Toyota recalls 90,000 Highlanders over seat belts
DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp is recalling 90,000 model year 2008 Highlander and Highlander hybrid sport utility vehicles due to potential problems with securing child safety seats in third row seats.
The locking mechanism on the seat belts apparently cannot secure properly when certain rear-facing child safety seats are used, which could cause the child seats to move, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported on Friday.
"As such, this could discourage the use of a child restraint and in the event of a crash, the child may not be adequately protected, possibly resulting in injury," the NHTSA said in a statement on its Web site, http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov.
The problem was discovered by NHTSA during compliance testing on one type of two-piece rear-facing child safety seat and has not resulted in any accidents or injuries, Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong said.
The seat belt failed to lock properly during testing, which could result in shifting during normal driving, but the belt would still lock securely during an accident, Kwong said.

You have to admire Toyotas devotion to safety. It is good that they're recalling these cars and fixing them for free. If this were BMW for example the consumers would be somehow charged for the faulty product.

If this had been one of the big 3 would you have given them the same benefit of the doubt?

Some cue El-tardo. Blah blah blah...to deceive.
A recall is a recall, but I wonder what sort of parent puts their childseat in the 3rd row?
Not only is it hard to get to in an emergency, but it removes the extra cushion a 2nd row seat gets in a rear-end fender bender.

that was my 1st thot too. MOST kids still in child seats get put in 2d row. and this was with ONLY ONE brand/type of childseat. which is still restrained, just has some wiggle room.
sounds like an EXTREME NITPICKY issue. yet toyota is fixing it anyway.
MOST other car companies would either dismiss it, or implement the cheap "lawyers' fix." namely, a sticker warning to slap on, with a disclaimer of liability if the warning is ignored.

did Toyota finally call it a recall, or some other fancy term?

well...thats what you get for trying to be # 1 when you should just focus on the quality of your products since it is the only thing that Toyota supposedly has over other manufactures.
