Toyota dealers still using old fuel-mileage ratings
When 2008 model year cars were required to post fuel-mileage based on new government testing earlier this month, economy ratings dropped across the board. However, hybrids suffered the most under the new "real-world" testing — most hybrids saw a 20% decrease in fuel mileage.

Before the new regulations, the most popular hybrid in America — the Toyota Prius — advertised fuel economy of 60 mpg city and 51 highway. After the 2008 rating system, mileage dropped to 48/45 mpg city/highway — much closer to real-world results. But many Toyota dealers are still using the pre-2008 mileage figures.

I wouldn't be surprise if corporate toyota was aware of this or spear heading these advertising campaigns.

I am pretty sure it is now 45/48 (city/highway) not 48/45.
This is more realistic from what I have been getting after 20K miles. I average 45.5mpg since new with 50/50% city/highway driving.
Yes, <city> is indeed lower than <highway> unless you could find a stretch of road where you could maintain 40mph w/o stop lights. Than you will get 60-70mpg for a few miles.

The EPA is still showing higher city than highway mpg, 48/45. My own experiences in LA city/freeway traffic also netted better hwy mileage, usually around 45/50 (city/hwy). But in a different urban setting (now in SFO) I am getting better city mpg. It just depends on so many variables.

CNW is a hack tool for the domestic auto industry. hasnt anyone figured this out yet. Look at their websute. CNW has it out for Toyota and hybrids, and this is their latest nonsense claim.

2008 Priuses just came out, what, last week? When was this survey done? Dealers, ads and window stickers of 2007 Priuses naturally advertised the 2007 figures, in accordance with the law.

I've almost given up posting on this site, but crap like this will pull me out of the woodwork.

And as for the three posters above me, kpaxx, opfreak and montyz81, check your spelling and grammar. You are in such a hurry to jump on the anti-hybrid, anti-Toyota bandwagon, you are coming across as immature school children. You're putting about as much thought into your replies as CNW puts into its "research."

This article should be getting more attention. Put "Lexus IS-F" in it somewhere.

uh duh....because they're advertising 2007 cars, not 2008 ones yet...using the 2007 stickers that are on the car with EPA supplied MPG numbers...call me when they still claim 60mpg on the 2008's....until then, get a life!
