UK to Raise Driving Age to 18 to Minimize Casualties
Learner drivers are to be banned from taking their test until they’re 18, under new government proposals.

The plan is to allow young people to start learning at 17, but not allow them to take their test until they turn 18.

In addition to these new plans, new drivers would also adhere to a zero booze limit, preventing any “I’ll just have the one” antics.

Maybe not a bad thing.. but raising the age limit doesnt compensate for the lack of proper tuition needed that isn't tested in our UK driving test.

All things considered, I think all this will really do is raise the fatality rate for the 18-20 age range. Granted maturity is a factor, but more so I believe it's the experience that comes with driving that is more a factor. Bumping the age up, just puts more novices in a different category. Perhaps a program requiring more driving time or learning before getting your license should be implemented.

Well you have to pass a theory test, a Hazard awareness test and then the driving test itself before you get your full license and can drive on your own, prior to that with a provisional license you need to display L plates and have somebody over the age of 21 in the car.

The UK testing though lacks a few things, car control is the big one. Driving at night or adverse weather conditions, motorway driving, parking properly, mechanical knowledge.

The UK test isn't easy to pass, but it isnt testing the right things.

The only real safety zone is the fact that when you pass your test insurance is obscene on anything other than an econobox... My first BM was £3500 per year to insure when I was 22, it has since come down to about £500 (I'm 28 now) --- this stops alot of kids getting anything they wouldn't be able to control...

... except for the spoilt rich kids - who's parents go and by them a Mercedes then wonder why their kid is in hospital after being dragged out of a smoking wreck on the motorway!

I'm 17, and my Vw Lupo (tiny as it is) costs 1000 quid a year, even though I'm on my Dad's policy. In my own name, it would be a 2000 a year.

TPFT or Fully Comp? My first car was a 106, I bought it on finance and had to fully comp it so that was about a grand a year .. 0-60 in 14secs top end of 96mph.. it was ridiculous... but thats UK car insurance for you, GUILTY until proven INNOCENT. I've never had a smash or needed to claim, but yet I've had up to 9pts on my license at any one time.

i'm 16, and im going to be 17 in a few months, and i live in the uk. the new proposals have really got me angry, because i'm passionate about cars.. if the uk government wants to crack down on the deaths of young people when driving, they should change the way the test is, make it more difficult so only the drivers with enough skill can pass it. changing the age from 17 to 18 will do nothing, because even though you're one year older, you're still very likely to still be a complete prat behind the wheel. i really hope these laws come into force after i take my test, which should be in early December.... oh yes, and just as a random side note congestion charging is rubbish.

Congestion charging is rubbish, are you in London?
I hate having to pay every time I want to see my friends in Kensington or even just go shopping in the west end.

Or as my friend has told me, do i have to book my test before 2009 even if i dont pass?
Replies will be much obliged.
