Toyota to UAW: "Fire Em All" Toyota Considers Dumping Plant
According to the now-infamous Georgetown, Kentucky memo, ToMoCo’s brass are concerned that their workers’ wages are growing faster than the company's profits. To rectify this situation, Toyota’s newest plants will pay workers based on local manufacturing wages– not United Auto Workers (UAW) scale. Naturally, the UAW is using this as flamebait to organize Toyota’s stateside operations, starting with Georgetown. Toyota’s launched its next salvo in this ongoing war of wages: they’re contemplating pulling Tacoma production from NUMMI.

GM and Toyota formed NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.) in 1984. The Fremont, California facility was Toyota’s first foray into American manufacturing and GM’s chance to learn about Toyota’s take on lean manufacturing. The 380-acre NUMMI facility currently cranks-out approximately 250k cars (Toyota Corolla, Pontiac Vibe) and 170k trucks (Toyota Tacoma) per year.

Its like GM and Ford all over again. I would hate to be one of those affected people.

Yes there are people affected in this scenario who might lose their jobs, etc. but I'd like to say that they are making a little too much. $32 plus benefits for high school education is really good, too good. I mean people complain that Toyota is making profits and still cutting costs, well that is the reason Toyota makes profits otherwise they'd end up like GM and Ford.

I agree most are trying to live an impossible dream. White collar wages for blue collar work.

But this is Toyota's first real bump in the road, and I find it hard to believe they would consider packing their bags.

So much about loyalty to the American worker.

Well it isn't as if they have exhausted all avenues. They basically have said you get paid too much and it is only going to get worse, so we may move to cut out the problem (read that as "you").

They also built here fully aware of the wages in the workforce and now they don't like it.

You can't just point a finger at Toyota for putting a plant in a region and then not sticking it out and doing nothing about a problem that wont seem to go away. What do you want them to do? Just sit there and let things get worse? Many Toyota naysayers like to bring GM and Ford comparisons to the table when talking about the brand's expansion in their own little dreams of their downfall, but what none of them realize is that Toyota is NOT GM or Ford, they fix problems when they see them...

Actually I think the target the south primarily due to better weather allowing more works days and these states will give huge tax breaks to locate there.

Since Toyota has already outsourced these jobs and don't want to pay anymore wages why don't they move production to Mexico and give those people the jobs?

"Fire Em All" is a little inflammatory, tho I expect nothing less here. It is quite possible that Toyota will someday close NUMMI or leave the partnership. I dont expect Toyota to keep plants that are not profitable open. As soon as that starts happening, they will be just like the domestics.

Businesses #1 priority is profitability.

What else needs to be said?

Toyota has one of the highest paid union work forces in the world at home.. except the japanese govt. helps pay for healthcare and retirement.

Here, your on your own and toyota isn't nearly as caring of the american worker as Ford, GM and Chrysler.

GO UAW, expose toyota for what it is - a dirty low down company. supplier relations? ha, try getting business pulled because they want to exploit the weak yen. lame bloated company, oversold, tries to hard, to many lemming dorks can't get enough.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the (REPREHENSIBLE) Toyota/Lexus people.....

Either the UAW or Toyota must die. Toyota has been riding on the coat tails of the big 3 for long enough. It's time to send them back to Japan.
