Toyota Tundra Hybrid by 2010!
TundraHeadquarters has come to the conclusion that a Tundra Hybrid will be available in 2009 as a 2010 model. Early estimates are that the truck will have 400hp, unlimited torque, and get 20mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway, all without compromising Tundra's class leading towing and payload ratings. 400hp and 20mpg? I don't really think that's possible in a vehicle the size of the Tundra.
And why would it's highway mpg be so good? Hybrids aren't good on highways...

that's a myth. Hybrids are great on highways, it's just that their urban mileage is so much better than cmpetitors' urban mileage. My Prius gets better highway mpg than city mpg (over 50mpg). My city mpg never meets EPA (old) estimates, but my highway mpg always does.

Today, the word "hybrid" sounds like a hideous man-eating plant.

Will the Hybrid version look any better? I don't care if it's getting 35mpg if it looks like the current model.

I'm more interested about them saying the new batteries are ready to go.

Considering electric motors in forklifts and trains have enough torque as it is, I wonder if it'd make more sense to put in a V6 for highway driving and to give added boost when towing.

Close to 25mpg is thinkable as I doubt the 5.7L Tundra is any heavier than the LS600hL, and it can get 20mpg real world.

I don't know how heavy the Tundra is (I'd check the Toyota website, but too lazy right now), but I think it's probably more than the LS600hL's 5,000lbs. I would be very, very surprised if a Tundra Hybrid got over 20mpg.

The good thing about hybrids is that they have lots and lots of headroom available
1) Batteries - Lithium Ion for the next genration
2) Higher speed motors - that can sustain higher rpms for a longer time.
3) Improved transmission
4) Capacitors to give that oomph

Pretty much the tipping point where hybrids are better then gasline cars in every single way is about 5 - 10 yrs out :)

No, they're not, because it depends on what you want in a car. Hybrids aren't performance cars, and they're silent. I want a car with a sweet-sounding engine and great handling; I'll leave the better mileage to my wife, as she's more conscious of these things. However, I do recycle anything I can, I never leave the water on as I'm shaving or brushing, etc.

30 years from now we'll look at gas powered cars in museums and wonder-" man those people! So THAT'S how they lived (and drove)!" Wonder if there's going to be a world too.

an additional 5 -7mpg plus the price of battery replacement in 5-7 years or devaluation of vehicle at trade in time because of OE battery still in vehicle equals , not worth it
