept images just happen to leak in advance of the Paris debut as well . What a coincidence you say?

Now as you all know I am a pretty hardcore German car fan, but looking at both of these concepts side by side, I see a lot of similarities. However neither of these to concepts do too much to stir my soul.  Actually quite the opposite is the case.  To me both of these concepts look quite a bit like a Toyota Matrix knock off (yeah I said that).  Part of this is due to the size and the obvious limitations of packaging 4 adults in a relatively small upright space.  But never the less I see two German bred Matrix staring me straight in the face. And that is scary.

The reason this is so bad, is becuase we rely on brands like Toyota to come to market with sensible but many times bland vehicles to fill a niche.  The Germans on the other hand will typically stretch the envelope and give us some performance and flare to spice up the mix in the same category.  With neither of these do I see either flare or spice, and that makes me wonder why. A disappointment to me to say the least.

So I leave it up to you tell call me out, and tell if these two concepts are on target.  And while you are at which of the two is the fugliest  of the pack.

Fugliest? I like them both, one more predictable (BMW) and the other unexpected (Audi).

I know there's a strong disdain around here for TALL, but these designers aren't free of constraints from delivering what the public wants. And people want to sit up high. I prefer a more traditional sedan/coupe for ME, but many do not.

In other words, you like fugly cars, right?

I can't decide which one is worst. They both look like they should belong to an American company like Dodge or maybe even Eagle (yes, neither should exist either). The bimmer looks disgusting while the audi looks extremely horrid with a terrible interior.

...yet they both came out of German companies.

The X3 is Ugly. BMW is dead wrong for consistently wraping ugly sheet metal around a great chassis. How long do they think loyal fans will wait before they flip over to AUDI or Merc?
The A1 is beautiful and should not be in this discussion at all, not only because it is beautiful, but also because it is a hot hatch not an SUV. If it was an SUV it would be names Q1 not A1.

Usually we say we put on a hat...but in ab's case, he's probably been dropped on his head so many times he's gotta wear a helmet all the time.

currently i drive both brands and i have to say that i am biased towards Audi and Bmw over any other brand. lately, i've been wondering what the hell are they doing and which brand will i convert to next.

Audi pisses me off with their interiors. look at the new A4's interior and then look at the new RS6's interior, identical isn't it? if i paid $120K for my car, i would not want the guy next to me to have a $38K car with the same exact interior.

BMW pisses me off because lately, they keep putting out the same damn SUV/SAV in different sizes. these things are ugly in my opinion and i could care less what anyone else says.

sorry for the long rant but i had to get that off of my chest.

I dont like neither one they both look like SH*t to me but the chicks is probably loving that they can get an affordable luxury SAV, SUV, DMV, PAV, NAV... or whatever the hell you want to call it

The A1 looks like every other Audi....but hey it has new LED light design so thats probably pretty radical for audi fans. To boring for me.

More so then Audi. All of BMWs grills and head lights are diff. they all have unique lines on the side. They have some common elements but they have very noticeable differences..a 5 dosent look like a 3.Also the interiors from series to series has its own look. If there is an A8 driving at me i cant tell what it is until it passes me...i usually think its an A4.

car750i - i can agree with the A8 comment to some extent but to the untrained eye all of the bmw x's look the same as well. you've got to understand that a BMW fanatic will see any little line difference just like an Audi fanatic will see differences in lines as well.

The A1 and X1 are not even in the same class. The X1 is a mini-ute and the A1 is a small hatch.

Ugliest? what are you talking about!

I do not like BMWs and that is no secret but I would not call this car ugly (like the Z4, X6 and 7-series...they are ugly) and certainly not the A1. The X5, X3 designs are very similar and they are not of my taste but I would not categorize them as ugly. I do like the Audi designs but also do hope that an attractive sport package comes out for the Q5.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that if BMW hadn't shown the X1 in that hideous piss yellow, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Imagine it in black or the A1's gray.

X1 is fugliest of the two. Looks like a mini X5 body with new 7 series front end attached. X5 design theme is stretched a bit too much i think. BMW should have stopped at X6.

and A1, such a small car with that big face. Front end is 90% grille. Horrendous.

I like 'em both.
I'm ready to replace my Saab 9-2X next year and I'm putting both at the top of my list of potential replacements.
Drive, handling and price will be the selection criteria for the winner.

I like the Audi however I would prefer the X1 if it didn't have the oversized grill. Looks fine with Audi's shield set-up but not with BMW's kidney set-up...If the "Bangle Butt" plagued BMW's of last-Gen, the new oversized grill; which I'm calling the "Bangle Nose," is the plague BMW's future.

I don't like the concept of either cars!

A micro car which tries to look like a grown up station wagon... WTF!

And a mini SUV?!?!?!? WHAT THE H*LL IS THAT ABOUT?! Isn't the whole selling point of SUVs that they are big and "safe"?!

That being said though, I don't think that either one is ugly at all! They look a lot like their bigger siblings and they are definitely not ugly by any standard! A bit out of proportion? Maybe, ugly... No

The X1 is so nice, a very good car for europe it has the right size, looks way better than the X3.
The A1 looks ugly, weird design in front and back.

Looks like they both took design cues from Infiniti FX, EX. The side profile of the X1 looks very Infiniti like.

X1 is horrible. it looks good in the rendering pictures, but it real life it is lumpy and unproportioned. the only good thing is the rear. the A1 looks ok but a bit boring
