Toyota Canada Reduce Retail Prices on 11 Models
Toyota Canada announced Tuesday it's lowering the the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) on 11 Toyota and Lexus models.
The reductions will range from $1,350 for the RAV4 to $7,900 for the Lexus SC series and will apply regardless of whether shoppers plan to lease, finance or purchase them.

This is an interesting move. I've barely seen an automaker lowering official MSRP. Also, Toyota reported their sales number is much better in Canada than in U.S.; Will Toyota USA follow the same way or keep losing U.S. market?

"Looks like Toyota are going out of business"
Yeah, being the most profitable company automatically means that they are going out of business, makes sense.

You would think with all that money they could design one car that is pleasing to look at.

They already have some, you're just on acid too much of the time to notice.

Its easy to talk about price reductions when unsold 2008 cars are involved as they would normally be reduced for clearance anyway. -- I want to see what prices will be announced for 2009 models.

These aren't discounts....they're changing MSRP. That means it's sticking around.

This is a good move on Toyota's part. Our neighbors up north pay anywhere from $8k more for entry models (civics, golf, focus) to $30k(for Porsche, MB, Jag etc) above what we have to pay here for new vehicles even though their dollar is on par with ours. There's even a lawsuit filed against major manufacturers right now. Lexus was one of the first (along with Porsche) to ease the pain by lowering MSRP's...
Lexus lowered prices as follows last year:
Model/orig MSRP/ new MSRP
ES series / $42,900 / $39,900
IS series (manual) / $36,550 / $31,900
LS series / $92,400 / $85,800
SC series / $93,250 /$86,100
RX series ('09) / NA / $44,350
GX series / $76,600 / $68,500
Looks like Lexus are Porsche are the only ones doing the right thing.

Wow. Holy shit. It's about time! I live in Canada. I hope the other makers do the right thing as well. We are being gorged for cars here in Canada compared to the US.

Toyota the eco brand has become no econo-friendly for those who are in the market. I'm surprised they lowered the Lexus pricing too. It can lure more buyers. Maybe owners of Avalon's could now buy a lower end Lexus!

Well, this article conveniently omitted that fact that Canadian Toyota/Lexus sales are up 8%, and the price drop/adjustments are on their best selling models (except the GX/SC).
Tundra prices remain the same, no change even with slower sales.
The Prius now outperforms the TDI at the same price, no more hybrid premium. Unless you absolutely must drive German to feel better than everyone else, there's no sane reason to go diesel since you get poorer performance for higher priced fuel.
I have been in a Prius, and it looks and feels fine. The only thing that bothered me was the button inplace of a normal transmission stalk.

The Prius feels incredibly cheap.
Grab the door handle (not the moving handle-lever, but the fixed one on the arm-rest) and pull. You can nearly pull the entire door panel off it flexes so much. You should be able to grab/push any panel in a vehicle and not feel like you could dismantle it. German vehicles are good for this. They feel solid.

I don't know what your standards are but the Prius is cheap in my opinion as well. However if GM is helping them build the Prius models then I can see why but then again regardless of who's building proper CG should be implemented.

Some more highlights.
Hybrid sales jumped 75%, Prius jumped 412%
Yaris up 30%
Corolla up 32%
EnnNorak,
Go to www.toyota.ca, the price cuts also include the 2009 Corolla, Matrix, Camry and Camry-hybrid, some of their best selling models. There's no pricing on the 2009 Prius or Yaris yet.

The reality is... Our Canadian dollar has been within cents from par with your US dollar for over four years now, with times ours being worth as much as $1.10 USD per $1 CAD.
Almost every business has tried to make up a reason for their prices remaining the same, even though their dollar is purchasing much more on the market, thus they should reflect the saving in their prices, i.e. American prices if our dollar is on par with the US dollar.. but they don't..
They were originally saying "the stock was purchased a year ago and thus has to reflect the prices at that time", well a year came and went without any price changes.
Next, they have been saying the dollar will fall back to $0.65 and they will not change their prices believing this is a bubble..
There was a huge stir in the canadian media about canadians going over the border, buying a car for ten thousand (or more) dollars less from a US dealer. When the Canadian dealer wouldn't match the US dealers price and the dollars are at par there is something wrong.. they went as far as trying to prevent US dealers along the border from dealing with Canadian customers, saying it would steal revenue from their Canadian counterparts..
The car manufacturers were simply riding out the bubble, Toyota isn't the first to drop prices, Audi was offering 5 grand back cash, Dodge is practically giving them away.. Still I don't believe one dealership is selling the car at par with the US dealers, still holding to the fact the Canadian dollar was, at one point, $0.65 per $1 USD...
At least we now get USD pricing on magazines and books... ;-(

Toyota was the first Manufacturer to lower prices in Canada...not rebates but MSRP. Cash back has always been around. And yes most Toyota's are still more expensive in Canada...but some are the same. Price out a base Corolla or Matrix and the prices are within $100. Some of the larger vehicles are still way out. But that's why they dropped prices again. And don't kid yourself. Canadian dealers were prevented from selling to US customers 6 years ago when the dollar situation was reversed. As for being pissed about the difference...part of it has to do with higher taxes/tariffs. Feel free to buy in the US. But make sure you take the US healthcare system too.

Back when everyone was complaining about getting ripped off in Canada, Toyota said they'd honour the warranties on US cars if you brought them over the border simply because the couldn't stop you.
Toyota just reminded everyone that US cars aren't as weatherstripped and insulated for the winter like Canadian cars.
Atleast all these cars (except the Prius and Yaris) are built in N.A. unliek those Korean Chevys. Who knows, if the trend continues, they might build a new plant for the Prius and Yaris.

The only thing news-worthy is that Toyota is the LAST automaker to adjust the price to adapt to the new Canadian dollar value.
And like all other brands, its still cheaper to buy the same car south of the border.

permanent price drops--not just temporary deals--are a sign of very weak pricing power. not surprising as toyota/lexus sales are down 20%.
