The Mercedes-Benz AMG Winter-Sporting Event 2007
You have to give Mercedes credit - many companies attempt to organize activities that bring together customers of their particular product, but few can compare to the events thrown by the always-impeccable Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Such is the case with the AMG Winter-Sporting Event 2007.

Taking place in Arjeplog, Sweden, the AMG Winter-Sporting Event is a four-day excursion that combines the highest-caliber driver training with a sampling of the local Swedish lifestyle. Those attending the event have use of three different Mercedes AMG models: the CLK 63 AMG, the SLK 55 AMG and the C 55 AMG, and over the course of their stay, are all instructed in the art of driving on less than stable surfaces. Some highlights include slalom and avoidance maneuvers, training on individual sections of the handling course and eventually, graduating to the full circuit of the course. All activities take place on prepared tracks on one of the area's frozen lakes.

The event culminates in an AMG Winter Challenge, in which all participants compete with the skills learned over the past several days. Top performers are then honored at what's called the "Traditional Evening", during which culinary specialties from Northern Sweden are enjoyed around an open fire in a traditional Lappish wooden tepee. Other local activities those attending the AMG Winter Event partake in include a cocktail evening in an igloo and a snowmobile safari in the dark.

Unfortunately, for those of you who'd like to take part in this year's festivities, the AMG Winter-Sporting Event 2007 is already fully-booked. However, starting in January, those of you interested may reserve a spot in one of the 2008 AMG Winter-Sporting Events at a price of around EUR 3390 (including VAT and direct flight from Stuttgart, Munich, Frankfurt-Hahn or Paris) per person.

To learn more, keep reading to see various photos from the event followed by the full press release outlining all the activities in this year's AMG Winter-Sporting Event.

Enjoy.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

AMG Winter-Sporting 2007 - Polar position: honing skills and having fun at arctic training

Affalterbach, Dec 05, 2006
Mercedes-AMG GmbH will once again be offering a unique range of customer driving events on ice and snow during the coming winter: the AMG Winter-Sporting event, which will take place in Arjeplog (Sweden), combines high-quality driver training with a taste of the traditional lifestyle of this region close to the polar circle. The aim of the event, which is run by professional instructors using the latest teaching methods, is to give partici-pants the skills they need to control their vehicles perfectly.

The increasingly popular AMG Winter-Sporting event takes place on eight occa-sions between January and March 2007. The 24 participants in each four-day training session have the use of three different AMG high-performance models: the CLK 63 AMG, the SLK 55 AMG and the C 55 AMG. All the vehicles are equipped with special studded tyres which ensure a certain degree of grip on the ice tracks. ESP® is deactivated in all the training cars in order to allow partici-pants to practice controlling the vehicles at the limit of their handling capabilities.
All driving during the four-day sessions takes place on ice; specially prepared tracks on a frozen lake provide ideal conditions. As ambitious as it is thorough, the programme of events comprises an introductory training section, which gives a grounding in the basic principles of driving on slippery surfaces by providing an opportunity to practice techniques such as slalom and avoidance manoeuvres. The subsequent three-part intermediate training allows participants to develop their vehicle control skills to an even higher standard: they start with training on individual sections of a handling course which corresponds to the short track at the Hockenheimring before graduating to full circuits of the course. The drivers practise drifting – a skill which is a prerequisite for safe, optimum vehicle control on slippery surfaces – on curves with a diameter of up to 150 metres. In this way, the participants can gradually feel their way towards the handling limit in a safe driving environment; at the same time, AMG Winter-Sporting also sets out to deliver the highest possible degree of driving pleasure.
Latest training methods with data recording
During many of the driving exercises, the AMG specialists use data recording to support the training activity: this technology, which is familiar from the world of motorsport, makes it possible to log not only sector and lap times, but also longitudinal and lateral acceleration. All training activities are handled by professional instructors with experience of motorsport who provide the participants with the necessary feedback and use appropriate analysis methods to ensure a successful learning experience.
The AMG Winter-Sporting event ends with the AMG Challenge, a competition in which all 24 participants demonstrate the driving skills they have learnt in selected disciplines. The top performers are honoured on the occasion of the "Tradi-tional Evening", during which culinary specialities from Northern Sweden are enjoyed around an open fire in a traditional Lappish wooden tepee. The other accompanying events are of the same high standard as the training: a particularly dynamic highlight for the participants is the night drive (as passengers) in the AMG Ice Taxi, a specially prepared C 55 AMG. This 270-kW/367-hp saloon has special studded tyres which are also to be found on the FIA World Rally cars in the Swedish Rally. An experienced instructor at the wheel offers an unforgettable insight into driving dynamics on slippery surfaces. A cocktail evening in an igloo and a snowmobile safari in the dark give the participants a feel for some of the characteristic features of the region and round off the four-day event.
2007 AMG Winter-Sporting already fully booked
The full price of the AMG Winter-Sporting event including VAT is 3390 € per participant and includes a direct flight from Stuttgart, Munich, Frankfurt-Hahn, Hanover or Paris, as well as all transfers, accommodation in the Hotel Silverhatten in Arjeplog and meals. All car enthusiasts are welcome to participate, whether they are AMG customers or not.
Unfortunately, as a result of the high level of demand, the 2007 AMG Winter-Sporting sessions are already fully booked. But Mercedes-AMG offers many different driver training programmes throughout the year. Held on racing circuits and test tracks, these courses allow discerning drivers to improve their vehicle control skills. The schedule for the 2007 summer season and the 2008 AMG Winter-Sporting will be available from January 2007. Anyone interested in participating can find the latest information on the Internet at www.mercedes-amg.com or can contact the hotline of the AMG Driving Academy by phone on +49 (0) 7144 302-575.
Arjeplog – the auto industry's test centre
Arjeplog in Swedish Lapland is a global test centre for the automotive industry. Its proximity to the Arctic Circle results in consistently low winter temperatures which make it possible to prepare test tracks on frozen lakes or rivers. The layer of ice is often up to 80 centimetres thick and thus ensures a safe basis for AMG Winter-Sporting.

S4- why wouldn't you look at the CLK63? It's far better than any S4 I've ever seen. I am an owner of a CLK55 and can't wait until i have the funds to upgrade. Audi just can't match Mercedes!

Because the CLK AMG is a car for the wife. It looks girly, it drives girly, and my friend (who has a black CLK500 w/ AMG package) is embarrrassed to be seen in it, now that he knows how girly it is.

I'd much prefer a 911, thanks.

And... CLK may be better in a straight line- but that's it. It goes like nothing in the turns.

S4- you can't POSSIBLY be talking about how girly cars can be if you own THAT COLOR S4! That could be the girliest color out there- even the mercedes CLK (the car for the "wife") doesn't offer a girly color like that. Obviously a 911 is better, its Porsche.

Ha!

TWO of my business partners love the color of my car so much that they just put orders down! One is coming out of a 545i, and the other an LS430! The BMW guy is getting a sedan, with a six-speed, and the LS guy is getting a Cabriolet!

It's much more interesting than anything coming out of Mercedes.

Except the S and CL.

Well, I like most Mercedes. But some just aren't for me. CLK, E, C- all too girly.

Do we really need ANOTHER fanboy on this website? Could you please leave?

We have enough new people who hate various brands, and are completely loyal to others!

Unlike most, I like many cars from many brands...

You're right, the CLK500 doesn't compare to my car.

I rented one in L.A. because I showed the bellman at my hotel a picture of my car, and I said, "I need something like this." He was very impressed with my car, and only gave me a wimpy CLK500. Nowhere near as fast as my car.

A4 >>>>>>>>> C-Class BY FAR

A6 3.2 = E350, A6 4.2 < E550

A8 = S-Class (I wouldn't be able to choose)

A4 Cabriolet > CLK (CLK is overpriced and girly)

Q7 >>>>> R-Class, Q7 = GL

And... why would that be? Audi makes some great products.

The A4 is still a sweet car in its sixth year. It's only bested by the 3 Series in its overall package. IS and G may be faster, but they're not as good.

A6 is a supreme example of style, inside and out. Best interior in class- and for under $100,000, the cabin is only bested by the A8.

A8. There's nothing to say. It's awesome.

RS cars are faster AND better-handling (RS4) than M and AMG cars.

The Q7 is beautiful on the road.

The TT is a world fashion icon and has caused other companies to follow.

I think the only reason you dislike Audi is that you're a badge whore. You've never owned one. I didn't consider owning one until I leased an A6 2.7T back in 2000. I've been hooked on the brand ever since. The S4 Cabriolet is a very satisfying car with torque everywhere, a beautiful interior (as well as a stunning exterior), and a substantial feel, at a not-so-substantial price (compared to girly CLK55 AMG).

I'm most likely going to get a 911 next, but I have an appreciation for Audi that you can't have unless you own one.

I like Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Jaguar, and Infiniti, plus a few Acura models (past and present).

audihateraudihater - 12/5/2006 9:31:31 PM
-3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
S4- wow. where do i start? FIRST AND FOREMOST:
the R/S line cannot be compared with anything from any other company; that is simply not fair.

It was CREATED to be a cut above the rest, and the S models more directly compare with the M from BMW, the AMG from MB, etc.

SECONDLY; if you want to talk girly cars, the TT is the posterchild! I will be the FIRST to admit that the 2007 was an improvement, but it is still a terrible car.

Mercedes and BMW may have copied with the SLK and the Z3(Z4), but at least THEY GOT IT RIGHT.

let's continue this debate, foxy. i will be MORE than happy to take you TO SCHOOL.

BMW 4.8 (im on the waiting list for the new one)
and
an e550 wagon that i just picked up... idk why i have it, i just fell inlove with it.

I, too, diversify.

I own two Audis.

Do you think I bought these cars for no reason, other than the badge? I bought they because they suit me.

I have the S4 Cabriolet of course, an A3 2.0T as a winter car, and my wife has a Lexus RX330. She wants a big sedan. S550 is too big, as is A8L. She admires the XJ8's beauty, but she'd rather have the A8's features and AWD.

When my son takes the A3, I will probably get an X5 3.0si as my next winter car.

In two to three years, I'll trade my S4 Cabriolet in for a 911 Carrera Cabriolet, or possibly a Carrera S if I can get a good deal (a.k.a. under $100,000).

But seriously, don't embarrass yourself and compare her upcoming A8 to a sissy CLK.

We also looked at the E-Class after driving the A8, by the way. An E350 4Matic- she doesn't need the power of an E550. It would be a total waste of money.

She was very impressed by the A8's smooth ride, sophisticated technology and beatiful interior.

She was disappointed by the E-Class. Cheap interior, crude ride (in comparison), ugly wheels (she'd get the Sport Package instead), and an overall cheap, tacky car compared to the A8.

I have kind of a love/hate relationship with Mercedes. Some of their cars are overpriced and underwhelming (CLK, for example), while I love the more expensive models (CLS, S, CL, SL) and know that they're well worth the premium over competitors. I saw the new CL550 in a confidential "basement showroom" at my Mercedes dealer, and was blown away. Bellissimo! The one problem is that it's a coupe-only, so I can't look at it... and I'm not looking at the SL. It's more of a GT than a sports car. I'd rather treat myself to my dream car (911), after years of hard work.

audihateraudihater - 12/5/2006 10:07:08 PM

The E-class is great for its pure versatility. i bought it a couple days before i bought the x5, and immediatly fell in love. The only reason i bought the x5 is because i love the high ride of an suv, and i knew it would be discounted because of the new one's arrival.

I have a family of 5. I need to have cars that can accomidate my needs. I'm a cyclist, i have a 2,300 dollar bike that i need to take care of. The Mercedes e class wagon has proved to be perfect for that.

I belong to one of the most prestigious country clubs on the east coast- i need to look good when i pull up.
The CLK gets the job done there.

Okay. I'll give an analysis of MY life.

I have three kids, too- but two of them are away at school. I have one son at home, who's going to take the A3 in two years.

I live in one of the richest areas in the country, the North Shore of suburban Chicago. My town, in fact, has the eigth-highest annual income in the country (according to Forbes). Not to BRAG (sarcasm).

I need a car that can get through bad weather, go fast AND look good all at once! If the RS4 had come out when I got my car, I would've snapped it up, but the S4 Cabriolet is a wonderful substitute. When I'm parked outside my club, which is swamped with E-Classes and LS430s, I love watching people stare at it, always parked in front, as they pull up. The color is breathtaking in the summer months.

The S4 is great for everything.

Excuse me, it doesn't have the eighth highest annual income OVERALL. That's purely a city subject- you'd need millions of people for that.

However, it has the eigth highest, per capita. If you don't know what that means, it's the eighth highest average income.

I haven't bought a car that costs less than 40,000 in roughly 5 years. My next onjective is to buy a 750Li or possibly a 760i, depending on this year's bonus. I will continue my car collection after that.

I plan to purchase a Quatroporte. I, personally hate the car, but my wife loves it. My thinking on it is that in 10 years, the value will increase because they've sold so few and they will stop making it.

The Quattroporte is beautiful! That's a great choice! A friend of mine has one, and though it's broken down once or twice, she's had a much better time with it than she did with her previous S500.

The 760i isn't on sale any more. I presume you mean 760Li? But I don't think an end-of-year bonus would make the difference between 760 and 750. 750Li is fast enough- you have to really want the bragging rights.

I haven't bought a car for under $60,000 in two years. $40,000 in four years.

Well, yes, that was under. But mind you, it was my winter car. I wasn't in the mood to pay a lot for a winter car, especially if you can get a car as good as the A3 for that cheap.

We have an SUV now, which is part of it. But when she gets the [$76,000, as long as we're bragging] A8, which we will be ordering in January, we won't have an SUV in the family any more. It makes a lot of sense to me to get an X5 as the family hauler. Wouldn't you agree?

They planned on selling about 10,000, this year. It's basically a project car to see if premium small cars sell well in the 'States.

So far this year, it's sold about 8,000 copies if I'm not mistaken.

Yup, it's so stupid. That's why I bought it. Even though it's probably quicker than your E550.

I don't see what's so stupid about it:

1. DSG. It makes the car so damn quick. 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, and only with the sweet little 2.0T engine. Heavier 3.2 V6 version makes no sense.

2. Versatility. Tiny car, huge trunk.

3. Style. Believe it or not, in the A3, almost as many people notice it as they notice my A3.

4. Fuel mileage. I get about 27mpg on a daily basis- in hard driving.

Excusez-moi, "Almost as many people notice it as they notice my S4!"

I just bought a GL on E-Bay. I will be getting rid of my X5, and cancelling my order for the new one. I need to buy the SUV of the Year, especially if its as luxurious as this.

Uhuh, sure. The GL looks like a big, ugly ML, which is a POS. I've always hatted the $hitty ML, and the GL looks just as bad.

I'd much rather have the new X5. That was a stupid move, and you'll regret it!

you need to understand something- i dont have a price limit. i buy cars more often than most people buy shoes! i average a new car every two months, and if this move was a mistake, i can easily fix it. i dont care if it costs me any money. i want the SUV of the Year!

It's a cheap piece of $hit. Only $54K. Cheapskate.

I'm thinking of getting a $61,000 X5 WITH A V6! Loaded! Who needs the V8 in a winter car?

I could get the $70K 4.8i, but it's just useless.

No, not necessarily. I never really wanted you to buy an Audi- I just wanted you to see the better part of them.

As for the rest of your ramblings, did you pull that out of your @ss? Are YOU somebody named Eric who lives in Glencoe, Illinois?

You got my first name, town and identity wrong (I'm not a kid), but that's an interesting story there.

From now on, in fact, you can just call me "Mr. Fox". Everyone knows my last name anyway.

If you don't like Audi, you need your head examined.

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE ARGUMENT THAT JUST ENSUED.

It's somewhat alluring, but not worth reading. I just had a useless argument with someone who doesn't even own any of the cars they said they do. Someone who came on here as a prank- and hopefully we won't see "audihater" again.

You guys are funny!

But you both share a problem. How can you have nice cars like that and not have at least one of them in black? That should be a crime.

super funny argument, but both the clk and the audi cab are girlie. still audi makes good products and so do mercedes, lets find love in the fact that we love german, don't fight for no good reason.
