Toyota Tundra and Sequoia to get new clean diesel V8s
According to InisideLine, Toyota is working on a family of clean diesel V8 engines for its Tundra pickup and Sequoia SUV. A 4.5 liter unit is expected to enter production and hit the market for the 2010 model year of both vehicles. Toyota will also offer a new version of its existing 4.7 liter V8 E85 ethanol engine as well.

Sources said that Toyota is working on at least two variants of the clean diesel V8 including the 4.5 liter unit and a larger 7.0 liter V8. The 7.0 liter V8 diesel will be fitted in the heavy-duty edition of the Tundra which is expected to...

Toyota has backed off their commitment to create a Tundra hybrid, at least not until 2020 or so. However, a diesel could be a good way to get 20-25mpg without sacrificing any power. The bottom line is that Toyota, like all automakers, is going to have to figure out how to get truck fuel economy up if they want to meet the mandated MPG requirements.

Hybrid truck technology isn't terribly effective - take a look at the hybrid Tahoe. That's not a slam on Chevy, it's just reality. Diesel seems to be a better way to improve fuel economy. Perhaps when the next evolution of Li-Ion batteries come out (5 years or so).

Yea, the Tundra coming out with a deisel with no plans for a hybrid until 2020 that sure will sting Toyota fans ego's.

GM will beat them to the punch with the new Cadillac Esclade hybrid and Gmc hybrid, and Chevey Tahoe hybrid that are coming out in 2009 this fall I think.

This diesel is 10 years too late! There are no worthy hybrids systems that you can buy today that I would like to see on this truck, although PML as far as I know has the most innovative hybrid systems to date. I think a hybrid PML system on this truck would be the answer. And if you are wondering the electrical motors are way more powerful and 20 X more fuel efficient.Google there site.

I do wonder how this (4.5L version)will compare with Ford and GM's half ton V8 diesels. Also Toyota will have a TOUGH fight to pull heavy duty sales from Dodge, Ford, and GM given that these customers can be QUITE brand loyal, and not necessarily to the manufacturer but to the engine line, Cummins vs Duramax.

I agree - the HD segment is even more brand loyal than the LD segment. However, Toyota has a lot of fans. I think they *could* conquer some HD domestic truck sales, but I wonder about the logic of offering an HD truck in the current climate. Truck sales are only going to decline from this point forward, and with diesel versions of half-ton trucks performing so well, it's tough to make a case for HD trucks for most users. Don't get me wrong - they're always be an HD market - I just don't know if it will be big enough to accommodate HD offerings from 4 manufacturers. At least not very profitably.

Those cummins and duramax diesels are excellent engines! I don't see how toyota could match these in terms of durability! There are many cummins engines out there with 2 Million Miles on them!

Yeah, it's not like this is a site for folks to share their thoughts and opinions on articles that are posted here or anything.

Have you seen the price of diesel fuel? It's about $5/gallon. And these diesel engines won't even be out until 2010, who knows how much it will be by then? Not the smartest move from Toyota.

Asia has been using Toyota diesels since 1980s. They are very durable and very reliable and most of important all, easy to fix. The diesel engine from the 80 and 100 series, the 1hd-t with a 4.2 liter turbo is the best landcruiser diesel engine so far. The new 4.5 is a twin turbo V8 which has yet to prove itself. The new V8 turbo diesel is currently being sold here in Asia.
