He also desiged the Daewoo Lanos. Remember that one? Hes one of the best but calling him the designer of the century gives him a little too much credit.

Agreed, and most of them look the same.

Too much credit?!?...so who would you pick...This designer has consistently made some compelling designs that have influenced many car designers, which is why he was the most sought after designer and the reason why companies like Ferrari hold him in such high esteem. Granted the examples given in the article are arguably not his best work, but he has been responsible for many great designs. This man deserves all the credit anyone can give.

Luigi Colani! His designs influenced everyone else. He broke ground for everyone. His flowing organic designs are timeless.

Obviously those cars have seen better days. I wouldn't go as far as calling him designer of the century, either. All of those cars don't look that great, but a lot of old cars still do. Like a Chevy Bel Air (given that it has been restored).

Not bad for the day but definitely not the best in history.

I am surprised you have never heard of him Michael Taylor, he designed the 1st gen Lexus GS or Toyota Aristo.

Is he overrated now???

I'm of Asian ancestry but I give credit to the Europeans for designing the most beautiful cars paving the way for the rest of the world.

My favorite design of all time will have to be the first supercar, the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.

Ford GT40
Lamborghini Miura

just a few I thought of off the top of my head, I am sure there are others! ;)

Whether or not Earl was the best I cant exactly say but as far as I know, Harley Earl revolutionized the car industry by bringing aerospace inspired styling to cars such as tail fins, etc.

A form of Harley Earl's influence made it to most car manufacturers at the time including european marques such as Mercedes Benz's tail fin models or Heckflosse as they were known

He had more influence in the broad industry than Giugiaro who designed individual models without setting any groudbreaking trends.

You did not deserve a deboost for your comment.

You are so stupid..German cars are mostly designed by Europeans. Many Asian cars are designed by Europeans/Americans.
You think Germans are not good designers?
Then why do the Japanese rip off so many ideas from them? Please do explain.

Didn't really read the article but the Carrerra and F360 looked better and more timely than those 5 in my opinion.

I remember seeing the Esprit and the Pantera about the same time (late seventies), and both were stunning then. The Esprit still remains so, aging very well. The Ghibli is also a favorite of mine; unfortunately, shoddy Maserati mechanicals lessened the car’s place in history a bit. As mentioned above, the Miura is also timeless (although not penned by Giugiaro, I believe).

Why is'nt Batista Farina, the founder of Pininfarina, on the list? Anything Pinifarina looks better than a Giugiaro or a Bertone.

Chris Bangle did break ground, and set new trends. It is really unfortunate that other car companies took the idea and made it beautiful for the first time. Ex. MB S550 trunk lid

Chris Bangle does deserve a lot of credit for his designs.

Just a quick question for half the people commenting here. . .

Do you understand the difference between "designing" and "engineering"? Don't get too confused on this one.
