Toyota recalling floor mats in the 2007 Lexus ES, Camry
Toyota is recalling a total of 55,000 floor mats due to complaints that the mats get caught to the accelerator pedal and cause unintentional acceleration.

The folks at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took it a step further and asked drivers of other Toyota vehicles, including the Prius, to check their floor mats as well...

Interestingly enough, nearly every luxury-car company that uses the floor-hinged accelerator pedal (as opposed to the Americanized "floating" pedal) are having or are GOING to have this same problem simply because too many dealers are not using the tethers to hold the floormats securely in place. Even in my e90 sedan and my wife's 07 530 I've noticed this floormat issue, so I re-mounted and adjusted the tethers- problem solved.

My ex's 330i had little tabs that secured the floor mat to the floor. You had to use a flat object to twist it and it locked in place. Never had a single problem with it getting in the way of the gas pedal.

My CLK also has this on the drivers side only (makes perfect sense) All u do is press down on the two plastic inserts firmly until you hear it click and that puppy is going nowhere.

I saw this on CNN last night. Apparently it seems Toyota failed to properly engineer a simple floormat for its Camry/ES350

At least it's not as bad as Mercedes 2006 recalls for airbags on the C class, or 2005 recalls for brake issues.

I've never seen nit-pickers who pick as many nits as you guys.

Grow up!

That's impossible! Toyota/Lexus are perfect and incapable of designing anything that’s defective. I didn’t read the article but I can guarantee that Toyota probably used a supplier for the mats and didn’t design and build the mats themselves. Why do people try to knock the builder of the best cars in the world? Jealousy I guess.

Complete lack of attention to the basics. They should spend more time testing their cars and less time marketing them.

If Toyota/Lexus were truly perfect, than what the hell would losers such as you guys have to post about?

You seemingly contribute no reall value to these discussions, and only thrive on crapping on Lexus.

kpaxx...

lack of attention? well it applies to all automakers...if you look at every auto maker, you'll find issues/concerns. though its a problem (minor/major), the real test is how quickly/adequately you repsond and fix that problem.

when you can be responsive and address the issues, you maintain customer satisfaction.

no one expects a vehicle to be perfect...in the end its a machine, and machines tend to have issues of their own. no matter what the brand and quality.

r15mohd..

I agree completely. But this issue is a very basic thing to overlook. Car mats from the 60s had backing on them to prevent them from getting underneath the pedal and it worked. The should at least ensure whatever system they use works.

If you actually read the damn statement from the NHTSA, you will see the floormats are not designed wrong. They do have fasteners.

This is just a precaution to make sure people are using them and to caution about installing floormats on top of the factory ones.

Reading. It really does kick ass sometimes!

very true it is basic, and i havent checked out the camry or ES lately...but as far as i know/knew Lexus/Toyota have used plastic hook-like peices that hooked to a spot on the front floor mats which was bolted down to the actual framing of the floor.

my 2000 ES has it, so does my 99 celica, even my 2006 GS. so i am unfamiliar with the situation, but again it is a major problem due to the accidental injuries that can occur.

Maybe it is the design of the floor mat or accelerator pedal or the fastener(s). The car I drive has guard between the accelerator pedal and the floor so nothing can get underneath or in the way of the accelerator pedal.

There is nothing wrong with the floormats, they recalled them to place a warning sticker for idiot customers who put allseason floor mats over the carpet ones. The mats were not changed at all, most of you have no clue what you are talking about. It is not a quality issue,!

Well the car I drive has a guard between the accelerator pedal and the floor so nothing can interfere. You could use four floor mats if you want and nothing would interfere. I guess toyota/lexus is either to cheap to install something like this or they just don't have safety as a priority.

Remember the Audi's with that "unintentional acceleration" problem? That was due to a real engineering screw up with the throttle position itself. Too bad Audi's still fighting that stigma.

That was not Audi's fault, no... just like this (!!!), it was the stupid American owners' problems. Of course, none of the European Audi 5000 owners had this problem.

KingerKinger - 9/28/2007 5:02:34 AM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
That was due to the fact that American owners were not used to a European car with pedals closers together. There's plenty of stuff out there on the net explaining how Audi got shafted, including info on the staged 60 minutes video.

THE AUDI ACCELERATION ISSUE WAS NOT THE AUDI ACCELERATION ISSUE.

Geez, get a background check before you post!

It had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE AUDI 5000. It was because American drivers weren't used to the traditional European placement of the pedals, and they pressed the gas instead of the brake sometimes!

This shows how dedicated Toyota is in putting out good products when other car companies such as BMW, Ford, Chrysler & Dodge are recalling hundreds of thousands of their cars for very major and serious defects, they are recalling for floor mats.

This recall is almost as lethal as Honda's printing the wrong phone number in the owner's manual.

What we need are more German engine fires and brakes that don't work.

Here's a good example of fine German engineering.

Wow, they got engines that cut out, steering that doesn't work and brake failures all in one recall. All hail German efficiency.

BMW recalls recent V8s, V12s

by posted July 20, 2004

FRANKFURT, Germany -- German luxury carmaker BMW AG said Thursday it is recalling 4,000 sedans and sports utility vehicles worldwide due to defective control units in V8 and V12 gasoline engines.

******************
The company says owners should not drive the vehicles, and should call their dealer for more information.
******************

BMW said on its Web site that new cars registered between May 13 and July 6 are affected. "Due to a temporary production fault of a supplier, deficient parts were supplied and installed in new 5-, 6- and 7-Series and X5 models with V8 or V12 cylinder petrol engines," BMW said in a statement.

************************
The engines of these vehicles may cut off unexpectedly, which could lead to failure of the power steering. The brakes could also fail, potentially causing an accident BMW said. The company is notifying owners by mail.

That was a fault of one of their supliers, BMW did the resposible thing and replaced the part. Just because we're German car fans doesn't mean we're out to get Toyota, that make good cars. Most of us realise though that every manufacturer makes mistakes from time to time, do you think posting these articles will make me think less of BMW and more of Toyota? Pffft...

No, not at all, I'm just making the point that all manufacturers have recalls, especially nowadays as the market place is so competitive and companies are under strict time-deadlines to get vehicles ready and out to market.

225 units, that's about 1 months worth of sales. Of course, since it's not Toyota, we'll let it slide.

Speaking of cheap parts, looks like BMW suffers from the same ailments as Toyota. Atleast Toyota can tighten nuts properly on their steering. Odd that the company that claims to be masters of handling have the most recalls with either loss of steering or impaired handling.

Never realized that BMW motorcycles had so many recalls. Now we know being sub-par is just part of their corporate culture.

The 5 series has benn out 4 years now and has had 7 recalls, I don't know what way you're adding but thats not 3 a year, try and make it along to maths class tomorrow ;) All companies have recalls, thats the point I was making by posting the link to Toyota recalls, and the Toyota recalls are just as serious if not more serious. The Prius has had just as many recalls as the 5-series and the Tundra and Tacoma have had even more.
