Toyota Prius Ad TV Gets Axed For Exaggerating CO2 benefits!
The Prius TV commercial, created by Saatchi & Saatchi Japan, claimed "what if all cars were like the Prius, with its hybrid synergy drive technology, it emits up to one tonne less CO2 per year" On-screen text stated "1 tonne of CO2 less than an equivalent family vehicle with a diesel engine. Average calculated on 20,000km a year. Toyota Prius: CO2 emissions: 104g/km".

The problem was that, according to ASA’s investigations, the chart used by Toyota to make the calculations held data on petrol and diesel cars as opposed to merely diesel. Moreover, while the average annual distance driven by private cars in the US was 20,000km, the average for the UK was 13,440km.

All this hype on hybrid...... Folks, please give the following link a quick read. I feel sorry for these panic-attacked Prius owners.

I'm not going to bother to go through the hassle of copy and pasting that link to look at that, for I can tell it is the same rehashed forum of people posting stories whining about how their batteries mysteriously died on them because of improper care. This issue has already been addressed.

Don't get me wrong. I like Toyota and Lexus cars. I've actually owned a Lexus before, and I loved it. But this hybrid thing is getting way out of hand.

Economically, just do the math, the gas money that you save won't off-set the extra money that you pay for the hybrid system. Environmentally, it doesn't help with emission if you do a lot of freeway driving. Its effectiveness is only limited to stop and go traffic. On the other hand, you have to realise that it requires more resources to build a hybrid car than a regular car. It also requires resources to recycle all those dead batteries in the future. One last thing, how much will it cost the owners to replace the dead batteries when the warranty's over?

To me, a clean diesel engine makes a lot more sense. If you're concerned about the environment, there's bio-diesel. Hybrid is more a marketing hype than anything else.

Yeah and I don't see this US TV ad running much anymore either:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix2b-Jd7L64

Save $13500 over 5 years?!!!! If this were truly the case, wouldn't everyone own a Prius. It defies common sense, is not respectful of the intelligence of the American public, and is simply a lie.

If I recall correctly, this was caused by a software problem.

The UK has a real hard on for Toyota. Maybe they're feeling a little jealous the US may be favouring Japan more?

toyota is a great marketing company

it is good to see the lies of hybrids get busted once and a while
the Prius 2 is going to be 90mpg. The car will be a plug in car/ the only problem is you plug it in to get the mpg/ plug = dirty coal and high power bills but great sales

You've been getting lied to by automakers for the longest time...making suckers think they need 500 HP sedans and 8 passenger SUVs "just in case."

The only difference is people like yourselves have such a hard-on for anti-Toyota (who knows why and who really cares) that you're too blind to see the benefits of the technology they and only they have this far developed.

I suppose envy, jealousy, and nationalistic fascism come in all shapes and sizes.

I really don't care, regardless Toyota and Lexus have both had adverts banned...tells me they're trying to brainwash Lexus fanboys further.

SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW????

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the Toyota/Lexus people.....
