Toyota owns 25% of the top sellers--not a surprise. They make great cars. Only American trucks hold any impact on this list.

I also wonder if this includes fleet sales.

The Ford F-series, that's not just the F150 right, it includes ALL others, right?
If so, then the numbers don't mean anything. They need to show the F150's numbers only if that's the case.

Impressive Impala sales. Having Oprah and Gayle drive one cross country really paid off.

America is a very odd country...I'm sure it must be the only developed country in the world where 25% of the best selling 20 vehicles belong on a farm.
The 2 I am most surprised by are the Dodge Caravan and Ford Econoline.
The Dodge is a terrible mini-van based on a ten year old technology, and the Ford is just a big van...it's really strange how different the situation is in Europe, it's Golfs, Astras, Corsas, Clios and 3 series that are big sellers, all small (smaller than American ones for sure) cars.

I have Europe's best selling cars for all of 2006.
1: Astra 437,673
2. Renault Clio: 431,595
3. Ford Focus: 418,490
4.Volkswagen Golf: 417,894
5. Fiat Punto: 401,022
6. Ford Fiesta: 353,296
7. Volkswagen Passat: 331,414
8. Peugeot 307: 306,558
9. Volkswagen Polo: 294,762
10. BMW 3-Series: 289,053

Just to say, for those that don't know, the Fiesta, Punto, Clio and Polo are all the same size as a Toyota Yaris, and all of these cars bar the Passat and 3 series are hatchbacks.

No, the Dodge Caravan is based off the 1997 Dodge Caravan, same platform, same engines, same gearbox, just new stow and go. I wasn't sure so I checked the Dodge website, and it looks identical to the Chrysler Grand Voyager we've had in Europe since 1997.

I don't care for the metric system or soccer either. A 20 year old F150 pickup is probably one of the most enjoyable rides ever.

true apperently, the ford focus for example was Europe which became a hit there, but once it hit states a yr later, it was crap. using tht reliable foreign parts from europe became a total mess here. being in a lot of rentals, their interior quality is no match for our current accord.

Great, listening to German nuts like formula1 has been bad enough (and I'm sure the other side can say the same about some Lexus nuts), but now we have a domestic basket case posting nonsense. God help us all.

Go to Autoblog, damicko, they love domestic apologists like yourself.

America is a larger country physically in size. Not only do we need, but we also enjoy cars with more power, towing capacity etc. I can't fathom living in Europe driving a cramped VW Polo or one of the other hundred hatchbacks on sale there.

A Polo really isn't cramped, small boot yes, but it's quicker than many SUVs (as in all versions of the Toyota Land Cruiser), has a higher top speed than many other cars (my 75 hp Lupo can go faster than an Escalade)...why do you need a bigger car to travel further?
Why 9 seat SUVs for 4 people families? Why V8s? Why pick-ups (which are a lot more cramped than a Polo in the back)?
I'm not saying everyone should drive Polos, it's too small for some families, but cars like the Golf and Focus are called "family cars" in Europe, for good reason. Plenty of space, refined, quiet, decent enough performance..nobody needs a bigger car.
Also, how does better acceleration make long journeys easier?
Road size obviously does play a big part in size of cars, as does parking, ie I bet most Americans on this site either have a garage or off-street parking, right? And I bet on the road outside your house, 2 cars can pass eachother going in opposite directions? Not in my area, no off street parking, no garages...going down my road, someone comes the other way, I have to pull over into a space, and if there are none, reverse down the road to find one. In an Escalade that is difficult, as is finding a big enough space.
And if you do all insist on big cars, why no smaller engines?
And Will, you have a 300C, LS430 and Rx330, right? Why the SUV? Would a 5, A6 or E class estate suffice? Or even a 3 series touring? And I know Lexus doesn't offer one, but an LS350? And if you could have diesels, a 300CRD, quicker than the 3.5 V6?
I know America is a big country, but it's about the same size as Europe, and we get around that just fine. Do you often take 1000 mile trips? Do you really "need" more power and towing capacity?
That's also why people choose diesels in Europe, heavily laden smaller cars struggle with petrols, but small diesels have the torque to make comfortable progress.
For example, get a Renault Megane (same size as Golf) with a 1.9 Dci 130 hp engine, 0-60 8.5 seconds, gets 42 US mpg.
Is it slow? No.
Is it big? No.
Is it clever and European? Yes.
And it has only a slightly smaller boot than the Lexus IS, but bigger than the GS450h and LS600h.
And if you need more bootspace, there's an estate version.
Everyone's happy with a small diesel car.
It can also do 130 mph.

Americans do not "need" more powerful and larger cars, considering 85% of the time they drive alone..and then complain about the price of gas with an SUV that gets 16 mpg. In the New England region roads are a lot narrower and wind a lot more (including highways) than the rest of the U.S. to where driving an SUV/truck can become impractical so foreign cars out number American cars and trucks/suv's.

Let's parse the data rather than pontificate our biases, shall we?

- of the top-selling models, 1.84 million Americans decided that FWD cars were acceptable, versus 1.64 million who chose RWD or AWD or 4WD. This supports the notion that the majority of Americans stick to developed roads and non-performance driving.

- of the top-selling models, USA manufacturers sold 1.95 million vehicles; Japanese sold 1.53 million; Korean and European mfrs did not have any top-20 selling vehicle. This indicates how much the exchange rate is hurting European manufacturers.

- of the top-selling models, pickup trucks were by far the best selling body type, with 1.21 million vehicles sold. Coupes and sedans together sold 1.52 million, with all other body types trailing by significant margins. It is unclear from the data, however, whether Americans preferred 2-door or 4-door cars overall.

- The 20 top-selling models were from only 6 manufacturers; Toyota sold 832,000 of them. GM was next with 787,000, followed by Ford with 732,000 and Honda with 640,000. Chrysler and Nissan trailed significantly behind the leaders with 325,000 and 165,000 respectively. Toyota has continued its momentum!

- it is unclear how many of the top 20-selling vehicles use gasoline. Hybrid gasoline/electric models reflected in the data include versions of the Camry, Accord, Civic, Prius, and Escape. Other top-selling models that will receive hybrid options imminently are the Corolla, Altima, Silverado/Sierra. This means 9 of the top 20 selling models in the USA will be available in a hybrid gasoline/electric configuration. Clearly manufacturers are betting on this technology to be an attractive option.

- GM handily won the pickup sales competition when adding the Chevy and GMC pickup sales.
GM - 473,000
Ford - 412,000
Dodge - 215,000
Toyota - 106,000

- Honda's Odyssey, despite glowing reviews by magazines, was outsold by Chrysler's venerable Caravan AND by Ford's ancient workhorse Econoline van. Work vehicles outsell personal vehicles in this category!

- The Honda CRV won the tall wagon (call them "compact utilities" if you must) sales segment over the Escape and RAV4 with 124,000 sales versus the other's 105,000 and 102,000, respectively.

- The Prius was the only top-20 selling model with a hatchback configuration, although 6 other top-selling vehicles offered liftgates or doors to access cargo. The 5 pickup models represented (which accounted for a volume of 35% of the top-selling vehicles sold) of course carry cargo unprotected. The top 8 models of coupes and sedans, which have limited cargo room, represented 44% of the top-selling vehicles by volume. It seems this year's American car buyer typically either hauls people or cargo, but not large quantities of both at the same time in the same vehicle.

Personal interpretations of what makes a superior vehicle notwithstanding, these are what sell in the USA today

hey amazinBimmer the problem with american cars and trucks are the idiots in charge at GM, Ford, and Chrysler. As for Bush I and a lot of america didn"t vote for him and never liked him. Some american think that a heavy duty pickup truck with a 6 liter diesel engine is fuel efficient. If it was a 3 liter diesel engine that would be.
