Toyota Prepares Quest for NASCAR Glory
After years of expanding its presence in the United States and beyond, Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. recently issued a 2007 forecast that would make it first in global sales, ahead of General Motors Corp.

And now, Toyota is about to begin competing with its American counterparts on yet another level: NASCAR's premier circuit, the Nextel Cup.

Toyota teams have been testing their Camrys here this month at Daytona International Speedway, where they are inspiring anticipation and angst as the Nextel Cup season approaches. Toyota will be the first foreign brand to compete in stock-car racing's top series since Jaguar in the 1950s.

I wonder how many days Toyota would take before it dominates NASCAR. The Tundra kicked the collective butts of Ford and GM in the Craftsman truck series without even trying.

Based on Toyota's experience in F1, it may take longer than you would think.

TruenoAE86:

F1 is far more advanced than Nascar and the players in F1 have far more knowledge than Toyota in Aerodynamics and Engine technology in what F1 is concerned.

Competition is what scares Europe the most. Competing means you actually have to produce the goods, not just brag about things you did way back.

Angry rednecks? I don't know. A lot of them are from states that have Toyota plants in them.

What the hell does Europe have to do with NASCRAP or the Big 3?

Toyota might do well in NASCRAP but they have failed in F1. Them Europian teams like Renault have been spanking Toyota's behind like a little baby's. How about that for competition. And forget, Toyota is the one spending the most money in F1, makes the whole thing even funnier, foo.

And BTW, it is lame to say stuff like "Toyota doesn't belong in NASCRAP because they ain't domestic" it's like saying that foreign born players can't play in the NBA.

Chewy,
BMW beat Toyota by 1 whole point last year in F1. Is that what 100 years of heritage is worth? We know, next yaer BMW will be in its first year, yet again, as it renames its team BMW-Always or something stupid.

Read the crap up above my post, I can tell those knocking Toyota for entering Nascar are the ones who also look down on NASCAR.

Simply shots at Toyota, not even trying to elevate American brands. Die-hard NASCAR ppl would claim Toyota doesn't have the goods to compete.

The article could've been about Toyota donating a millio bucks to a hospital and they'd say "Toyota sucks".

Fool.

The more Toyota competes, the more legitimacy they get in auto-racing.

5 years of outspending every F1 team have brought Toyota nothing.

All this negative talk about Toyota...I've said it before, arrogance and underestimating the competition has lead to the downfall of many American businesses. Just like when Toyota first entered the American market, same talk. It amazes me to still hear people laughing at Toyota. Kind of ironic, since it is these people that we should be laughing at.

I don't think even with Toyota entering nascar will make me watch. Just wished they went WRC instead. At least that would be interesting.

all the more remarkable, considering toyota had to forego there state-of-the-art DOHC motors and start from scratch with old style pushrod engines and carburetors to compete! showing once again, it can beat the sluggard domestics at their own game.

i'm not a nascar fan. do they gotta use old pushrods there too?

Gogo,
Better pout and stamp your feet a little harder.

Reread your commment.
BMW has 100yrs (maybe 80) of racing experience (supposedly it means something if you ask BMW fans) yet it barely beat Toyota. Your comment about Lexus only being around 20yrs and beating Toyota is even funnier (and worse if you're BMW).
In either case, BMW should win easily, but they didn't.

A better example would have been MB-McLaren beating Honda if you use the heritage arguement. Then again, Honda easily beat BMW.

Anyway, I doubt your peanut brain even tried to think before it replied.

Too funny.

the bmw logo is a reminder of their heritage building aircraft engines, but they haven't MADE any since wwII.

RR built aero engines too. but after switching to jet engines, their car engine designs stagnated, and at the end they were just dumping pushrod gm V8s under the classic Rollers.

bmw's bike engines were old pushrods all the time honda evolved from tw0-stroke and ohv single cylinder engines, thru twins, 4- and 6-cyl dohc types.

now HONDA is making JET engines. while still designing and building some of the world's most advanced ICEs.

NO other engine maker is as varied, advanced and flexible as Honda.

toyota is close by, but just in auto production and racing engines.

Honda is #1. Toyota #2. everyone else struggles for just #3 position.

yeah, but what's SAAB done for us lately?

when did they last build a jet engine? or ANY engine with more than 6 (or just 4?) cylinders?
