Toyota announced new FCHV-adv fuel-cell hybrid that gets 516 miles
Toyota today announced that it has developed a new fuel-cell hybrid system, which is powered by hydrogen and electricity, that allows its FCHV-adv model to travel a range of 516 miles. That’s more than twice the distance than its predecessor model that had a range of 205 miles.

The Toyota FCHV-adv model has already received government approval and will be available for leasing in Japan later in 2008. Toyota spokesman said that pricing and other details for overseas plans were...

Why is range so important and not taking about efficiency?
Put a bigger tank of hydrogen and you have longer range.
I believe FCX from Honda is still superior. Toyota is trailing behind by 1-2 years.

I think range is important when I travel long distances by car. I want manufacturers to install larger fuel tanks on cars in spite of the extra weight of fuel that may invite. I simply do not want to get stuck looking for premium fuel in an area where everyone uses regular fuel. I was even thinking about getting a Mercedes GLK diesel just to get the long range but my lease ran out and I could not wait another 6 months to a year for that diesel to appear on the market. I ended up buying a Passat 2.0T which has a fairly large gas tank and uses 1/3 less fuel than the leased A6 Quattro that I turned in.

well the optimum car would have efficiency and long range. but doesnt efficiency equal long range? if it had low efficiency, then no matter how big a tank you fit on the car, its not going to get a high range.

so basically, the statements above do not make sense. notice there is no mention of how efficient this new model is, but by longer range, im sure they didnt just stick a bigger tank in there

true enuff. i usta have a ford focus, and now have a toyota corolla. both have the same size tanks-- 13.2 gallons.

the focus had a range of ~300 miles before i had to start thinking about refueling. with the corolla, i easily get to 400 miles.

(one convenience of both, is that the 'low fuel' light comes on when almost exactly 10 gallons has been burned off. allows for immediate calculation of mpg to that point.)

w/ regard to bigger tanks-- even if not needed, nothing wrong with that. one always has the OPTION of putting in a set no. of gallons rather than topping off.

What about everything else that matters... safety, performance, styling... basically everything conveniently omitted in this article.

EVERYTHING engineers design consists of measured compromises.

BICYCLES are the ultimate green machines; do you expect maximum safety and performance from them? if you want to be totally safe, drive an Abrams tank! but don't complain about the mileage.
