Toyota Unveils New, Japanese Corolla at Tokyo Mega-Dealership
Nihon Car and Bike covered Toyota's unveiling of its new, JDM Corolla AXIO Sedan and Fielder Wagon -- the 10th generation of Corolla since 1966. No, there isn't some obscure car show you missed, the unveiling took place at ToMoCo's MegaWeb showroom in Tokyo, reportedly the largest car showroom in the world. As expected, the Japan-only version is highly spec'ed, with gadgets culled from the company's luxury models, like elements of the Pre-Crash System (Lexus LS-460), radar-guided cruise control an intelligent Parking Assist. No word on the SUPER HATCHBACK POTENTIAL model that's been rumored.

It looks like a cross between a 2000 Honda Accord and a 2006 Ford Fusion.
I guess Toyota are leading the way with exciting new styling.

I take it you haven't seen what Toyota has been releasing year after year for the past SEVERAL years in their Japanese market, therefore not seeing its strong, established family resemblence; hence, the ignorant comment.

Looks just as boring as ever...
They're gonna have to come up with something much better for the US market if they want to compare favorably with the Civic, Rabbit, Mazda3, etc.

Actually, the Corolla is the world's best-selling car in history.
But that, by no means, means that it's all been the same car. The Corolla nameplate has been put on many variations of different platforms internationally.
The last-generation US Corolla didn't sell as well as the US Civic.
And why do sales matter? It's about having a satisfying car. If I needed an economobile, I'd either get a Rabbit or a 3, and if I needed a sporty economobile, I'd look at the GTI, Mazdaspeed3 and Si. But there's no Corolla many people lust after.

Why is the corolla has always been so ugly? Look at the Civic how attractive it has always been. Toyota we know you can do it, so DO IT!

i'm absolutely, positively SURE toyota IS SMART enough that lexus will never have a "cheap" model in the lineup.
that does not mean however, that regular toyotas could not OFFER lexus pioneered options! "trickle down" has always occured, as volume goes up and prices come down on new innovations. few can do fast cost cutting and trickle downs, as toyota can.
it also does not mean, that toyotas can't be made to RESEMBLE lexuses. i have a 9th generation corolla, and it COULD pass for a mini-lexus. especially in profile. the taillight cluster would be at home on a lexus too. (the '03 additionally has an elegant grill more lexus-like than later models.)
this 10th generation model may look bland to some, but i think it again maintains a family resemblance to lexus sedans. take note of the C-pillar. NO other econobox resembles an upmarket car so much in profile. (all the "sporty styled" competitors just looks boy-racerish. toyota buyers are more ADULT.)

Please let Lexus be the only premium company without a cheap car in the line up. We don't need a four cylinder Lexus' selling for $25k.

Hey, hey, hey kart1!
I HAVE AN A3 2.0T FWD. IT'S FASTER THAN MY OLD A6 2.7T THAT I HAD BEFORE THE S4. IT'S AS NIMBLE AS A BMW 3 SERIES, AS GOOD LOOKING AS AN A8 AND AS VERSATILE AS AN A4 AVANT. AND IT GETS 27MPG TO BOOT.
Is that good enough for you? It also has the best transmission in the world, DSG.

Let's face it.
It's a terrible looking car with no redeeming attributes and the wise motorist would almost certainly be better off with a better looking, more exciting alternative.
The fact this car may have 2 less problems than one of its rivals is trivial.
Fact is, and no one can deny it, is that all the other manufacturers are offering Toyota levels of reliability with better styling, better dynamics and with that little something that makes you want to go out and stare at it on the drive way.
This new Corolla brings nothing particularly new or special to the market, and is simply a bland and uninspiring car that is out-classed by its Japanese and European rivals.

Who offers Toyota levels of Reliability???
Honda gets close - but it still isn't there.
But, but, but Hyundai will in like like 5 years ;).

kart1, again-
"Honda gets close - but it still isn't there."
Toyota's reliability has been steadily declining as the corporation has super-sized over the last few years.
Honda's excellent reliability has been constant, and it's almost always made a superior car to Toyota. I don't see one reason to buy a Toyota over a Honda. I always root for Honda- they're the Japanese equivalent of VW. Fun to drive, loads of character, good gas mileage and they run forever (that last part isn't a normal VW trait, but some have very good reliability).

The Rabbit and Passat are the most upscale, fun-to-drive cars in class. They command a higher price for obvious reasons.
What doesn't make sense to me is that the Rabbit is $14K and the Jetta is $16K. Why charge more for the sedan? The hatch is larger, and $2K is a significant difference in this price class.
But really, tell me, would you rather have a loaded Rabbit or a loaded Corolla? I think that's an easy choice. VWs are infinitely more stylish, more satisfying to own, and of course, the fabled German engineering. To compare the GTI to a Corolla is like comparing a Porsche to... a Lexus.

'Economy car'?
Is that what you American's call them? No wonder your expectations are so low.
In other parts of the world, such cars are the most publicised, and are the most important cars in a manufacturer's line up.
Which is why the rest of the world knows Toyota as that Japanese brand with the boring cars. Renault, Peugeot and Citroen offer funky, attractive B-segment cars for those who like innovative design and fun handling.
then we have the extremely competent and well-built Golf, and the modern and well-engineered Ford Focus and Opel Astra.
With such a colorful and desirable range of models to choose from, the lacklustre and mediocre Corolla is seen as the old peoples choice, or for people who don't care about cars.
Will, why do you spend half your life on Autospies defending a car brand which makes cars for people who don't like cars? I find that rather sad.
Interesting people would sing the praises of the funky and innovative Citroen C4 or even the sporty Mazda3, but never the boring Corolla.
And trust me, if you owned a Citroen C4, Renault Megane 230 F1 or Ford Focus ST, you would admire them on your drive-way.
Because they are infinitely more visually stimulating than the mediocre styling you American's pass of as good-looking.

The Civic, 3 or Rabbit are just simply better cars than the Corolla, Will.
The Civic has always been the golden standard, and the last-gen Corolla was an embarrassment. The new Rabbit and 3 pose formidable opposition, but the new Corolla again seems lackluster.

The Versa only sits on a Renault platform, so is not 're-badged'.
But I agree, it isn't attractive.

If Toyota was going for mediocre, they hit the nail right on the head. Just about every other car in its class looks better. Toyota interior quality is becoming average as the other makers catch up. Toyota is losing the qualities that got it here, or should I say the other manufacturers have closed the gap. Either way, I find it hard to believe the launch was actually delayed for last minute styling changes. The original redesign must have been just awful. Another step backward for Toyota style.

VW has always had better interiors than Toyota.
"Quality" is a debatable word. Toyota interiors were never particularly well-done, they were just well built. VW adds a dosage of style and substance that Toyota can't touch. My wife's old RX300's rear door panel was basically falling off when we traded it in, back in 2003. I had no such interior (or any) trouble with my '00 A6, or my new Audi.

Sure the Rabbit/Jetta, Mazda3, and Euro Focus is better than the Corolla. But look at their price tag. I don't know how much the new Corolla will be, but a nicely equipped S and LE version of the current Corolla runs in the low 17k range. Even the new Versa is closer to 19k when it's nicely equipped. If Toyota wanted the Corolla to cost 23k it would be better than the Jetta/Rabbit. But why go through all the trouble? Just buy a Camry. For 23k you can get an LE V6 Camry is quicker than all the cars in the Corolla's class.

the reason it sells so well is it's WELL BUILT, reliable, and indeed long lasting.
EIGHT YEAR OLD corollas remain more reliable than 3 year old VWs. and audis. and even MBs!
if toyota put higher grade materials into the interior, they COULD sell it as a lexus. they don't because they learned from from acura's experience with the Integra and infiniti's experience with the G20.
and UNLIKE the german competition, they want to keep the lexus nameplate more exclusive, by NOT offering a 4-cyl lexus. (the euro market IS220d excepted.)
