I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

I was looking at property in LA, and in the really nice areas (by the beach, pool etc) a 5 bed modern house with all the trimmings was like 1 million pounds! My house is worth that and it's a 1950's semi! Everything is so cheap in America...clothes especially. It's dollars for pounds with A&F and American Apparel.
Why is Britain so expensive?
(Shall we do a Daily Mail and blame the government?)

Oh and never mind once I have 1 million, I'm off as soon as I leave university! (which considering I haven't started yet is a while off)

"I was looking at property in LA, and in the really nice areas (by the beach, pool etc) a 5 bed modern house with all the trimmings was like 1 million pounds!"

What neighborhoods were you looking in? Go to redfin.com and type Beverly Hills. $2 million is really nothing for L.A. (or at least parts of it) - that might get you a 2 bedroom apartment in Beverly Hills. The average price for a real home in Beverly Hills is probably between $10-$15 million- although I don't know that for a fact. Currently the most expensive home for sale in Beverly Hills is $168,000,000

Hell if you want an entry level nice house in Denver and not some suburban piece of crap it will cost you $3 million. These homes are usually in Greenwood Village or Cherry Hills. I want to move to Sunset Drive, but the only home for sale is $20 million and is ugly as ugly gets- a bad imitaton of a tuscan villa.

America is indeed very cheap..

But then again their social security system sucks.. I lived in Belgium and the social system is just fantastic.

Do you American pay value added tax?

They call it sales tax don't they in the States? But it is less than Britain...17.5% :(

Its a great time for Europeans to buy into the US housing market. I would stay away from certain areas, but others are great. NY, LA, Washington, Seattle, San Diego and San Fransico are all solid markets. Some places in Florida may seem tempting but prices will get lower there.

It's funny you should say that, many property magazines have been saying the same things.
Apparently Miami is having a housing boom and is "the" place to buy. San Diego also had a big feature last week, it too has been extensively redeveloped and is now an economic hive of activity.
Solid areas like SF, LA and NY were also recommended, as was much of New England, and skiing areas that could be rented out to seasonal travellers.

I just went on MSN UK and what was one of the articles?
http://money.uk.msn.com/guides/Holiday-Money/article.aspx?cp-documentid=5614918
"The strength of the pound means it’s bonus time for us. With one British pound worth more than two US dollars, the current two-for-one “offer” running for anyone looking for a bargain is too good an opportunity to miss."
