Within five weeks, United Auto Group has received over 12,600 $99 deposits for the Smart ForTwo, which hits US dealerships in 2008. UAG, the world’s second largest auto retailer and the owner of the Smart division of DaimlerChrysle,r said that it started taking a $99 refundable deposits back in March.

“With fuel prices escalating and this car promising 40 miles per gallon, they’re looking at it as an economical way to be able to adapt to changes in the marketplace,” Pordon said in a telephone interview with Dow Jones.

The Smart ForTwo has a three cylinder engine which has a capacity of one litre and delivers 61 bhp, 71 bhp or 84 bhp.
