This will be tough to beat- BMW 335i turbo's mind boggling 0-60 test

Forum from Bimmerfest.com states that the 335i has not met EPA emmision standard and would not be sold in some states. Is that true?

Go BMW. After talking about "BMW Power" all those years, they're providing some.

Who doesn't think Lexus and the IS350 is directly responsible for such a huge jump in HP and at such a competitive price?

BMW copying Toyota again!!!
Didn't the Supra Turbo had the same 3.0L inline-6 twin sequential turbo like over a decade ago? And it was making 320hp/315lb.ft back in those days. And the Supra did 0-60mph in 4.6 or 4.8sec.

Why must BMW have to copy everything from Toyota? Why can't they be more creative and stick with their tradition?

sequential turbo on the supra was a smaller turbo for lower rpm then a larger turbo. This is two turbos for 3 cylinders each that feels like a V8 and no lag something toyota could never dream up.

Whoever tanked me ... I didn't say that BMW was copying Lexus because they came out with the 300 hp engine. But competition is good for everyone. Would BMW be doing this now if they didn't feel some competition? (Or are we saying BMW is too above every other car maker to actually have a competitor.)

Lenkun, if you believe BMW is coping toyota with the new 3-series coupe or aything for that matter, you have extremely poor knowledge on the auto industry. Toyota hasn't been making the supra for almost 10 years now, and when they did make it, it certainly never competed with the 3er coupe.

You make the case that BMW must have got the idea for their new turbo inline 6 from Toyota! Buddy, BMW's been making turbo inline 4's and 6's before toyota was even making production car's!

What the hell is this crap ?!
This engine was in developement way before the IS 350 hit the market.
Also this is a balance engine, not a high performance one.
It was build to have good power/torque, good fuel eficiency, lower emissions, lower weight, and no turbo
lag.

wow, how many times do i have to say C&D is a magazine that's test results are bought (per-say). They take money from the manufacturer to make their car look great in the test. You won't find that number 4.9 in any of the other magazines.

looks good though! Although I am not a bimmer fan. Why did they have to go the turbo route, its almost like cheating your way through performance(shortcuts), always thought BMW was king of the naturally aspirated.

can anyone say infiniti G35, they were the first Japanese company to go nuts with horsepower. I also believe that if you want a real comparison the G is much closer to the BMW than any Lexus.

Well I believe, correct me if I am wrong folks, that it was in 1973 with the 2002 Turbo they had... and have not really had one since this car. (Not meanind turbos in diesels, I am speaking of in gas powered cars)

This is an engine designed to take an everyday usage and not totally focused toward knock out drag racing.

Most BMW engines are made for that. It's the suspension and steering feel which have the BMW "magic" for that driving experience.

Is it me, or there is just absolutely a lot of unecessary hating on this forum. Please all haters just come out and say that the 335i is not a good car, say it will not handle better than your IS350, say it does not have good fuel economy while practically eliminating turbo lag, say it does not have ample seating for 4, tell me this car will not be fun to drive, tell me it will not be a joy around corners, say it is a poorly designed car and don't forget to mention how they stole everything that makes this car great from toyota. Come out and expose your ignorance. And please Will, BMW did not just slap on turbo chargers to get more power to compete with the Lexus, they could have just built a V8 for that. The churned out a great piece of engineering (no turbo lag, look at the mpg rates men, look at the 0-60 times which are probably a lil faster in reality as BMW likes to be humble with performance numbers on their web site), i wouldn't be surprised the least bit if this engine picked up a few awards. This car is goin to sell like crazy, like it or not. Who is BMW copying, well even if they did copy, the made it far better than the source, just like others have copied the most hated iDrive and made it better (right?). An IS or G35 is will not be as fun as a 3 series. And for those who claim BMW stepped up the horsepower on the 335 to compete with the IS, what do you think the folks at Lexus did to improve their IS to make it a better contender against the 3 series, please someone remind me of the old IS performance figures, yes quite a big difference from the new one right? why? to compete with the 3 series, the reigning champ i the segment. So please, competition is competition, and all sides are churning out great products, just do not ignorant comments about cars that have engineered with greatness in mind and in product

I'm wondering if BMW is selling out? First they start making wannabe 3-series cars for the masses (goodbye exclusivity), now they drop their naturally aspirated so-called "heritage" and use turbos.

Lest we forget the NSX is a 3.2L naturally aspirated engine that does the same speed back in 1990, and only rates 260hp.

But hey, it's been a while since BMW accomplished something. Let them have their day.

Not only will the 335i be faster, but sure to handle better and more fun to drive. Can someone please explain to me what huu76 is talking about, is the NSX in the same category as the 335? could it even seat 4 people while delivering the same figures as the 335? and can the NSX cough out the same fuel efficency numbers? eh no. Please make sensible comparisons, and what do u mean by it's been a while since BMW achieved anything, the 3 series has been on Car and Drivers top ten forever, the new V10 has one engine of the year, forget it men, i could go on and on with accolades and awards. Common sense is not so common. It is alright to be passionate about a specific car company, but please read up on other cars before u attempt to make an unintelligent remark concerning great engineering products.

Acceleration is about weight and gearing.

The IS350 is obviously geared towards acceleration because that's how its American customers rate performance.

Try both the 335i and Lexus IS350 on the Autobahn and tell which one has the most intrusive engine noise.

People are getting a little too excited. It is only 1-2 tenths quicker than the Lexus IS. The new Infinity G35 with 306 hp is about 3 tenths slower. What does it mean, all cars with 300 hp get from 0-60 in about 5 seconds.

the real test is between the new infiniti g35, and the bimmer. infiniti actually offers a stick shift with it's 300+ hp engine. i actually just saw it in motor trend today. the infiniti is the japanese competitor that is actually less expensive than the german target. basically they said the bimmer was slightly more refined so it won the comparison.....hmmm...

this match pairs the best v6 in the industry against the best i-6 in the industry. (both tested were sedans)

This is just funny
If the IS350 had a 3.0L engine with a Turbo Bolted on and performed better than the 335i you would see the BMW fans Screaming their heads off about how Lexus cheated.

Now they have a Car with 2 turbos bolted on for good measure with slightly better 0-60 times than the IS350 and they are Celebrating like they have won the World Cup.

of all the performance traits of bimmer that make them the best sport sedand on earth, i definately think 0-60 is the least important. bimmers have great acceleration times off the line, but their able to produce great handling cars with unparalleled steering and suspensions.

huu, comparing to an nsx?

these arguments are getting a little old. The 335i is faster than your Lexus, handles better, and has more prestige. I know that's hard to swallow thinking you had a winner on your hands, but face the truth already. :) Anybody that denys this is a sweet car that will be hard to beat (and I'm not talking 0-60 here) is just in denial.

Here be we go again, resorting to the handling. Plop in a 200cc motor and they'd still say "but it handles like nothing else". Do these ppl really believe they do zigzags all day? Dream on. All Lexus has to do is put in a hybrid "boost", then we'll see what other excuses there are besides handling and "sales are dropping prestige".

You're full of it. You complain about the NSX EPA and yet you're bragging about V10's. Have you checked the M3's EPA, it's ever so crappy. Get a clue.

NXS is different class, but it's also 16 years old. BMW is happy it matches the NSX by using a turbo and almost 2 decades after. Congrats.

huu76, discounting handling just officialy made you an automotive moron. handling is easily as important as any other performance characteristic. if handling is just an "excuse" go get a lexus ES, and maybe throw a big wing on the back to make it look faster. or better yet, do the sight a favor and don't comment on any performance car related articles.

If handling is paramount, why did BMW make a turbo engine to try and go faster? Handling is loser talk.

My original NSX comment was to say Honda already did it a long time ago w/o needing a turbo. I'm sure Porsche has probably done it too.

handling isn't necsarily paramount. but neither is acceleration. many of the greatest collector cars are light and love the corners. but others just roast the tires. a car that can only accelerate is incomplete. a car that can only turn well is incomplete.

favoring one or the other may be regional and personal. sure i don't need handling as much on a flat straight stretch. and i might not need breakneck acceleration if i'm on windy backroads.

when i hear 0-60 times being worn like an ultimate badge, i can only roll my eyes. using it as the primary standard to judge automotive performance is like determining the best athlete by just having a bench-press competition.

acceleration times have been aquired with bigger engines or turbos. many manufacturers have been able to do this. put a v8 in a little car and watch the tires roast. but not many makers have been able to have the handling abilities of the bimmer.

Handling is always thrown out as the be all, end all when BMW loses in everything else. It's the same as saying "It lacks that German feel". Yup, that Mexican made German feeling.

horsepower and acceleration times don't really bring other cars "where no other car can". i don't think that was even the question though. i'm begining to see you probably have never driven a bmw before let alone sat in one. do you even have a driver's liscence?

Go drive a 320i (re-minted 323i). More body roll than you'd expect, no performance to speak of, and the only luxury "token" in the car is the BMW label on the steering wheel. Should the BMW DNA not flow right through the entire lineup? Seems to me the only thing in common between the M3 and 320i is the name.

what does the relationship between the 320i and the m3 have to do with anything? i have no doubt that the 320i is the least impressive of bmw's cars. and i'm sure if lexus offered a 4cyl in their IS, it too would not be very impressive (although japanese altezza had a hot 200 hp. 4 cyl.). i don't see your point in saying that "look at the cheapest bmw, it's not even that good".

i bragged about the handling of my benz til i got my bimmer. the benz handled well, but the bimmer was significantly better. so this comes down to bragging rites? cause not as many brag about handling, that means it's not as important? consider that if these people aren't talking about handling, their probably not very experienced behind the wheel. or their just rednecks that like to do burnouts.
