US Starts Summer Driving Season With Gasoline Surplus
US gasoline supplies should start the summer driving season at their highest level since 1999, helping to temper a surge in pump prices linked to the soaring cost of crude oil.

The outlook for high inventories comes amid shrinking American demand for the motor fuel and robust imports from Europe -- factors that will keep stockpiles plump despite low production from domestic refiners, analysts said.

"We'll continue to have above-average gasoline inventories heading into summer and, if it weren't for the high cost of crude, the price prospects for gasoline would be weaker than they've been for years," said Tim Evans, energy analyst at Citigroup Futures Research in New York.

Let me depress you guys further with the fact that when I bought a new Renault Dauphine in Montreal back in the early 1960's, gas was 35 cents per Imperial gallon. i was able to drive from Montreal to Ottawa and back for a dollar and change. A Mercedes 300Sl Gullwing sold for around C$12,500 at about the same time. The Renault cost me C$1,600. I also recall that a new small split level bungalow could also be bought for around C$12,500 and a Rolls Royce sedan was around C$14,000.

Inflation, Enn. Don't forget you would not have been earning anything like as much as you do now.

good point, rupert. salaries may have been 10% of current salaries, making gas translate to $3.50/gallon which is very close to current prices. also figure in how much more efficient cars are since the advent of fuel injection, and gas may be cheaper now than then.

i wonder when gas REALLY was cheapest (relatively).

I remember in the 90's when I think gas was $0.85 - $0.95. It was around the time I got my license during the Clinton administration

0to60, I hope you realize Clinton had nothing to do with those gas prices.

The demand for fuel seems to be decreasing as prices keep soaring and more people are curbing their driving habits and seeking fuel effiency. This is Good!

Now if they would only lower the prices to get rid of all the inventory. I highly doubt it though.

I just put in gas at $3.95 a gallon at 76, in Southern California...blaaah, and it was the cheaper of the stations.

Surplus? Better raise prices to lower demand to ensure we maintain that surplus...and it rained today.

Anyone else realize that it is relatively economical to drive a premium fueled vehicle nowdays? The cost used to be ~10% more per gallon, now the difference is less. In Iowa, premium is usually $.10 per gallon more expensive than regular. Ethanol, OTOH, is subsidized, so it is usually $.05 cheaper than regular.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Even though its subsidized, ethanol is still more expensive to produce, thus raising fuel prices.

Not sure what angle you are talking about in regards to being more expensive, but for the consumer, it is cheaper. I think you are talking about the cost to produce, perhaps?

For instance, a typical pricing scheme will be:
Regular 87 octane= $3.15/gal
Ethanol 89 octane= $3.10/gal (subsidized)
Premium 91+ octane= $3.20/gal

These are made up prices, as I am not sure what today's local fuel costs exactly. Gas stations will vary a cent or two between grades sometimes, i.e. not always a $.05 difference, sometimes $.06, other times $.04.

if you don't know what actual gas prices are, you don't actually drive a car.
as a matter of fact, all your posts show that.
it would be ok, but you try to pass yourself off as someone with at least some driving experience.
when are you going to get your driving license? 2 or 3 years is my guess.

A trillion barrels of oil is sitting in Canada.

The USA has 200 years worth of oil sitting in Alaska.

We're stuck here paying this outrageous gas tax.

For people it's just money out of their pockets.

By the time "we" get to use the Alaskan oil, the US will be no longer. Either way, it will only bring war to this land. (not to get political).

simmonsdp,
Ideally, I do like your plan. I was a lil' drunk when I said what I did. What I meant is, if we use all the worlds oil first, then are the only ones with oil left, other countries will want it badly. I deserved to get deboosted, whereas you deserve boost for your comment.

EL34,
Canada has 178 billion proven barrels, Alaska as about 26 billion.

With our combined consumption of 25 million barrels a day, N.America has enough internal reserves for 22 years if we didn't import anything.

It's better to use everyone else's first and cross our toes about the Bakken Shales (est. 270 to 500 billion barrels right dead centre in the heart of N.America). I can see the Chinese, Russians and Europeans just pissed off at that prospect :)

Don't really expect you to have a clue about any of this stuff though, you only know what the Europeans tell you.

Shredmo,
It may be the 21st century, but Admirals Atlantic and Pacific still protect North America, something else that I'm sure pisses the Chinese, Russians and Europeans off.
