Toyota Overtakes Ford For Number Two Spot in 2007 Is GM Next?

Even with a tough economic year hindering Toyota's progress in the US market, it has proved to be even tougher for Ford last year.

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. took over Ford Motor Co. in U.S. sales, moving the Detroit automaker to the No.3 spot..

Toyota sold 61,962 more cars and light trucks than Ford in 2007, according to reported sales figures.

Next year will be different for ford i believe. The new sync system will sell cars by itself. I dont know if it will be enough to knock off Toyota, but it will help some.

In my opinion, Sync is a dumb gimmick. Alan Mulally probably made a phone call to Bill Gates and asked him to help save the Ford brand. Bill Gates felt guilty because he is a fellow head of an American company and lent some cool technology. Sync will not sell a car by itself.

I dont see anything in Ford's future to stop their descent. Toyota will remain at #2 for a while. With continued sales of the Tundra, updates to the Corolla/Matrix, and a rumored new Crossover, Toyota should do fine this year.

Toyota division is also #1 in brands for the year, overtaking Chevy. I'm not sure if that can hold with the new Malibu, although the Impala sales may fall due to the Malibu,so who knows.

True. Toyota is number one in US slightly ahead of Chevy.

1970toyotamarc the corolla and matrix are definite duds for sure! And i think u r forgetting that once the new f-150 is released the tundra will be crushed. Anyway the f-150 is still crushing it in sales even though they are at an all time low!

You definition of a dud?
You may want to check the sales of the corolla before you make claims like that. Numbers don't lie. The styling may suck (although that is extremely subjective), but you have to look at volume, which I would say completely negates your statement.

Also, look at the time the f-150 has been around vs. the time the Tundra has been around (and been relatively decent)

i guess you're trying to live the "american dream"...Ford just gave up it's two biggest assets to TaTa motors. FoMoCo needs another vehicle other than the mustang or f150 that will attract buyers. GM has the malibu/cts/silverado/corvettes/etc

pickups on a whole will lose out big time next year...it won't sell as it usually does. i read somehwere in a report that pick-ups rite now are taking twice as long to sell. the avg is about 60 days from the time it leaves the plant.

smart move by toyota to scale down production of the tundra, even after a great year for it. toyota knows strategics, and putting the effort into more vehicles like the corolla/matrix/prius/yaris/etc will only better them as the leading car maker their setting out to be.

I've seen the next F-150. Nothing to fear there. It's be at the NAIAS in 2 weeks.
No replacement for the Tired Tritons yet, so don't expect sales to spike a great deal.
A new gas engine isn't expect for another 2 years. The 2009 Ram will be a bigger factor in '08!
Good job, Ford!
