Top Gear: Chrysler 300C SRT8 vs BMW M5
Top Gear took the Chrysler 300C SRT8 and raced it against a BMW M5 E60. The Chrysler 300C SRT8 is based on an old Mercedes E-Class and has a 6.1 liter V8 engine that produces 425 horsepower. It costs much less than a BMW M5 but can it hold up to the big beast that has 2 more liters? Watch the quarter mile drag race between the Chrysler 300C SRT8 and BMW M5. Read Article

I didn't watch the video, yet, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out which of these two is the better balanced sports sedan.

The Chrysler 300C SRT-8 is a good car, but it is definitely not an M5 killer.

I didn't watch it, but please tell me the M5 won!

300C SRT8 is definitely a cool car, but it's not even in the same league. Its closest competitor would have to be the CTS-V.

M5 = technology + engineering.
300C = cheap american plastic crap with a big engine.
If i put a 6.1 liter HEMI in a Dodge Neon, u think i be king of the road ?

no comparison !!!!!!!!!

Hey, don't be so harsh. The 300C is known to have some great driving dynamics. It just can't touch the M5.

And interestingly, my car is his second-favorite convertible.

By all accounts, I would think he would hate it!

He has eclectic taste...

(The new XK convertible is his favorite- of course, it's British)

Clarkson on driving the Chrysler:"....ever wondered what a cross channel ferry would be like if you gave it a really a big engine"

LOL!! That's gold.

Not even close on the 1/4 mile.....about 4-5 car lengths for the Bavarian Saloon.

On stying alone I would give the 300c SRT-8 a slight lead. The SRT-8 costs 38,700 pounds and the BMW M5 63,495. So obviously the performance is going to be different.

Well, first they reviewed the SRT-8 by itself, then they compared it to the top European sports sedan (currently) to see how it stacks up. Silly to compare it to the Ford GT.

Like Chewy said, Clarkson tested the SRT-8 by itself.

the M5 drag-race was thrown in just for laughs, and Clarkson even stated himself that the test wasn't fair.

Regardless of price, he just wanted to see how America's answer to the super saloon stacked up against Europe's finest.

Remember Top Gear is an automotive-themed entertainment show more than anything, and this video was very entertaining!

Job done then.

utahkid, I know you have accused me of stating the obvious before, so I thought it was about time to return the favour ;)

let's celebrate the american manufacturers finally accepting their roots and using rwd again.

and also celebrate the fire breathing germans for their automotive equivelent of mike tyson circa 1989

Well, the difference is, the M5 has the muscles AND the brains.

Maybe a little too many brains?

...Nah, the new six-speed stick'll fix that.

And I just do really love the bodykit. Understated, classy and yet noticeable- looks great in any color.

Actually, I am european and if I would consider buying an american executive car, 300 would be the first and probably the only one on my list. Its an ok car, its cheap, looks good, has mercedes parts in it and old E class suspention, and that, even though its old, its far from bad.

you know the diesel is quicker than the 3.5 v6, even though it is smaller and has less hp? how weird is that?

Yeah, but the HEMI beats them both!

The 300C (the C is only on the HEMI versions) is quite possibly the best value-for-money in the world right now.

Boy, even though I love the show, I'm beginning to understand that Clarkson hates all American cars. I've heard many accessments of the SRT8 and none of them has been even remotely as brutal as Clarkson's review.

Lots of interesting comments here...but my SRT8 with the GS Motorsports supercharger still costs 20,000 pounds less than the M5 and will handily smoke almost anything with 4 doors. It's odd that Clarkson's opinions are very subjective and not backed up by any real data. While I'll agree the M5 is a wonderful machine, a comparison to the 550i might have been more appropriate given the cost difference. Of course, I'd be happy to see Clarkson do any comparison between the 300 SRT8 and any german or brittish car with a sticker price under $45k.

Bullshit, that's Jeremy Clarkson... Famous for his Anti-American remarks
Throughout Top Gear, Clarkson has made Anti-American remarks, often stereotyping Americans as fat and dull-witted. For example, in September 2006 Clarkson wrote an editorial for The Sun: "Most Americans barely have the brains to walk on their back legs".[38] In addition, when travelling through the U.S. and stopping to fill up with petrol, he said "If you're thinking about coming to America, this is what it's like. You've got your Comfort Inn, you've got your Best Western, you've got your Red Lobster where you eat. Everybody is very fat, everybody is very stupid and everybody is very rude. It's not the Holiday programme, it's the truth!" [39] He has also said on Top Gear when comparing a rural British village with a rural American village that "In rural America, the town would be full of people doing… whatever it is they do. Incest, mostly"...

Well, I'm a happy owner of my second Chrysler 300C HEMI and I will go for my third one now which will be the 300C SRT8... (www.foro300c.com)

There's no other car that is an eyecatcher or a headturner like the 300C... I also ride a SUPRA TARGA TURBO and had a JAGUAR XKR convertible... no way. Both cars do not own the sex-appeal and the pure muscle of a 300C HEMI V8... God Bless

Even in DUBAI, three days ago there took place a huge 300C gathering... That's the place of BENTLEY, ROLLS and Ferraris. Even these petrol-upper-rich guys value the outstanding design of a Chrysler 300C... come and take a look: http://www.foro300c.com/forums/showthread.php?p=737#post737
