Toyota to recall more than 1.35 million cars worldwide

TOKYO (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it would recall more than 1.

35 million Vitz and two other models globally to fix a defect in the seatbelt, a component in the exhaust system or both.

Subject to the recall in Japan are 525,898 Vitz, Belta and Ractis cars built from January 2005 to April 2008, Toyota said in a filing with the transport ministry.

It will also recall a combined 830,000 units of the Vitz subcompact, called Yaris in many markets, and Belta exported to Europe, North America and other markets, a spokeswoman said.

One case of fire was reported in Japan due to the faulty seatbelt design, which could cause a noise-absorber device to melt when the seatbelt tensioner is activated in a collision, Toyota said.

No car is ever 100% perfect, but I see Toyota's reputation taking a big hit with so many recalls. This is the second recall this month alone, and about 2 million for the first quarter of 2009.

i love hearing this stuff about toyota. It just shows that toyota is no better than anyone else out there. If anything they are rushing things to much and our starting to cut quality. Maybe more people realize it is a waste of money to buy a toyota or even a honda.

abcd, all manufacturers will do this...trust me. If an OEM spots a potential problem, even if no one has found it (yet), they usually run out to fix it, before it becomes a problem. The toyotas in recall are relatively new, try 10 years or 200,000KM..... Toyota (as well as all OEMs) knows better than to let this stuff sit. Either way, recalls happen. Toyota has been getting a poorer reputation lately, but I think alot of that has to do with the fact that their main US rivals (GM/Ford/maybeDodge) have come up in quality so that there isn't this massive buffer between Ford & Toyota or GM & Honda, etc. That and Toyota has grown so much in the past 10 years that there are going to be problems when you are that big. Being the biggest kid on the block ain't always easy.

Toyota and recalls are nothing new. Every manufacturer has them. Toyota's recalls have always been on the front-end, most of the time they are preventive recalls where they recognize a problem and try to fix it before it balloons out of control among their customers. And for all the people mocking a Toyota fan, you are annoying, and are not helping any situation at all.

not helping the situation? WHo cares what they say, business is business and dollars are dollars. Talk is cheap (usually its free). If this were GM or Ford or Chrysler then talk would be harmful, but in the end, its Toyota. Americans dont care, they will buy toyota no matter what. Unless Toyota has a problem where their engine spotaneously explode at a rate of 25% of new cars, then no one will care.

Thank you :) And yeah Lebanon is very beautiful in its landscape and people.. and the women.. best in the area lol. But they have a thing in Lebanon about looking wealthy, even if you're not.. Most of them are average, but because of the way they dress, you would never guess ;)
If it wasn't for the civil wars and wars with Israel, it could have been 10 times better.

How does a fire start from a seatbelt recall?
Emissions is stupid.

Not life threatening (unless you got barbecued in your seatbelt) but can't really defend this recall, it was just a half-assed effort on Toyota's part. Hopefully this will stop Toyota from finding the absolute cheapest child produced parts available (just like everyone else).

you are only HALF right, huu. yes, every mfgr looks for the CHEAPEST supplier. but at both toyota and honda, that is NOT THE ONLY criterion by which they choose suppliers. price aside, they have minimum quality standards. |||

which show in LONG TERM durability. most makers' vehicles reach a rate of 100 problems per 100 vehicles at about 5 years. fords last for 7 years. hondas are good for slightly over 10 years. meaning there is a chance that quite a few 9-yr old hondas have had NO PROBLEMS
AT ALL. (and a few mite've had more than one; these are overall averages.) |||

toyotas only get to the 100 problems/100 vehicles after SEVENTEEN YEARS! compare that with the 'assemblage of cheapest parts' that everyone other than honda and toyota throws together!

It's a numbers game folks. The more cars you produce and sell, the larger your recalls will be. But truth be told, Toyota is still number 1 or 2 in reliability. That's something the big 3 could never touch. Ford's coming around.

Yep! On this site there are only two kinds of people...haters,like Turbospyder and the passionate like David999. After all just keep your eyes on the guys who release the negative news to help promote their hate hoping the masses will follow. If you really want to bring down a company like Toyota you'd have to advertise like they do on TV and reverse 60 years of Toyota loyalist influence. Of course you would also have to have had millions to billions in reserved cash, which Toyota still has, regardless of what the negative folks out there are telling you.
