Toyota's FT-86 Concept May Be The Next Celica

Toyota's new rear-wheel-drive sports coupe could be called the Celica, autocar.

co.uk has learned.

The concept version of the car, which is being co-developed by Toyota and Subaru and is due to go on sale in 2012, was unveiled at this week's Tokyo motor show.

The concept, badged FT-86 in homage to the Toyota Corolla AE-86 GT, is being developed to increase the company's credibility among young Japanese buyers.

No scratch this idea. Us car fans want to see a new Supra not another Celica!. I don't care what you think about the AE86. The new Supra will sell!

Don't think that they are gonna call it the celica. Because they keep dropping hits thats it a new AE86.

And the AE86 has a much bigger folowing than the celica.

Some how I seriously doubt that they'll call it the Corolla.

Or were you not aware that in America the AE86 was known as the Corolla Sport/GT-S, and in Japan it was the Corolla Levin/Trueno (for the Sprinter version).

If Toyota has any aspirations of marketing this as a performance car, then they need to stay as far away from the name Corolla as possible, because for most people today the name Corolla is as far from sporty as it can be.

what is it about Euro cars (other than Italian) and BORING designs?

even (some) american designs, to say nothing of japanese, are FAR more innovative and advanced.

No matter what they call it....it will be the best RWD 4 cylinder car produce in a while. Maybe they can also bring back the Nissan Silvia to compete...who knows

What are the other rwd 4 cylinder cars that are currently on the market? Hmm.... ariel atom, caterham super seven, lotus elise, Honda S2000? Is it truly the best? Hmmm... maybe the best in its price range :P

Joe it isn't even best in its expected price range. The Saturn Sky Redline and Pontiac Solstice GXP were two HOT cars. Other notables would include the WRX (I know AWD not RWD but it is performance oriented and offers great handling).

Also remember just because it is RWD doesn't mean it will have the best performance in its segment. This thing will be going up against the Mazdaspeed3, Cruze SS, and likely a Focus RS. That will be a tough group to battle with.

I think it's great looking...and I'm surprised by that.
Not sure how big this market really is anymore - it died years ago - but it could sell if priced right. Definitely needed in the lineup.

First time Toyota made a car that excited me in a long time. Turbo 6 cyl could make it a Supra but then that'll be dreaming.

I don't see a problem with Celica if they keep it under $25k. It appeals to a younger generation that might not remember the chickmobile the old celica was lol.

With the right price point I see a hit.

They are going to finally produce what the Celica SHOULD have been from the start. Now only if they could bring back the Supra with a Turbo 6...THAT would be a sight to see...

the original Celica WAS a rwd car. as were many corollas until the mass migration to fwd.

The Supra will only return when they replace the ugly ass SC430 since that's basically the Supra minus the performance.

Hi output Subaru engine, good weight distribution and low centre of gravity. It'll have the goods.

Probably come in GT, GT-S and GT-F trims for Toyota and only WRX for Subi.

Anything more than $17-$20K will price it out of its intended marketshare. I still think RWD on this car was not a bright decision by Toyota, but hey if thats what they want to do then fine.

I just feel bad for that poor soul in Toledo, Ohio or some other Northern area who buys one of these things and crashes it into a snowbank becuase the RWD wont grip the snow right.

Its his life, but hey if he wants to gamble with it then oh ok.

There was a reason why most companies got rid of RWD 20 years ago, too bad so many people are finding out the hard way with their $25,000+ cars crushed and caked in 5 inches of ice all over on the side of the road all over the Northern states every winter the last few years.

I almost got hit twice last winter by RWDs losing control.

If the roads are plowed, you can drive pretty much any RWD car. Even if they're not plowed, and you have a good set of tires, it's not that bad. I drove up and down hills with inches of snow, in a Mustang, with no issues.

I personally think RWD car drivers are pretty safe in the winter because they know their cars have the potential to lose control. The ones I'm most worried about are the AWD and FWD snobs that think snow can't affect them.

You know this year will be the test. The Farmer's Almanac Predicted a colder and snowier winter than last year. From the Canadian Border, all the way down. Even the Gulf coast will get snow this year.

Think about it, piss poor plowing due to mass layoffs of city, state, township, and county workers all over. Just be careful this winter guys. Buy those tires, get chains, do whatever you have to do to be ready and safe.
