Toyota presents the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) curtain shield airbag
Toyota, one of the biggest car manufacturer, announced today the development of the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) rear window curtain shield airbag, a new safety method that protects the heads of the rear passengers in case of a rear-end collision.

So how does this work? When needed, the new system deploys from roof lining above the rear window like a curtain barrier, and together with the headrests it minimizes the impact to the head helping to reduce the injuries. The new system will debut on the new Toyota iQ, an ultra-compact four-seater that will be launched soon!

This is just bloody unnecessary. Why would you need one if you are wearing a seatbelt or have a head rest behind you head? Just more weight to Toyota's already slow cars

Have you seen the vehicle they're putting this in?!? Any safety help they can put in it is welcome!

Not needed?!?! The Toyota IQ is the same size as a Smart vehicle and one of the major concerns are the crash concerns. Anything to help with crashes and lower concerns would definitely be welcome. This isn't like a giant heavy battery pack...it's an airbag. If I were in a crash in the backseat, I dont' think I would mind having an airbag system protecting me.

Im with u. I just lost a friend in an accident, in August, in a Mazda3. His car had side airbags but the car folded like a layout couch. He also had his seatbelt on. This is just something 2 ease the minds of the folks who buy these cars. (Wow, Im upset talking right now but Im just saying) Seatbelts nor airbags can really save ur life in an ***UNEXPECTED*** crash. They are really just there to add peace of mind...

LACMAN, Get over yourself dude. It's sad that your friend had to go that way, but aren't all car crashes ***UNEXPECTED***? I mean, I don't know anybody that survived a car accident who knew they were going to be in one. I suppose flying through a windshield only to be stopped by a truck, bumper, pole, etc in front of you is a lot better than simply wearing your seat belt? I'm sorry about your friend but these things happen everyday it's just that in your case, the end result was unfortunate.

I dont care 2 read the article but if its called SRS, the name came from Chrysler... I remember being in their minivans when they first came out and it had SRS stamped on the dash. If they are bragging on this from the actual technology, what the hell is a "bag" (i dont care what its made out of) going 2 do 2 stop a car traveling 40MPH from effin' up the passengers??? Nice Toyota, I dont buy it but someone will.

Every car these days are equipped with SRS which is also known as an "Air Bag" you douche bag. This is not your ordinary SRS which deploys from the front nor the sides. The SRS the article is talking about is the rear window curtain shield airbag.

I think the focus of this article isn't on whether or not the Toyota iQ needs it. It's on the technology itself. I'm not sure how effective a rear airbag will be effective in a rear-end collision without seeing any data, but to be honest, I'd welcome the addition. To date, there have been many innovations to help protect occupants in front, side, and rollover impacts. However, there has always been less focus on rear-end collisions. Yes, some cars come with active head restraints, but a lot of cars also don't emphasize the structure of the rear of the car. Many cars also have poorly designed seat cushions to help reduce whiplash injuries. An extra airbag is still an extra layer protecting against anything intruding into the rear cabin (this is especially the case with hatchbacks). Would you rather be hit in the back of your head by the bumper of a semi, or would you rather be hit by an airbag shielding against the bumper of the semi, right? In my opinion, every little bit counts.
