Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell car coming in 2014

Recent automotive headline grabbers include the FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle from Honda, the combustion-powered Hydrogen 7 and Hybrid X6 from BMW,the rotary RE line of cars as well as the RX-8 from Mazda.

Meanwhile, the Japanese giant automaker Toyota is also working on its own hydrogen fuel cell car which could hit the streets as early as 2014.

Toyota is so far behind everyone. Who cares anyway? They have no style and are only appliances. The real cars of the future are all German! Everyone knows that. They are not credible because they have no racing heritage.

Chevy and BMW have had hydrogen powered cars being tested on the roads for awhile now. Big deal, toyota is finally joining. I like how TRYME just takes the articles off from http://www.4wheelsnews.com/ and puts them on here like their a new news.

Toyota has been testing hydrogen powered Highlanders at CA universities for years. They just havent leased them (or given them away) as Honda and BMW have. But those programs are just test beds of a different sort. Everyone is on this "bandwagon"....well except the feds now thankfully.

Joe,
How many States are in the U.S.? Last time I checked 50. That leaves 35 hydrogen incapable states that hybrids can still serve. Hybrid tech has also developed technologies that work in tandem with fuel cell.

Toyota's had other fuel cell vehicles (2006 Highlander the latest one I can recall but yes, they've been developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles since 1992).

Other companies would do something stupid like make a gasoline/hydrogen car and claim its a hydrogen vehicle simply because it can (but won't hence the gas tank being twice as big as the hydrogen tank) burn hydrogen. Real fuel cells also get better than 8mpg mileage of the ultimate_hydrogen_machine.

Real fuel cells are only a max of about 60% efficient, unless you run them at 800 Celcius, which then takes a tremendous amount of energy in both super cooling it to liquid form, keeping it cool while its stored, and then super heating it to gain 90% efficiency. All the while draining the power grid of energy to keep your car going. Just because the emissions don't come out of your tail pipe doesn't mean your car is green. I personally think electric cars will win in the long run since they are invariably more efficient due to fewer energy transfers
(i.e. chemical>mechanical>electrical>mechanical vs chemical>mechanical>electrical>chemical>electrical>mechanical) each time you convert you lose energy and having that many conversions from the raw fuel is horrible!
