8 million vehicles, the company's largest U.S. recall.

An earlier report said the government has been warning owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about safety problems tied to removable floor mats.

They say the mats could interfere with the vehicle's accelerator and cause a crash.

The Transportation Department says owners should take out the floor mats on the driver's side and not replace them.

Toyota did not immediately comment on the warning.

The consumer alert affects 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.

Why is this not an agent009 story?

I think someone in Toyota's PR department thought it would be an awesome idea to do a recall so the public will think Toyota is on top of their game, but it's not going to work because the public already know it's not Toyota's fault, the blame rests solely on the idiot cop who was beating the crap out of the Lexus loaner car, did not use any defensive driving tactics and ends up killing his whole family and costing tax payers thousands to clean up the mess. Not only that, other motorists lost time and money by getting stuck in traffic jam due to this recklessness. Toyota should sue the city for poor training of it's officers as this ruins their name.

Toyota will soon find that this stupid publicity stunt will backfire and cost them hundreds of millions as it insults their customers intelligence, wastes their time and gas to go to the dealers to replace a floor mat.

Remember kids, floor mats don't mash the gas pedal by themselves, if anything they prevent gas pedal from being pushed deeper.

Badgewhore- Actually this was even too obvious for me.

As soon as I learned of it Inspirion7 sent it in. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

Actually this one is a bit crazy, I have seen the mats in question and I can see why there is a problem. It was pretty obvious they could have been designed better.

With that being said I am still wondering just how the latest fatal accident went down involving a trained peace officer (blamed on the mats). It seems there were several ways to abort the issue but none worked. It is sad it came to this.

The carpet got blame because they just believed whatever the wife was saying when she was on the phone. During that 5 minutes on the phone, there's got to be something else said that we weren't allowed to hear. The public got fooled, Toyota got scared and decided to do a recall. There is no believable scientific explaination to blame the carpet. I could be wrong, but this is like that fat chick who sued Mcdonald for her being fat.

There would not be a recall if there wasn't something wrong. Something is wrong. Some thing has failed. Houston we have a problem. Webster's definition of recall is" to bring back or return." It didn't say anything about being forced.

Inspiron is right. Something did fail. The dealer failed to tell someone how to put their mats in right. OR The guest failed to put the mats in right. OR The clean up guy didn't re-install the mats right. OR The dealer installed the wrong mats......nothing is wrong with the design....just the application.

This is the same as if someone put a canoe on top of their roof rack and didn't attach it. If you read the actual recall....when the car gets to the dealer....they make sure you don't have the mat installed incorrectly....then send you back down the road.

in 2007, they launched another program, but not recall, telling people to bring their cars in if they were worried about the floor mat getting caught, or have experienced it themselves. that happened after a few people on the street noted the accelerator sticking, but it could be easily pulled back. I guess they should have just done the recall in the first place.

though you would think that starting with the 2008 models, they would have incorporated the new design into the cars

The point over all is, when you go from a pristine record of not having recalls and your competition is heaving from all the money to fix problems and public opinion, to a current image of questionable, if not completely negligible actions, consumers don't give a stick about if Toyota had a recall they issued, they just want quality. To you the loyal purchaser its cool, to someone new to the game, this doesn't look like crap.

I'm posting this as to not be accused of being a hater. This is from the NHTSA. Take it up with them.

NHTSA said it had received reports of 102 incidents in which the accelerator may have become stuck on the Toyota vehicles involved. It was unclear how many led to crashes but the inquiry was prompted by a highspeed crash in August in California of a Lexus barreling out of control. As the vehicle hit speeds exceeding 120 mph, family members made a frantic 911 call and said the accelerator was stuck and they couldn't stop the vehicle.

"This is an urgent matter," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "For everyone's sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration.

"Toyota's previously largest U.S. recall was about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 to fix a steering issue. The company declined to say how many complaints it had received about the accelerator issue.

In September 2007, Toyota recalled an accessory all-weather floor mat sold for use in some 2007 and 2008 model year Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Camry vehicles because of similar problems.

yes, we have spoken about that case many times on this site. While it may have been true that the mat caused the acelerator to stick, it is unclear why the family still had time to call 911 instead of putting the car to neutral, dislodging the mat, pressing on the brake, pressing on the hand brake, turning off the engine. the driver was a CHP officer too

What a joke. So much for the NHTSA being independent. They found out what the problem was over two years ago (people putting the original mats in nunderneath so the all weather can't secure properly).

The NHTSA doesn't even have a solution after knowing about this for two years. There suggestion was to remove the mat (and not even bother putting the original one back in or mandating Toyota replace them).

While that accident in San Diego with the CHP officer and his family was terrible, what is to prevent someone from simply switching off the ignition of the mat gets stuck? Doesn't solve the problem with the mats, but I don't understand why that cop didn't do it.

The question should be "why is the cop mashing the gas pedal and not telling his freaked out wife?" Floor mats don't have their own power source or any mechanical motors/arms/legs to mash the pedal on their own. They don't even have a CPU or eyes or sensors to know where the pedal is or how much pressure needed to reach 120mpg and beyond.

I think the GOP paid this cop to sacrifice himself and his family to destroy Toyota so GM can get an upper hand since there's no way we'll ever gonna get our bailout money back because people still ain't buying vehicles build by the new and improved GM. Tarnishing the competition is the only way. Maybe EL34 is right, this is all Obamas fault.

I'm sure this is the last thing Toyota needs. I remember back in the 1980's Toyota was an up and coming car company, striving to overtake GM who at the time, sold millions of vehicles every year, compared to Toyota's 100-200k per year volume.

Now Toyota has started to have the same dink, dink problems GM was infamous for.

That shyt don't effect Toyota/Honda, only domestics and euros. But I will admit, Toyota has gone cheap to make more money per vehicle. For example, all Rav4s, Corollas, Yaris, Matrix, Highlanders, uses cheap hard plastics for the interior and sound deadening materials is used sparingly.

Must be upset Toyota's biggest recall isn't even a real recall. Let's start recalling seatbelts because some generation duh moron decides to wear her seatbelt underneath her shoulder instead of above and claim that it was the manufacturers fault.

I know, lets buy tires from the dealership and only use one lugnut to fasten them on, then we can have a tire recall too.

There's a difference between exploding gas tanks, faulty tires and air bags that don't work and people who can't follow common sense (the first 3 are within a companies power to control, the latter isn't). If the all weather mats use the same hook fasteners as the standard mats, then don't you think it might NOT be a good idea to cover up the fasteners?

This recall is pure politics which explains the NHTSA's limp dick reasoning for the recall, basically not giving proof why the recall is happening besides "better not use the floormats" because some the stupidity of a few.

Think I'll go drive backwards at 50km/h and blame Jeep for not putting a speed limiter in reverse gear.

A recall is a recall, just because it wasn't mandated by a government agency doesn't mean that it isn't a recall. Toyota is still spending untold sums of money to fix a problem that has significantly reduced the publics perception of them.

in his defense, there is no key in the ES since it is push button start. What he needed to do was hold the push button start for 3 seconds which shuts down the engine

The fact that its a voluntary recall does not make it any better than a mandatory recall... It just makes Toyota a little more responsible (morally speaking) than a company who neglects the claims and wait until it escalates to a mandatory recall...

Besides, it does not matter if its floor mats, engines, or gas tanks. If it can cause death, it's defective.

But is user error/foolishness a true recall? It did have its intended effect of downgrading Toyota's image, but what if someone speeds at 155km/h and kills themselves, is the company at fault becuase they didn't put a lower speed limiter eventhough the gov't doesn't mandate it?

Not arguing its not a recall (since Toyota did call them back, to do what, I don't know) but its a BS recall having nothing to do with safety standards and all about helping the big 2.5 out.
The problem with the valve leaking onto the brakes and possibly freezing up, that's a true recall because it could be proven that Toyota's design was flawed. Obvious problem, an obvious solution was mandated/provided.
What if the NHTSA said instead of relocating the valve, you just not use your brakes. Thats' what they're saying with the floormats which means they don't even believe their own story.

Just another lump Toyota has to take for being #1.

Simply because Toyota could've looked at the overwhelming amount of people who had no issue with them whatsoever (8 million...out of 8 million)and done nothing. The problem is that those 112 could form a class-action lawsuit against one of the wealthiest car manufacturers in the world, and hit them for more than the mat replacement cost.

Again, this goes back to 2004 and literally only 112 incidents so far, yet the other 8 million had none whatsoever. There is a huge difference between a mandatory recall and a voluntary one, specifically that a mandatory one is immediate and costly upfront.

...yet you also realize that Toyota's size (like VW) allows it to share parts which further expands a recall? Toyota has been very profitable BECAUSE it has the luxury of sharing parts, engines and platforms all the way up to Lexus...which make a recall larger in scope than say, Subaru.

People seem stoked to see Toyota fall from grace, it's not like they duped the public with an inferior product at an inflated price, the awards and superior build quality state otherwise. Their growth was just too aggressive, its not like they are big and now ignoring their customers.

It states right on the All Weather Mats to remove the Carpeted mats first. And there is a reason there are safety hook installed....

to use the correct term. This is called a "Campaign" that is the term auto manufacturers use when it is a non government mandated recall.

I dont think there really is much to say here, Toyo/Lex should have had their business together. This is a pretty simple matter, it could have been addressed in a much more business friendly way.

In their defense its pretty hard to control a retard, i guess some people really dont understand how things work, and when things look wrong. Survival of the fittest meets floor matts.

I am sure when this guy's car was out of control due to the excessive speed that holding the ignition button down for 3 seconds came to mind, not. When you are involved in a hihg speed crash, panic usually takes over. Plus the fact his kids were most likely screaming & his wife was hysterical. All he can think about is trying to keep the car straight & avoiding the cliff. I am sure he tried to slow the car down. That is alot of distraction. If he was in the car by himself, would he have faired better? Most likely...

With this being said, the floor mats are obviously a potential problem, since he is not the only person to have experienced it. It is good that Toyota is addressing this, but it is bad for their image. Safety

There is no way the carpet can be blame. Nobody has bothered to show any proof beyond a reaonsable doubt that it is the carpets that mash the throttle by themselves. Everyone is just TO QUICK TO POINT FINGERS. One would like to think with the internet nowadays, people be a bit a smarter.

Slightly over a 100 people complained about the carpet compared to 3.8 vehicles being recalled and only one dumb enough to crash? This is super low or nonexistance, the GT-R tranny has a higher ratio.

It shouldn't matter wether it's hand built or not, it's a production car. The GT-R just has a higher percent of tranny failure. For Toyota, it is 100 out of 3.8 million especially when only one crashed and died, I'd be perfectly happy with such a ratio, but I guess Toyota is really showing everyone they are relentlessly in pursuit of perfection.

I'm still waiting for someone to show some proof that it was the carpets that did this on their own and not driver error.

Well it isnt carpet. it is thick all weather mats. Even then it is those mats being installed over the top of the standard carpet mats. The clip system isnt meant for 2 sets of mats, yet most people just toss them in on top.

It isnt a hard concept. And if you read it doesnt say people are in grave danger, it says only use one set of mats.

I am all for Toyota bashing but seriously this is a simple thing that could, and i am sure has, happened in the past to many other vehicles outside of the Toyota realm.

OK my car has an factory all weather car mat that doesn't get stuck under the accelerator pedal; and my all weather car mat has no special clips or hooks. If the manufacturer of my car can do this why can't toyota.

Plus how does toyota/NHTSA know it is the car mats!

Federal investigators said of the 102 accidents caused by stuck gas pedals on Toyota vehicles, there are four possible causes involving the floor mats: The mats are too long or too thick, they weren't properly secured, the gas pedal design is flawed or the floor geometry is defective.

The wide array of causes presents a challenge to Toyota engineers who are trying to come up with a way to fix the problem that is leading to a recall of 3.8 million vehicles, including the Camry, the top-selling car in the U.S.

"We've evaluated a number of different years, makes and models of Toyota and don't believe that there is a one-size-fits-all answer as to why these incidents are occurring," said National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spokesman Rae Tyson on Tuesday. "I think Toyota is going to have a challenge on its hands to come up with a remedy that is going to address the problem."

Toyota spokesman John Hanson acknowledged the problem is more complex than vehicle floor mats alone, but involves the way the floor mat interacts with other parts of the vehicle.

"Other factors may be coming into play here," he said. "That's why we feel that probably the remedy could be different from vehicle to vehicle."

The NHTSA probably gave into the UAW but didn't want to piss off Toyota since they both know the recall is BS, hence the NHTSA letting Toyota do a voluntary recall (which will result in no work whatsoever) rather than announcing a mandatory recall over a BS issue.

"I think Toyota is going to have a challenge on its hands to come up with a remedy that is going to address the problem."

NHTSA has nothing to prove it is a design defect. Toyota is going to have a hard time remedying this issue because it doesn't exist. The NHTSA's first retorical recall. No answer is right becuase no answer is required.

Keep saying that it's not a real recall and maybe it'll just go away?

Not sure that's the best way to cope with harsh realities of life, buddy. But then I'd supposed that's the expected response of someone who excessively complains, exaggerates, make up numbers, and sidetracks at times just to make his case more compelling.

But of course there is. The right course of action will be to execute this massive recall in the most efficient and cost effective way. Toyota will need to minimize damages to its image and continue to minimize its hundreds of millions of dollars in operating loss globally every month.
