The Bottom Falls Out Of Audi Sales In August, Down 16% For The Month
Audi of America announced today auto sales for the month of August totaling 6,406, a decrease of 16% from last year’s figures. Despite strong economic headwinds, Audi new vehicle sales in the U.S. are down just 3.7% year-to-date.  Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales continued to grow with another record-setting month; compared with last year’s August figures, CPO sales rose to 2,841 units, up 20.8%.

“We have a strong portfolio of all-new models which has helped sustain interest in Audi and drive showroom traffic through this otherwise tough period,” said Johan de Nysschen, executive vice president, Audi of America. “Our Audi dealers were so successful in selling down our 2008 model year A4s that our inventory came up a bit short to satisfy consumer demand.  The all-new 2009 model year A4 vehicles are arriving now.  Based on sold orders and consumer interest through our website and at local dealer launch events, we expect strong demand for this segment-leading sedan, and excellent sales for September.”

The Audi 2009 A4 models are arriving in dealer showrooms now and are all-new.  Based on government data and independent test results, the 2009 A4 2.0T leads its key competitors in fuel economy and 0-to-60 miles per hour acceleration.

Nationwide, several Audi models sold well.  The Audi A6 model line sales increased significantly, up 88.4% over last August.  Dealers recorded a record sales month for the all-new A5 due to improved availability, with 718 units sold.  In addition, dealers in key markets noted strong sales, including the greater Atlanta and Los Angeles metropolitan areas and the Pacific Southwest region.

Audi continues to impress industry analysts and other third-party industry watchers. J.D. Power and Associates, the respected industry organization that measures, among other things, quality within the auto industry, recently noted that Audi posted the greatest ranking improvement in initial quality during the 2008 J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey. The Audi Q7, A3, A4 and A6 have also been recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as Top Safety Picks in 2008, earning Audi the most Top Safety Pick designations for 2008 models of any luxury automaker this year.

Audi sold 1,539 less A4s because of low inventory and model changeover. I am sure they will be back as the new A4 goes on sale.

^ Yes but what's odd is that you should be able to get a good deal on them because dealers want to clear the lot for the new ones. Maybe Audi planned the inventory so that it wasnt a problem?

the leases on the a4 were ridiculously cheap around $350 with just 1st month and bank fee and plates at signing.

they went very fast and are gone. the 09 will be high for now and probably go down towards December.

LOL. The Q7 made the "100 Ugliest Cars" list that was mentioned on this site.

On the other hand, the all-new Q5 is a sweet-looking midsize SUV. Once it goes on sale later this year, expect it to make up for decling Q7 sales.

90% of Audi's must be sold in the north/northeast because I see quite a few of them on the road in comparison to other cars that sell high-volume. Do you people in CA ever see them on the road?

Actually I see alot of A6 and A4 but only a few A8's. The Q7 seems to do ok here as well despite the limited number sold.

Cmon, whatthe. I expect that kind of remark from amazinBimmer, not you.

It's pretty easy to tell that Audis are NOT rebadged Volkswagens. The only models that share platforms are the Audi A3/TT and the Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit/GTI, and even then the Audi & VW models maintain differences between them.

Audiphile, the TT rides on a unique part steel part aluminum chassis that has no relationship to Golf.

Not my point on this post (badge engineering). vw has same build quality, features, and style for less.

+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
You're right, steve27t. I don't know that much about the TT because I'm way too tall to fit in it, thus I lost interest in it. I just presumed that, as it was only a few inches shorter than the A3, it was built on the same platform. My mistake.

I'm not surprised. they were aggressive with the A4s over the last few months and depleted the inventory prior to the launch of the new model. I noticed a lot of ads for the A6 last month - the best deals I've seen in a long time - so I'm not surprised those sales were up. What's interesting is that the Q7 numbers suck now - deals weren't that good, and I think people see them as just being too big and vulgar right now - and X5 numbers were way up. And that's without deals that were not too much better than what I got in June.

I can't believe the A8 still doesn't sell...I love this car compared to its competitors.

The thing is that they havent done anything to the A6 to make it better so is advertising really doing that much (88%) for it?

The A6 has a highly supported lease in play right now. They are still shipping 08's at this point because the updated version won't arrive until November in the US. It's mid-cycle update time so new engines are coming as well as a more aggressive look. There is an article on Fourtitude.com if you want to check it out. Most noteworthy is the new supercharged V6 for the quattro cars that will closely match the performance of the 535 BMW.

Maybe they are buying the Mini's ?

Sorry forgot you had a Nobel Prize.... in ignorance.

I made a comment the other day and realized after that some might not understand. In the UK they call french fries "Chips" (as in Fish and Chips).

There is a saying for people like you who seem to have a chip on their shoulder.

Get that SACK OF POTATOES off your back !!!

What's wrong with you and people like MT? BMW make good cars, I like the odd one, but I prefer Audi for various reasons. Audi outsells BMW in some markets (the UK for example).

Not sure shy you have to waste so much energy trashing Audi/VW and the social status of Audi/VW buyers. You obviusly have a big problem, maybe some counselling?

I didn't address it because it isn't a cheaper shittier, fwd car. Your opinion is that it is, but not actual fact. So, why bother addressing it. I'll address you if you actually can come up with a logical and factual remark. I assume they taught you critical thinking and communication at that famous school you attended - Wharton. Your facts about Audi are so way off, you come off as a complete dimwit.

Until Audi decides to make RWD sedans they can't be mentioned in the same breath as MB, BMW and Infiniti. Take a 3 series and G35 out for a test drive and then take an A4 and you'll see how inferior the nose heavy A4 is. It can't handle even remotely as well as the G and 3 series. Audi's are for people who want to say they drive a luxury car but don't realize what makes a true performance sedan. They take them for a test drive and see the pretty interiors and they drive nicely and so they buy them. Audi's are for clueless shallow people who don't understand the fundamentals of performance machines.
