Exactly. If we look at the numbers we notice that the sales for the ENTIRE Lexus line dropped significantly which shows that the majority of Lexus buyers(former Toyota owners) are not people with money. On the other hand we can see that true luxury brands like Mercedes or BMW are not affected as much by the economic conditions since their buyers are mostly upper class.
Lexus WILL go down, there is no doubt about that. With no heritage and no appeal to either the car enthusiast or the rich, this brand has no chance of surviving.

"With no heritage and no appeal to either the car enthusiast or the rich, this brand has no chance of surviving."

That is really an ignorant statement, Star.

Lexus was one of the most successful launches in automotive history, has one of the strongest brand images in the business and enjoys one of the highest satisfied owner bases around.

I'm not a big fan of Lexus (or Toyota for that matter) but they are excellent cars. Just not for everyone.

I don't think I would call Lexus dead yet. But part of this drop in sales is the fact that their customers are more affected by the economy than some of the others. Less resources maybe or simply more cautious.

Strongest brand image? Where is your proof????? I can claim the same thing about KIA but that doesn't make it true.
Satisfied owners? Well, apparently the satisfied Lexus owners don't have enough cash to keep buying expensive cars.

The huge drop in sales is likely due to their aged products. They take way to long in the product redesign process. Most of their cars are out dated and need to be redesigned immediately.

Hmm, you may consider MB as luxury brand, but BMW is not considered as real luxury in Europe. Also, the reason of poor Lexus sales is not lack any luxury but lack of performance and style.

a friend of mine traded in a lexus is250 for a toyota Yaris!! imagine that. his reason whas 'he was getting hit on both ends' - payments were up and fuel cost were burning him.

the fact is, Lexus buyers a very discerning and given Lexus' current lineup which lacks diesel (or more fuel efficient)variants, these buyers are going to punish them. i'm not sure how audi, bmw and mercedes are doing but i remember reading that the current c-class was selling real hot and with sales mostly driven by the diesel cars.

I love cars as much as you guys, but if you're going to split hairs between Lexus buyers and MB, BMW etc...

ALL the people who buy these cars are wasting discretionary income to pamper themselves or show up their neighbors. The people to hold up are the ones who buy something tasteful and USED, and save money for something more important, like kids' education.

MichaelTaylor isn't old enough to drive, but his Mom drives a '03 Focus with a front fender painted a different color from the rest of the car.

When he gets older he knows he won't be able to afford a Lexus, however his uncle has '78 Corolla that MichaelTaylor has already ordered Lexus badges for in a hope that it just might fool people into thinking he is driving a Lexus.

lexus is also NOT as much a poseur brand as the ones who offer SIX=cylinder versions of their top model. every LS you see, YOU KNOW has a big v8 under the hood.

every OTHER lexus also has a v6 as a minimum, NO miserly 4-bangers under poseur sheetmetal. (except for the is200 in europe, where so many poseur pennypinchers live.)

would you say the same thing to those in SE asia and certain parts of asia as well? if you order anything past a V6 engine in hong kong, malaysia, singapore, etc, you'll be slapped with higher taxes. thats why MB offers a v6 in their s-class as well as a 4 cyl in the e and c class to cater the needs of those needing to be chauffered. and with lexus only offering few V6s, V8s and one I4, they'll have a hard time making sales there, as MB rules the luxury scene over there.

you cannot compare one country to another based on the popularity of lexus.

bottom line: the FACT still remains, that EVERY LS has a powerful v8 under the hood. which cannot be said for a 7 or S.

hence, the owner/driver of an LS gets MORE RESPECT, without question. people seeing a german luxury car will be initially impressed too, but in their minds, they will ask "is it a v8 or a Six? gas or diesel?"

those questions NEVER get asked about the LS.

sure, lexus may not sell as many cars as a result. which actually ADDS TO the EXCLUSIVITY and PRESTIGE of the favored few who can afford an LS. in any and all markets.

to only a slightly lesser degree, the same applies to all the other lexus models: NO 4-bangers.

Big difference between Toyota/Lexus vs BMW.
Toyota/Lexus has yet to offer low financing (still 8% or more) while BMW is offering 2% and 1% deals.

If not for the economy 1-series, BMW's sales would've been down 25%. I do notice that BMW used sales are doing quite well. What does that tell you about new money? (make that lack of).

The LS still outsells the 7.
High finance rate IS/ES sales still equalled the discounted 3series.

A new RX is on the horizon, so expect to see sales climb again, just like with the new LX570.

The real news is with their bottom lines. Lexus has no major new models for this year and their total net profit will probably be down a little. BMW has been releasing new models left, right and centre and their net profit is down 18%.

Sort of funny that the Camry-hybrid outsold the 1-series 2to1 when they're nearly the same price and I doubt you'll be able to get a deal on the hybrid.

btw, what's the deal with the X6? There's a 20,000 alotment for N.A. and they only sold 623? Doesn't sound like they're sold out to me.

Well... I think it is actually quite obvious what is happening here! Luxury brands are bound to be more sensitive to changes in the economy because they are - well... Luxury items! This is not only a problem for Lexus! Look at recent sales numbers for BMW... They fall even more! No numbers for Audi yet, but I have a sneaking suspicion they will have lost a little as well! When people have less money in their hands, and the prices on food, gasoline and other commodities sky rocket, they start thinking "Where can I save a little" and I think 95% of people will start with their car! Instead of changing every two to three years, they might hold on to it for a few years extra. Or they might go Camry instead of ES.
The only brand which doesn't really loose anything of the big luxury marks is Mercedes, and I guess that is because they got a good hold on the really rich people who isn't affected as much by the receding economy.

So lets all stop bashing Toyota and Lexus for loosing some sales... BMW is doing the exact same thing!

Exactly. Americans have been living beyond their means since the Reagan era, and the bill is coming due.

Leases and long term loans have encouraged people to buy more car than they can afford.

I would think all "luxury brands" are in a bit of trouble for the next few years, as econmics, national security concerns, and global warming issues dim world wide enthusiasm for big displacement engines of any configuration.
